Internal Probe Reviews Boeing 737 Seat Failures In Jeju Air Crash That Killed 179 Onboard

Calgary, Canada: WestJet flight attendants launched a nationwide strike on Sunday after negotiations between Canada's second-largest airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) failed to produce a new collective agreement, triggering widespread flight cancellations during one of the country's busiest summer travel weekends. The strike involves approximately 4,400 cabin crew members represented by CUPE and follows months of contract negotiations centered on wages, compensation for duties performed on the ground, scheduling, and broader quality-of-life improvements. The previous collective agreement expired on December 31, 2025. WestJet said the work stoppage forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and significantly disrupted operations across its network. According to the airline, approximately 250,000 passengers have been affected by the disruption. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported that more than 600 flights had been cancelled by Sunday morning, while FlightAware also recorded hundreds of cancellations across the carrier's network. The industrial action began after the union issued a 72-hour strike notice on July 30. WestJet responded with a lockout notice while both sides continued negotiations until shortly before the deadline. Despite last-minute bargaining efforts, no agreement was reached. At the center of the dispute is compensation for work performed before takeoff and after landing. CUPE argues that flight attendants should be paid from the time they report for duty until they complete their shifts, rather than primarily for time when the aircraft is in motion. The union maintains that pre-flight safety checks, boarding, passenger assistance, deplaning and other ground responsibilities deserve dedicated compensation. WestJet disputes the claim that this work is unpaid, stating that its existing "credit hour" compensation model already accounts for flight time, delays and various ground duties through a blended pay system rather than a conventional hourly wage. Following the start of the strike, WestJet publicly released details of what it described as its final contract proposal. The airline said the offer included a 13% wage increase effective October 2026, annual wage increases of 2.5% through 2029, retroactive pay to January 1, 2026, and additional compensation for all hours worked before and after flights, which it said represented an increase equivalent to approximately 12% of salary. The proposal also included higher meal allowances, expanded vacation benefits, annual health-care spending accounts, improved maternity leave provisions, scheduling enhancements, reduced maximum duty periods, additional rest time, and compensation for certain operational disruptions such as reassigned duties and hotel delays. WestJet Group Chief Executive Officer Alexis von Hoensbroech said the airline remained committed to reaching a negotiated settlement, describing the proposal as an industry-leading package that addressed the union's stated priorities while supporting the airline's long-term sustainability. He said the company believed an agreement remained achievable despite the strike. CUPE's WestJet Component President Alia Hussain said the union continued to seek a fair contract that properly recognizes the value of cabin crew work. She stated that members were prepared to return to the bargaining table and emphasized that compensation for unpaid ground duties remains a significant issue alongside broader contractual improvements. The dispute mirrors a wider movement among North American flight attendants seeking compensation for time spent working before aircraft doors close and after flights arrive at the gate. Similar disputes have recently taken place at Air Canada, where cabin crew secured boarding pay earlier this year following industrial action. In recent years, Delta Air Lines became the first major North American carrier to introduce dedicated boarding pay, with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines later implementing similar compensation models. WestJet currently operates under a credit-hour pay system, with compensation varying according to seniority. According to the airline, the structure combines flight hours and several non-flying duties into a single rate of pay rather than paying separately for each duty performed during a shift. The strike comes during a peak summer travel period and a three-day holiday weekend in Canada, increasing its impact on passengers and businesses. WestJet normally operates more than 600 flights daily and transports tens of thousands of passengers across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Central America and Europe. The airline holds roughly 30% of Canada's domestic aviation market. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce described the work stoppage as a significant disruption for travellers and businesses, warning that prolonged industrial action could affect tourism, supply chains and economic activity during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Canada's federal government acknowledged the disruption, with Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu expressing disappointment that negotiations failed to reach a settlement while reiterating that durable agreements are generally achieved through collective bargaining. As of publication, the government had not announced any formal intervention in the dispute. WestJet said affected passengers would be eligible for refunds or rebooking options where applicable and advised customers to monitor their flight status before travelling. Meanwhile, both the airline and CUPE indicated they remain willing to resume negotiations in an effort to reach a new collective agreement.

