Cochin: On December 17, 2024, Air India Express Flight IX471, flying from Cochin International Airport to Bahrain International Airport, was forced to return to Cochin shortly after takeoff owing to tire debris discovered on the runway.

The flight, which had 105 passengers on board and had taken off at 10:35 AM IST, was warned of a potential tire problem by airport personnel, according to an airport spokesperson.

The plane was told to head back to Cochin as a precaution. At 12:35 PM IST, the aircraft made a safe landing after performing a low-altitude flyover to enable ground crew to examine any obvious damage.

A full emergency was declared at the airport to ensure the aircraft’s safe return, but it was later removed following the successful landing. An alternate flight that carried all of the passengers departed at approximately 2:45 PM IST.

To find out what caused the tire issue, airport authorities have launched a comprehensive inquiry. In order to find any mechanical issues that might have contributed to the catastrophe, technical experts are examining the aircraft.
