Mirabel, Canada: Airbus Canada and Pratt & Whitney have declared that the technical issues that disrupted the Airbus A220 programme for several years are nearing resolution, with both companies expecting no A220 aircraft to remain grounded due to geared turbofan (GTF) engine problems by the end of 2026. The update was shared during a media briefing at Airbus Canada's A220 final assembly facility in Mirabel, Québec, where company executives outlined the programme's improving operational outlook. According to reporting by Leeham News & Analysis, only around 2% to 3% of grounded A220 aircraft are now out of service because of GTF engine-related issues, a sharp improvement from previous years when engine durability problems forced airlines to ground significant portions of their fleets. Guillaume Chevasson, Head of the A220 Programme and Chief Executive of Airbus Canada, said the programme had turned a corner after years of supply chain disruptions and engine-related operational challenges. "The AOG (Aircraft on Ground) crisis is over," Chevasson said during the briefing, adding that technical issues affecting the A220 fleet were now "close to zero." He noted that Airbus' collaboration with Pratt & Whitney had strengthened considerably, describing the relationship as being at a "very good level." According to Chevasson, the PW1500G geared turbofan engine is now performing as intended and has reached reliability levels approaching those of the Airbus A320 family. He added that the engine has matured sufficiently for intensive, high-cycle operations typical of regional and short-haul routes. A series of design improvements incorporated into the latest engine standard has significantly enhanced reliability, helping reduce operational disruptions for airlines. Chevasson also said the A220 programme's supply chain, which has been affected by global industrial disruptions in recent years, is showing clear signs of stabilisation. He highlighted the integration of Airbus' Belfast wing manufacturing facility formerly owned by Spirit AeroSystems as another milestone in strengthening programme stability. Bringing the facility under Airbus ownership has provided greater industrial control and improved production resilience, he said. Beyond the current programme recovery, Airbus is also advancing work on a stretched A220 variant, commonly referred to as the A220-500. While no formal launch decision has been taken, Chevasson confirmed that studies have been accelerated and Airbus is working closely with airline customers to develop what he described as a "simple" and "low-risk" aircraft that could be brought to market quickly. The latest update marks a significant milestone for the A220 programme, which has faced years of challenges linked to Pratt & Whitney GTF engine family. The PW1500G powering the A220, along with the PW1100G used on the A320neo family, has been affected by durability issues and inspections stemming from manufacturing defects in powdered metal components, leading to widespread aircraft groundings and maintenance backlogs across the aviation industry. Pratt & Whitney has been expanding maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capacity and implementing design improvements to accelerate engine repairs and reduce turnaround times. Airbus has also repeatedly stated that engine availability and supply chain constraints have been among the primary factors limiting A220 production in recent years. New Delhi, India: More than a year after the crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad claimed 260 lives, India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has informed the Supreme Court that the investigation is entering its final stages, with the draft final investigation report expected to be ready in October 2026 after the completion of technical analysis and mandatory international consultations. In a detailed affidavit filed jointly by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the AAIB, the Centre said the investigation activities are expected to be completed within approximately six weeks, subject to the resolution of a few remaining external dependencies. Once the analysis phase is concluded, investigators will prepare the draft final report before circulating it to participating States under international aviation rules. Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, 2025, striking a residential area near the airport. The accident killed 241 of the 242 people on board, along with 19 people on the ground, taking the total death toll to 260. It became one of India's deadliest aviation disasters in decades. Under ICAO Annex 13, accident investigations are intended solely to improve aviation safety and prevent future accidents, not to determine civil or criminal liability. In accordance with ICAO rules, when an investigation cannot be completed within 12 months, the investigating authority must issue an interim statement describing the progress made. Accordingly, the AAIB released an interim statement around the first anniversary of the accident rather than a final report. Earlier in the investigation, the AAIB's preliminary findings revealed that both engine fuel control switches moved from the RUN position to CUT OFF within seconds of takeoff, causing both engines to lose thrust. Cockpit voice recordings captured one pilot asking why the switches had been moved, while the other responded that he had not done so. The switches were subsequently returned to the RUN position, but the aircraft was unable to regain sufficient thrust before crashing. Those findings answered some questions while leaving investigators with significant unresolved issues regarding how the switches moved and whether any mechanical, human or other factors were involved. According to the latest affidavit, investigators are still completing analysis of the remaining technical evidence before reaching final conclusions. Once the draft report is prepared, it must be circulated to the participating States under ICAO Annex 13, including the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as the accredited representative for the State of Design and Manufacture of the Boeing 787. Those States are entitled to provide "significant and substantiated comments," a consultation process that the Centre said could take 30 to 60 days, depending on the complexity of the responses received. Only after those comments are considered can the AAIB finalize and publish its investigation report. The AAIB also defended maintaining strict confidentiality over sensitive investigative material, including cockpit voice recorder recordings and transcripts, witness statements, air traffic control communications, medical records and draft report contents. It said these protections are mandated by both Indian law and ICAO standards to preserve the integrity of safety investigations.