Athens, Greece: A Danish pilot and a Greek fire service liaison officer were killed after two firefighting helicopters collided mid-air while battling a major wildfire west of Athens on Sunday, marking another tragedy as Greece faces multiple fast-moving wildfires amid extreme weather conditions. The collision occurred over the Psatha area near Porto Germeno, west of the Greek capital, where emergency crews were battling a wind-driven wildfire that has been burning since Friday. According to Greek authorities, both helicopters were Bell firefighting helicopters operating on aerial water-dropping missions over the fire zone. Each helicopter carried two crew members. One aircraft crashed following the collision, killing its Danish pilot and a Greek fire service liaison officer. The second helicopter managed to make an emergency landing, and its occupants, a British pilot and a Greek crew member survived with minor injuries. Both survivors were transported to hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the survivors. The exact cause of the mid-air collision remains under investigation. Officials have not indicated whether the helicopters made physical contact during water-dropping operations or while manoeuvring over the wildfire. No preliminary findings have been released, and investigators are expected to examine flight operations, communications and weather conditions in the area. The helicopters were supporting efforts to contain a rapidly spreading wildfire near Porto Germeno, a coastal community on the Gulf of Corinth. Strong, gusting winds significantly complicated firefighting operations, limiting aircraft movements and, at times, preventing helicopters and water bombers from safely collecting seawater for repeated drops. Nearly 500 firefighters supported by 23 aircraft were deployed to combat the blaze. The fire, which ignited near Agios Vasileios on Friday, spread quickly through dry forests toward Porto Germeno and surrounding mountainous terrain west of Athens. Authorities ordered evacuations for the communities of Kandili, Agia Skepi, and Toutouli as flames advanced. Earlier in the emergency, firefighters evacuated 254 people by sea on Friday and another 12 on Saturday, with maritime evacuations becoming the safest option after smoke and flames threatened the limited road access from coastal settlements. Wildfire meteorologist Theodore Giannaros estimated the blaze had affected approximately 40 to 50 square kilometres (15–19 square miles), although Greek authorities had not issued an official burn-area estimate. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed condolences following the accident. "The loss of the Greek coordinator and the Danish pilot at the time they were attempting the major fire in Porto Germeno fills us all with grief," Mitsotakis said in a statement. In a separate message, the Prime Minister also expressed his "deepest sorrow" over the deaths and extended condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of those killed while responding to the wildfire emergency. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also paid tribute to the crews, saying: "It takes a special courage to fly towards the flames." Greek authorities have launched an investigation into Sunday's helicopter collision. Officials are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the accident while aerial firefighting operations continue against multiple active wildfires across the country.

13 Killed After Aerodiana Plane Crashes Near Peru's Nazca Lines; Probe Underway SEO DES: Victims included 7 Italians, 2 Spaniards, 2 Germans and two Peruvian crew; A post-crash fire left no survivors despite firefighters and police response SOCIAL: An Aerodiana Cessna Grand Caravan sightseeing flight crashed near Peru's Nazca Lines on August 1, killing all 13 people onboard, including 11 foreign tourists and two Peruvian crew members. The aircraft had departed Pisco Airport for a scenic flight. The crew declared an emergency before losing radio contact. The aircraft crashed near Nazca and caught fire, leaving no survivors. Firefighters and police responded to the scene. Peru's MTC and CIAA are investigating the crash. The cause remains unknown, while Aerodiana said it will review its flight schedule in line with authorities' directives. Nazca, Peru: All 13 people aboard an Aerodiana sightseeing flight were killed after a Cessna Caravan C-208 (Grand Caravan) crashed near Peru's world-famous Nazca Lines on August 1, 2026, prompting a government investigation into one of the country's deadliest recent tourist aviation accidents. According to Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), the aircraft was carrying 11 foreign tourists and two Peruvian crew members when it went down in the Socos area, approximately 6 km from the city of Nazca and about 19 km from the Nazca Lines archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its giant desert geoglyphs. The aircraft belonged to Aerodiana, a Peruvian sightseeing operator that has conducted aerial tours over the Nazca Lines for about 14 years using Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft. The flight departed from Pisco Airport, in Peru's Ica region, at approximately 12:10 p.m. local time for a scenic tour