The fundraising comes as soaring aviation fuel prices, flight disruptions and longer routings have added financial pressure on airlines while Akasa continues its aggressive expansion strategy. Akasa plans to raise approximately ₹800 crore (US$84 million) through equity and at least ₹250 crore (US$26 million) through debt. The airline has approached both its existing shareholders and two new investors for the equity portion, while simultaneously holding discussions with state-run banks to secure debt financing under the Indian government's special credit line introduced to support airlines affected by the Iran conflict. Under the airline's pricing formula, the April-May average fuel price would have placed the surcharge in a higher pricing band. The airlines review international fuel surcharges every two months, meaning the significant decline in fuel prices recorded during June and July is expected to be reflected in the September-October surcharge revision. If fuel prices remain near current levels, passengers purchasing tickets during that period are expected to benefit from lower fuel surcharges. The surcharge increase comes as international travelers to Japan are already facing higher travel-related costs introduced on July 1. Japan increased its international departure tax from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 (approximately US$18) per passenger, while visa fees rose from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000 (around US$92), marking the first increase in visa charges since 1978. The increase in female pilots forms part of broader workforce diversity objectives outlined by the SIA Group. Singapore Airlines had set a target of achieving a 25% increase in female pilots from FY2020-21 levels by FY2025-26, while Scoot established a similar target using 2021 as its baseline. According to the latest sustainability report, Singapore Airlines achieved its target, whereas Scoot did not fully meet its corresponding goal. The airline also established leadership diversity targets. Scoot achieved its objective of increasing women in director-level and higher positions by at least 25% from 2021 levels. The gradual rise in female pilots has been supported by pioneering aviators who entered the profession through unconventional routes. Among them is Captain Vanessa Khaw, who began her aviation career as a Singapore Airlines cabin crew member in 2004. Inspired by time spent observing flight operations from the cockpit during meal service, she later self-funded her commercial pilot training, joined Tigerair in 2010, transitioned to Scoot following the airlines' merger, and now serves as an Airbus A320/A321 captain and flight instructor training new pilots. Another example is Senior First Officer Lim Wen Shan, who previously flew C-130 transport aircraft with the Republic of Singapore Air Force before transitioning to commercial aviation in 2019.
