The accident occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. local time on May 4, 2026, in the canton of Ticino. According to initial reports, the helicopter was attempting to approach a construction site in the Mezzovico-Vira area when it suddenly lost altitude and crashed.
The helicopter was operated by a private company. According to the Aviation Safety Network, the helicopter involved in the Mezzovico-Vira accident was an Airbus Helicopters H125, registered HB-ZEJ (MSN 9856), manufactured in 2025 and powered by a Safran Arriel 2D engine.
The aircraft, listed under owner/operator Tarmac Aviation, was engaged in a non-scheduled passenger/charter flight when it made a hard landing during the landing phase near a worksite at Via Vira around 16:30 on May 4, 2026, in Mezzovico-Vira, Switzerland.
A total of six people were on board, including the pilot. All occupants sustained injuries of varying severity:
- 1 person: Life-threatening (critical condition)
- 2 people: Moderately injured
- 3 people: Minor injuries
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims so far. Investigators have stated that the cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage.
The helicopter reportedly fell from a height of around 20 metres during its approach, but no confirmed technical or operational cause has been identified yet.