over the Nazca Lines before returning to its departure airport. At around 1:00 p.m. local time, the crew reported an emergency to the Nazca Airport control tower. Shortly afterward, all radio communication with the aircraft was lost. Authorities later located the wreckage in the Socos area, where the aircraft had crashed and caught fire. According to Peruvian broadcaster RPP, the post-impact fire engulfed the wreckage, making any rescue impossible. Firefighters and municipal police officers were dispatched to extinguish the fire and conduct the initial emergency response, but there were no survivors. Footage circulating on social media showed smoke rising from the wreckage on the arid plains. The victims included seven Italian nationals, two Spanish nationals, and two German nationals, along with the two Peruvian flight crew, pilot Américo Salazar and co-pilot Irenka Guanilo del Carpio. Peru's Transport Ministry identified the crew members as pilot Américo Salazar and co-pilot Irenka Guanilo del Carpio. The Italian victims were reported to be between 18 and 54 years old, while the two Spanish passengers were both 52 years old, and the German tourists were 77 and 78 years old. The cause of the crash has not been determined, and authorities have launched a formal investigation. The investigation is being led by Peru's aviation authorities under the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the country's Commission for the Investigation of Aviation Accidents (CIAA). In an official statement, Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications confirmed that the aircraft "was carrying 11 foreign tourists and two crew members" and said the crew had reported an emergency before communication was lost. The ministry also confirmed the location of the crash and said the incident remains under investigation. Aerodiana also issued a statement following the accident, saying it "will assess its flight schedule in accordance with the directives of the relevant authorities." Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori expressed condolences to the victims' families following the tragedy and said a temporary suspension of operations at the airport was being considered while authorities reviewed official reports into the accident. Although investigators have not linked weather to the accident, sightseeing flights departing from María Reiche Airport near the Nazca Lines had been suspended the previous day after winds exceeded 40 km/h (25 mph), reducing visibility with blowing dust. Local media said those conditions forced at least two sightseeing aircraft to divert to Marcona Airport, including one carrying Peruvian tourists and another carrying foreign visitors. Authorities have not indicated whether those weather conditions played any role in Saturday's crash. The Nazca Lines remain one of Peru's most visited attractions, drawing approximately 100,000 visitors annually. Because the enormous geoglyphs can only be fully appreciated from the air, sightseeing flights are a popular tourist activity, though the region has experienced several fatal air tour accidents over the past two decades.

Layton, United States: Two people were hospitalized after a small aircraft crash-landed and overturned on a highway in Layton, Utah, late Thursday night, prompting a multi-agency emergency response and a federal investigation into the cause of the accident. According to the Layton Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 11:57 p.m. on July 30 following reports of a plane crash near State Route 193 (Antelope Drive) and Fort Lane, close to Hill Air Force Base in Davis County. Emergency responders arrived to find the aircraft upside down after it came to rest on or near the roadway. The aircraft was carrying two occupants, both of whom were able to exit the aircraft on their own before first responders arrived. They were treated at the scene and transported to local hospitals with injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening or stable. No injuries were reported on the ground. The Layton Fire Department, Layton Police Department, and North Davis Fire District responded to the scene and secured the area while paramedics treated the occupants. Firefighters also mitigated potential hazards associated with the overturned aircraft before the site was turned over to federal investigators. In an official statement, the Layton Fire Department said: "Both occupants self-extricated prior to emergency crews arriving and were transported to local hospitals." The department added that the crash remains under investigation by federal authorities. Authorities temporarily closed portions of State Route 193 to allow emergency operations and preserve the crash site for investigators. The aircraft remained at the location overnight while documentation and recovery efforts were carried out. A nearby resident told local media the aircraft appeared to descend unusually low before impact. Eyewitness video circulating online reportedly captured the airplane's final moments before the crash, with witnesses suggesting the engine sounded abnormal just before the aircraft struck the ground. However, officials have not confirmed any mechanical problem or engine failure, and no cause has been determined.

