Ontario, Canada: The Ontario Court of Appeal has upheld a ruling that Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) must compensate the families of Flight PS752 victims without being bound by the liability cap of US $180,000 per passenger. In its August 12, 2025 decision, the appellate court confirmed the findings of the Ontario Superior Court, which concluded that UIA acted negligently by allowing the January 8, 2020 flight to operate despite escalating military tensions in the region. This negligence removes the standard compensation limit set under the Montreal Convention. On Jan 8, 2020, Flight PS752, a Boeing 737-800, departed Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport shortly after 6 a.m. local time. The Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims welcomed the ruling, stating that it ensures the airline is held accountable for its actions, while emphasizing that Iran and the IRGC remain responsible for the attack. The judgment means UIA faces the possibility of paying significantly higher compensation than the usual limit. Lawyers for the families described the ruling as a landmark decision that reinforces the duty of airlines to evaluate risks when operating in or near conflict zones. UIA had appealed a 2024 ruling from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice that found the carrier negligent for operating flights out of Tehran during a period of extreme tension between Iran and the U.S. The airline admitted it had a duty of care for the passengers and crew of Flight 752 but argued that its actions did not lead to the occupants' damages. New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, after an inspection revealed that the carrier had been using certain pilot training simulators without securing the necessary regulatory approval. According to DGCA officials, routine surveillance and compliance checks found that a few Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators at IndiGo’s training facility were not in line with the mandatory certification standards under Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) for pilot training. These simulators are used for crucial functions such as type rating, recurrent training, and proficiency checks, all of which are mandatory for maintaining a pilot’s operational license. “The operator has been asked to explain why these devices were used for training and assessment without approval. This is a serious compliance lapse,” a senior DGCA official said on condition of anonymity. The notice gives the airline a period of seven days to respond, failing which the regulator may initiate enforcement action, including possible suspension of related training approvals. IndiGo, in an emailed statement to The Economic Times, acknowledged receiving the notice and confirmed it had “temporarily withdrawn the use of the identified simulators pending regulatory clearance.” The airline added that it is “fully cooperating with the DGCA to ensure that all training devices meet the required technical and regulatory standards.” This is not the first time the DGCA has tightened oversight on simulator usage in India’s civil aviation sector. Poland, Europe: Poland’s Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) , one of Europe’s most ambitious transport infrastructure projects, has reached a major milestone with the official approval of its passenger terminal design, moving the €30–32.5 billion development closer to construction. The government-backed mega hub is projected to handle up to 44 million passengers annually by 2032, with integrated high-speed rail links designed to transform regional and international connectivity. According to the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny company, the terminal and underground railway station design, developed by Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, has been formally handed over and accepted. The documentation is now being prepared for submission to regional authorities to obtain building permits. The facility will span approximately 450,000 square meters, making it nearly three times the size of Warsaw Chopin Airport’s terminal. The three-level terminal layout will place check-in facilities and Schengen departures on the top level (+2), non-Schengen arrivals and transfer areas on level +1, and baggage reclaim alongside bus connections on the ground level. Initial capacity is set at 34 million passengers per year, with expansion potential to 44 million. The design also includes up to 67 aircraft stands, 140 check-in desks, and the ability to process up to 11,000 passengers per hour. The construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, starting with deep foundation works. The underground railway station and connecting tunnel are targeted for completion by 2029, with the entire airport planned to become operational by the end of 2032. A general contractor tender is currently open, while other tenders including for the baggage handling system are already in progress. The company anticipates awarding contracts worth nearly PLN 30 billion by the end of 2025. With an estimated total cost exceeding €30 billion, CPK is positioned as a direct competitor to hubs such as London Heathrow and Dubai International. The mega hub will integrate aviation, high-speed rail, and road networks, with almost 2,000 kilometers of new high-speed lines planned. These will link major Polish cities and connect to the EU’s TEN-T corridors, including the strategic Rail Baltica route to the Baltic states. The Polish government under Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed in June 2024 that the CPK project would proceed, albeit with adjustments to ensure it complements rather than entirely replaces existing airports in Warsaw. The Mumbai-based carrier, which operated its maiden flight on August 7, 2022, has grown into a network covering 28 destinations, 23 domestic and five international cities, including Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Doha, Riyadh, and Jeddah. The airline said it aims to leverage upcoming infrastructure at Navi Mumbai International Airport and Noida International Airport to deepen its domestic network and support long-haul regional routes. Akasa Air has carried more than 19 million passengers since inception, including over 8 million in the last 12 months alone. The airline has recorded a consistent load factor above 87 percent and completed over 100,000 departures more than 3,800 of which were international flights. In addition, the carrier has transported over 131,000 tonnes of cargo and secured partnerships with more than 1,150 corporate clients. The airline currently operates a fleet of 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in 189- and 197-seat configurations. Orders include additional Boeing 737 MAX 8, MAX 200, and MAX 10 aircraft, which will be inducted over the next several years. Speaking to The Times of India Akasa Air founder and chief executive officer Vinay Dube said Boeing’s production output is “gradually returning to its historic production strength” after a prolonged slowdown, adding that this will allow the airline to receive deliveries on schedule and support its growth strategy. In the financial year ending March 2025, Akasa Air reported a 49 percent year-on-year increase in revenue and a 48 percent rise in available seat kilometres. The airline has set a target of increasing capacity by over 30 percent in the current fiscal year. The carrier also entered into a codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways in March 2025, enabling passengers to book combined itineraries across both networks. The move will see the airline withdraw completely from Bergerac, Brive, and Strasbourg airports and cancel 25 routes nationwide. The cuts follow a 180% rise in France’s “solidarity tax” on air tickets, implemented in March 2025. The levy, originally designed to fund public health and climate initiatives, was sharply increased by the French government earlier this year. The advisory, issued to all airport operators, calls for maximum vigilance from September 22 to October 2 and includes all airports, airstrips, helipads, flight schools, training institutes and other civil aviation installations across the country. The alert is based on intelligence suggesting a possible threat originating from a Pakistani-based terror group. The BCAS circular instructs airport operators to implement heightened security protocols, including intensified passenger screening, strict ID verification of staff and vendors, continuous CCTV monitoring, and increased patrolling of sensitive airport zones such as parking areas and terminal entry points. The advisory is part of routine precautionary measures often issued around national holidays or major events. Such alerts are typically seen during Independence Day, Republic Day, and large-scale religious festivals like Durga Puja. The outage, which began around 4:05 p.m. BST at the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) Swanwick control centre, forced controllers to switch to a backup system, cutting the nation’s air traffic capacity for several hours. Although the backup system was restored within 20 minutes, the immediate effect was severe: departures and arrivals were throttled down from a standard rate of roughly 45 flights per hour to just 32. The reduced throughput created a cascading backlog that extended well into the night. According to The Independent, 84 outbound and 71 inbound services were cancelled by late evening, amounting to at least 155 total cancellations across UK airports. Heathrow experienced the most severe disruption, with 29 departures and 17 arrivals cancelled. Other hubs, including Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London City, also reported extensive delays.
