Colombo, Sri Lanka: In a significant step toward reviving its long-haul capabilities, SriLankan Airlines has taken delivery of its first widebody aircraft in over seven years. The Airbus A330-200, bearing registration 4R-ALT, landed at Bandaranaike International Airport on June 3 and is expected to enter service within weeks. The newly acquired aircraft has been leased for a period of eight years from Carlyle Aviation Partners. Though nearly 14 years old, the twin-aisle jet is expected to play a pivotal role in the airline’s interim fleet strategy. Configured in a two-class layout with a total of 260 seats, the A330-200 previously operated under Garuda Indonesia and South Korea’s Fly Gangwon. The lease agreement, reportedly valued at USD 275,000 per month, reflects SriLankan’s current approach to balance operational needs with financial constraints. The airline had previously faced challenges with its long-haul fleet, including engine issues and the cancellation of newer aircraft orders, which led to reduced connectivity on major international routes. According to airline officials, the latest widebody addition is the first of at least three aircraft SriLankan aims to induct in the near term. The management has initiated talks to lease two more widebody jets by the end of 2025. These aircraft are expected to support the reopening of long-haul routes that were suspended over the past few years, including services to Beijing, key cities in Australia, and parts of East Africa. The arrival of 4R-ALT marks the beginning of what the airline describes as a “measured rebuilding process.” In its latest five-year strategic plan submitted to the Sri Lankan government, SriLankan Airlines has outlined its ambition to double its current fleet by 2030. The expansion plan is expected to include a mix of widebody and narrowbody aircraft, with an emphasis on operational sustainability and route profitability. The announcement comes days after an unrelated incident involving SriLankan Airlines Flight UL306, which was en route from Colombo to Singapore on June 5 when it experienced a technical fault mid-flight. The aircraft was diverted and safely landed at Kuala Namu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia. All passengers and crew were reported safe, and a relief flight was arranged to continue the journey to Singapore on June 6. SriLankan Airlines currently operates a modest fleet, with several aircraft approaching the upper limits of their service life. As the national carrier navigates a path toward financial recovery and increased regional competition, the arrival of widebody aircraft such as the A330-200 is expected to be instrumental in restoring long-haul operations and rebuilding passenger confidence. While challenges remain, the strategic focus on fleet renewal and route expansion signals a forward-looking approach for Sri Lanka’s flag carrier as it attempts to reassert its presence in the international aviation market.

New Delhi, India: In a significant development, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation regulatory body, has identified multiple safety and compliance violations by Turkish Airlines during unannounced inspections conducted between May 29 and June 2, 2025. These inspections took place at major Indian airports, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru. Key Findings from the DGCA Inspections Unauthorized Carriage of Dangerous Goods: One of the most serious violations involved the transportation of hazardous materials, specifically explosives, without the necessary permissions or proper declaration. This breach of air cargo safety norms poses significant security risks. Unqualified Ground Personnel: At Bengaluru airport, a marshaller responsible for directing aircraft during taxiing operations was found operating without proper authorization or a valid competency card, contravening Indian aviation regulations. Improper Aircraft Maintenance Procedures: Inspections revealed that, in some instances, aircraft maintenance was conducted by technicians instead of certified Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs). For example, at Bengaluru airport, an AME was unavailable during the arrival of a flight, and the procedure was instead handled by a technician. This violates aviation safety protocols, as only certified AMEs are authorized to perform such tasks. Lack of Formal Agreements with Ground Handling Agents: At Hyderabad and Bengaluru airports, Turkish Airlines was utilizing ground handling services from Globe Ground India without formal Service Level Agreements (SLAs). This lack of formal agreements led to accountability issues with essential ground equipment, including ladders, trolleys, and Ground Power Units (GPUs), which lacked proper monitoring and handover procedures. DGCA's Directive and Future Actions In response to these findings, the DGCA has directed Turkish Airlines to promptly address these violations and ensure full compliance with both International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and Indian aviation regulations. The regulator emphasized that further inspections will be conducted to ensure continuous safety oversight. These developments come amid strained diplomatic relations between India and Turkey, particularly following Turkey's support for Pakistan in regional conflicts. In a related move, India's aviation ministry has also revoked the security clearance of Turkish ground handling firm Çelebi, halting its operations in the country. Airlines failing to adhere to these standards may face increased scrutiny and potential operational restrictions.

The court found that the airline's outsourcing of these roles in 2020 was a deliberate move to prevent employees from exercising their workplace rights, such as engaging in protected industrial action and collective bargaining, thereby violating the Fair Work Act . The Legal Journey Qantas had previously appealed a Federal Court decision that deemed the outsourcing unlawful. However, the High Court unanimously dismissed the appeal, affirming that the airline's actions were not solely driven by commercial considerations but also aimed at undermining employee rights . Following the ruling, the Federal Court ordered Qantas to compensate affected workers. In a test case, three former employees were awarded a total of $170,000 for non-economic losses, with individual amounts of $30,000, $40,000, and $100,000 . The total compensation for all affected workers is expected to be substantial, with estimates suggesting it could exceed $100 million . Corporate Accountability and Cultural Reflection The Federal Court is now conducting hearings to determine the penalties Qantas must face. Justice Michael Lee has expressed skepticism about the sincerity of Qantas' remorse, noting the airline's failure to present key decision-makers for scrutiny and its prolonged legal battles . A Broader Industry Issue Qantas is not alone in facing scrutiny over labor practices. Wizz Air, a European low-cost carrier, has also been embroiled in labor controversies. In April 2021, a Romanian court ruled that Wizz Air had violated collective dismissal procedures and ordered the reinstatement of four pilots .