San Diego, United States: A US Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II stealth fighter jet crashed during a routine flight operation at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California, on July 31, prompting a major emergency response, igniting a brush fire and triggering an official investigation into the cause of the accident. The pilot, who was the only person onboard, ejected safely moments before impact and survived with non life threatening injuries. No fatalities or injuries on the ground were reported. The aircraft involved was an F-35B Lightning II, the short takeoff and vertical landing variant of the fifth generation stealth fighter manufactured by Lockheed Martin and operated by the US Marine Corps. According to the Marine Corps, the aircraft was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, based at MCAS Miramar. The crash occurred at approximately 10 am local time on the air station's flightline near the runway. Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft attempting what appeared to be a hover or vertical flight maneuver before it suddenly descended, crashed and erupted into flames. Television footage from the scene showed the fighter breaking into major sections while thick black smoke billowed from the wreckage. The impact also sparked a small vegetation or brush fire that was quickly contained by emergency crews. The Marine Corps confirmed the pilot successfully ejected at a very low altitude before the aircraft struck the ground. The pilot was transported to a local medical facility in stable condition for evaluation and treatment of non life threatening injuries. Officials said no other people were aboard the aircraft and no civilian casualties were reported. In its official statement, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar said, "Emergency personnel responded this morning to an aircraft mishap on the flightline of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar at approximately 10:00 am local time today, involving an F-35B assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing." The service later added, "The pilot ejected, was transported to a local medical facility in stable condition for evaluation and treatment of non life threatening injuries." The Marine Corps classified the event as a Class A mishap, the military's most serious accident category. A Class A mishap is designated when an aircraft is destroyed, damage exceeds USD 2 million or a fatality occurs. In this case, the classification reflects the destruction of the aircraft even though the pilot survived. Authorities have not determined or announced the cause of the crash. Military officials said the incident remains under investigation and have not indicated whether it resulted from a mechanical failure, pilot error or another factor. No preliminary findings have been released. The F-35B is one of three variants of the Joint Strike Fighter family and is uniquely capable of short takeoff and vertical landing operations, allowing it to operate from amphibious assault ships and austere airfields. The aircraft has an estimated unit cost of about USD 109 million and forms a key part of the US Marine Corps' tactical aviation fleet.

London, United Kingdom: International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and LEVEL, has revised its 2026 capacity outlook to flat, abandoning its earlier plan to grow capacity by around 3% this year after the conflict in the Middle East disrupted operations, pushed jet fuel prices sharply higher and altered global travel patterns. The revised guidance was announced alongside the group's first-half 2026 financial results, which showed resilient passenger demand despite mounting geopolitical and cost pressures. The airline group now expects available seat kilometres (ASKs) in 2026 to remain unchanged from 2025, a significant downgrade from the growth forecast it had maintained at the end of the first quarter. According to the company, the revision reflects lower-than-planned flying caused by the Middle East conflict, aircraft availability constraints linked to engine issues, and a strategy aimed at protecting profitability amid higher operating costs. Despite the weaker capacity outlook, IAG Chief Executive Officer Luis Gallego said the group remained confident about long-term demand and the resilience of its business model. "With these results IAG has again demonstrated that its excellent fundamentals are supporting continued value creation for our shareholders, despite the impact of the crisis in the Middle East and wider geopolitical events. "We are well-positioned to deal with these near-term headwinds with a diverse portfolio of world-class brands in large and attractive markets; industry-leading margins; significant free cash flow and a strong balance sheet; and attractive shareholder returns. "Our long-term transformation programme has created the resilience that we are now benefiting from - products and services that our customers value, efficient and punctual operations and a low cost base." Gallego added that the company remained confident in its strategy, stating, "We remain confident in our business model and strategy that has made us one of the best-performing airline groups in the world." The company also reaffirmed that travel demand across its network continues to remain strong despite recent geopolitical volatility. IAG said bookings for the second half of 2026 remained encouraging, with approximately 