According to the New York State Police, the aircraft involved was a 1976 Piper Aerostar, a high-performance twin-engine airplane. Operational statistics released alongside the ranking showed that nearly 85% of Qantas' domestic departures left on schedule during June, while around 74% of international departures departed on time. Approximately 87% of international flights arrived within 30 minutes of their scheduled arrival times. The airline also recorded a relatively low 1.59% cancellation rate during the month. Despite topping the major airline category, Qantas ranked 23rd overall among the approximately 145 airlines included in OAG's broader June punctuality assessment, which also evaluates smaller regional carriers. Several smaller airlines recorded higher punctuality percentages but operated significantly fewer flights than the threshold required for inclusion in the major airline rankings. Qantas Domestic Chief Executive Officer Markus Svensson credited the result to the efforts of employees across the airline's operations. "This achievement reflects the dedication of our people across the business who work every day to deliver reliable services for our customers," Svensson said, adding that while the recognition is encouraging, the airline remains focused on further improving reliability and the overall customer experience. The airline's improved operational performance depends upon several initiatives implemented over the past year. These include the introduction of new Airbus A220-300 aircraft and the arrival of the Airbus A321XLR, both of which provide improved operational efficiency and reliability compared with older aircraft. Qantas has also streamlined boarding procedures, turnaround processes and operational planning while investing in network resilience to reduce delays. The latest OAG rankings place Qantas ahead of several major global competitors, reinforcing Australia's flag carrier's operational recovery at a time when airlines worldwide continue to face challenges including airspace restrictions, supply chain constraints and fleet availability issues. The June ranking also comes as Qantas continues to navigate broader industry pressures, including elevated fuel costs and geopolitical disruptions affecting global aviation. Nevertheless, the latest OAG data highlights a substantial improvement in the airline's operational performance and marks one of its strongest reliability results in recent years.

Shannon, Ireland: United Airlines Flight UA509, a Boeing 767-400ER operating from Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), Italy, to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), New Jersey, was forced to divert to Shannon Airport (SNN), Ireland, on July 11 after the flight crew reported right-engine vibrations and an unusual odor in the cabin while crossing the North Atlantic. The aircraft was carrying 227 passengers and crew, and all landed safely with no injuries. The aircraft, registered N76065, departed Rome at 1:36 p.m. local time for the scheduled transatlantic service to Newark. Approximately three hours into the flight, while cruising at FL340 (34,000 feet) over the Atlantic and around 400 kilometres south of Ireland about 550 kilometres from Shannon Airport the pilots detected abnormal vibrations from the aircraft's right General Electric CF6 engine. The crew also reported a noticeable smell inside the cabin, prompting them to discontinue the oceanic crossing and request an immediate diversion to Shannon, one of the primary diversion airports for North Atlantic flights. According to reports, the affected engine remained operational but was reduced to idle thrust as a precaution. Air traffic controllers cleared the aircraft to divert, after which the crew descended from cruise altitude to facilitate the approach into Shannon. Because of the amount of fuel still onboard, the pilots advised they would be conducting an overweight landing, a procedure in which an aircraft lands above its normal maximum landing weight when an immediate landing is considered the safest course of action. At Shannon Airport, emergency procedures were activated before the aircraft's arrival. Airport authorities alerted their fire and rescue service after the crew requested emergency vehicles to be positioned alongside the runway. The Boeing 767 landed safely on Runway 06 at approximately 3:57 p.m. local time after more than four hours in the air. Fire and rescue vehicles escorted the aircraft along the runway before it stopped briefly on a taxiway, where firefighters carried out a visual inspection of the right engine. Given the overweight landing, emergency personnel also examined the aircraft's undercarriage and landing gear to ensure there was no overheating caused by the heavier-than-normal touchdown. Following the inspections, the aircraft taxied under its own power to the terminal while accompanied by emergency vehicles. United Airlines confirmed that the diversion was carried out "to address an issue with one engine." The airline said all 227 occupants disembarked safely without injury. Passengers were provided with hotel accommodation, compensation where applicable, and were rebooked on the next available flights to their destinations. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft remained on the ground in Shannon following the incident while maintenance personnel conducted inspections to determine the cause of the reported engine vibrations and cabin odor. The remainder of Flight UA509 to Newark was cancelled. As of the latest available updates, aviation authorities had not released findings on the cause of the technical issue, and the aircraft continued to undergo maintenance evaluation before returning to service.