57% of second-half capacity already booked and booked revenue broadly in line with the same period last year. While long-haul markets are expected to remain healthy, management warned that European short-haul markets are becoming increasingly competitive as airlines redeploy aircraft from disrupted Middle East routes into other regions. Financially, IAG reported first-half revenue of €16.064 billion, up 1% year-on-year, driven by continued strong passenger demand across its portfolio of airlines. Operating profit before exceptional items stood at €1.757 billion, compared with €1.878 billion a year earlier, while operating margin before exceptional items declined from 11.8% to 10.9%. Reported operating profit fell 14.4% to €1.608 billion, and profit after tax declined 20.6% to €1.033 billion, reflecting higher fuel costs, restructuring expenses and adverse foreign exchange impacts. The group's fuel bill emerged as one of the biggest challenges during the first half of the year. Fuel costs and emissions charges increased by 12.3% to €3.956 billion, largely because commodity fuel prices climbed sharply following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Although IAG's hedging strategy helped offset part of the increase, management expects total fuel costs for 2026 to range between €8.3 billion and €8.6 billion, depending on market prices during the remainder of the year. According to the company, around 60% of the higher fuel costs are expected to be recovered through a combination of higher fares and cost-saving initiatives, while the remaining increase will continue to weigh on profitability. Management said its fuel hedging policy remains unchanged and continues to provide protection against commodity price volatility. The Middle East conflict significantly disrupted IAG's operations, forcing the suspension of flights to Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, Tel Aviv and Jeddah. In response, British Airways redeployed aircraft to destinations including Bangkok, Bengaluru, Delhi, Malé, Nairobi and Singapore, while Iberia shifted capacity to Japan, Latin America, North America and the Spanish Islands. Despite the disruption, demand remained resilient across the group's network. British Airways continued to benefit from strong premium and corporate travel on North Atlantic routes, while Iberia expanded its long-haul network with Airbus A321XLR aircraft. Latin America also remained a growth market, although IAG said competition in European short-haul markets intensified as airlines redeployed aircraft from the Middle East, limiting fare increases to offset higher fuel costs. The group said it would continue reviewing winter capacity to protect profitability. IAG also continued its transformation programme, with British Airways rolling out its new digital booking platform and mobile app, while Iberia and Vueling advanced fleet and network modernisation initiatives. The group is also expanding Starlink high-speed connectivity across its long-haul fleet. Looking ahead, IAG expects long-haul demand to remain strong while short-haul markets remain highly competitive. The group reaffirmed its target of delivering a 12% to 15% operating margin, generating significant free cash flow and maintaining a strong balance sheet despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and elevated fuel costs.

Bangor, United States: Swiss International Air Lines has clarified that smoke detected onboard flight LX16 from Zurich to New York on July 27 was caused by a damaged earphone charging case trapped inside a Business Class seat. The incident occurred while the Airbus-operated flight was en route from Zurich Airport (ZRH) to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York. During the flight, smoke was reported onboard, prompting the crew to follow emergency procedures and divert the aircraft to the nearest suitable airport, Bangor International Airport (BGR) in Maine. Initial reports indicated that smoke had been detected in the forward section of the aircraft, with preliminary information suggesting a possible cockpit-related issue. However, after a technical investigation, SWISS determined that the source was an earphone charging case containing a lithium-ion battery. According to the airline, the charging case had slipped into a gap near a seat in the front Business Class cabin, where it became trapped and was damaged. The damage caused the device to emit smoke, creating a potential fire risk inside the cabin. SWISS highlighted that many personal electronic devices carried by passengers use lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat when damaged, malfunction, or become trapped, potentially leading to smoke or fire. The airline advised passengers to immediately inform cabin crew if an electronic device becomes unusually hot, damaged, or falls into an inaccessible area such as underneath a seat. The airline also noted that its aircraft are equipped with lithium battery safety bags designed to safely contain affected devices if required. During the LX16 incident, the flight crew responded according to established emergency procedures and simulator training, ensuring the aircraft was diverted safely to Bangor, where the situation could be assessed and handled. SWISS has not reported any injuries related to the incident. The clarification comes after the airline completed its technical assessment of the event and identified the damaged charging case as the source of the smoke.

Wausau, United States: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) preliminary report, reported publicly on 13 October 2026, details the pilot’s account, fuel-system inspection and aircraft damage. During a post-accident interview with a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector, the pilot’s aviation mechanic said the pilot attributed the power loss to his delay in switching tanks and not turning on the electric fuel-boost pump. The NTSB has not issued a final probable-cause determination, and the investigation remains ongoing. A delayed switch between fuel tanks and failure to activate the electric fuel-boost pump were cited by the pilot as reasons for the loss of engine power that forced a Beechcraft K35 carrying US lawmaker Tom Tiffany to make an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau, Wisconsin, on 12 September 2026. The aircraft, registered N6071E, was substantially damaged in the accident. Both occupants, pilot Leonard Boltz, 73, and passenger Tiffany, 68 sustained minor injuries and escaped from the aircraft before being rescued. The NTSB report states that the accident occurred at approximately 8:49 p.m. Central Daylight Time on 12 September 2026, near Wausau, Wisconsin. The Beech K35 was operating a personal flight under Part 91 of the US Federal Aviation Regulations from La Crosse Regional Airport to Wausau Downtown Airport. According to the report, the pilot was flying in the airport traffic pattern for landing at Wausau Downtown Airport. Shortly after extending the landing gear while abeam the runway threshold, he observed a “higher-than-normal engine exhaust gas temperature (EGT).” The report states: “According to the pilot, the higher-than-normal engine EGT reminded him to switch fuel tanks.” The pilot selected the right main fuel tank and moved the mixture and throttle levers fully forward, but the engine did not respond. He told investigators that he did not activate the electric fuel-boost pump while attempting to restore engine power. The pilot then maneuvered the aircraft towards the runway and prepared for a water landing. The aircraft struck the water, substantially damaging its fuselage, left wing, left aileron and engine mount. After the aircraft was recovered from Lake Wausau, investigators examined its fuel system and cockpit controls. The inspection found: The left main fuel tank was empty. The right main tank and both auxiliary fuel tanks were full of fuel. All fuel-tank caps were secure. The electric fuel-boost pump switch was in the OFF position. The fuel selector valve was positioned to the right main fuel tank. The throttle, mixture and propeller controls were nearly fully forward. These findings document the aircraft’s condition after the accident. The NTSB has not yet issued a final determination establishing the complete sequence of events that led to the loss of engine power. Earlier on 12 September, the pilot flew the aircraft from Langlade County Airport in Antigo, Wisconsin, to La Crosse Regional Airport. The aircraft departed Antigo with 70 gallons of fuel distributed across four tanks: 25 gallons in each main tank and 10 gallons in each auxiliary tank. The pilot did not refuel at La Crosse before departing for Wausau. He told investigators that he had selected the left main fuel tank for both flight legs, except for a brief period when he selected the auxiliary tanks during cruise flight before returning to the left tank. The flight from La Crosse to Wausau departed at approximately 8:15 p.m. local time. During the approach to Wausau, the pilot noticed the elevated exhaust gas temperature and switched to the right main tank. Despite advancing the engine controls, power was not restored. The NTSB report records the pilot’s explanation to his aviation mechanic following the accident: “the loss of engine power was due to his delay in switching fuel tanks and not turning on the electric fuel boost pump.” The aircraft landed in Lake Wausau after the pilot was unable to restore engine power. Both the occupants managed to exit the aircraft and reach shallow water. They called 911 and were rescued by a Wausau Fire Department airboat shortly after the accident. Both men sustained minor injuries. The aircraft remained in the water until recovery crews removed it on 14 September, with the recovery operation involving divers and other personnel. It was subsequently secured in a hangar for examination. The NTSB’s preliminary findings identify the pilot’s reported fuel-management errors and document the condition of the fuel tanks, selector valve and boost-pump switch after the accident. However, preliminary reports are subject to change as an investigation progresses. The report does not constitute a final probable-cause determination. Further investigative work may clarify the circumstances surrounding the engine-power loss and the emergency landing.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