New Delhi, India: The Supreme Court of India has directed the Central Government to place before it, within two weeks, the draft rules framed under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, as it continues hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking stronger regulation of India's civil aviation sector, including safeguards against arbitrary airfare hikes and increasing ancillary charges imposed by airlines. The court has asked the Centre to submit the proposed rules in a sealed cover, even if they have not yet been laid before Parliament, and has listed the matter for further hearing on August 3, 2026. The matter is being heard by a Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, which has repeatedly expressed concern over the lack of regulatory oversight governing airfare pricing and passenger charges. During earlier hearings, the Bench observed that passengers flying on the same route on the same day often pay vastly different fares despite receiving the same service, raising questions over the transparency and fairness of airline pricing practices. The judges also highlighted the sharp surge in ticket prices during festivals, holidays and emergencies, describing such increases as a matter requiring regulatory attention. The PIL has been filed by social activist S. Laxminarayanan, represented by senior advocate Ravindra Srivastava, seeking comprehensive reforms to strengthen passenger rights. The petition calls for the establishment of an independent civil aviation regulator with powers to oversee airfare pricing, ensure transparency in dynamic pricing mechanisms, regulate ancillary charges and provide effective consumer protection across the aviation sector. According to the petitioner, while rules already existed under the Aircraft Act, 1937, inadequate implementation and enforcement allowed airlines to continue imposing arbitrary pricing and additional passenger fees. Apart from challenging unpredictable airfare fluctuations, the petition also targets airline baggage policies. It argues that many airlines have gradually reduced the complimentary checked baggage allowance for economy-class passengers from 25 kilograms to 15 kilograms, while simultaneously limiting travellers to a single checked bag. The plea contends that these changes effectively compel passengers to pay additional baggage fees without any corresponding reduction in ticket prices, amounting to an exploitative practice that has become a significant source of ancillary revenue for airlines. It further alleges that passengers are increasingly being charged separately for services that were previously included in the airfare. The Centre informed the Supreme Court that the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024 came into force in January 2025 and that the corresponding rules are presently under consultation and translation before being formally placed before Parliament. While acknowledging the concerns raised in the petition, the government stated that the Ministry of Civil Aviation is actively examining the issues relating to airfare regulation and passenger protection under the new legal framework. The court, however, directed the government to place the draft rules before it within two weeks so they can be examined during the ongoing proceedings. The litigation has been pending before the apex court for several months. On November 17, 2025, the Supreme Court sought responses from the Centre and other stakeholders after admitting the petition. During a hearing on January 19, 2026, the Bench observed that it would examine the issue of "unpredictable fluctuations" in airfares, particularly the steep increases witnessed during festive seasons. Subsequently, on May 15, 2026, the court remarked that there should be some rationalisation of airfares and questioned why airlines operating on the same route charge substantially different fares on the same day. At that stage, it also asked the Centre to explore measures that could provide relief to air travellers. The latest order marks another significant step in the Supreme Court's scrutiny of airline pricing practices and passenger rights. The court is expected to examine the finalized draft rules during the next hearing on August 3, when it will consider whether the new regulatory framework under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam adequately addresses concerns surrounding airfare transparency, ancillary charges, baggage policies and consumer protection in India's rapidly expanding aviation sector.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards.
