Frankfurt, Germany: Lufthansa Group announced on Monday that it plans to eliminate around 4,000 administrative positions by 2030 as part of a wider restructuring strategy aimed at boosting profitability and efficiency through automation, artificial intelligence, and streamlined operations. In recent years, the airline has faced challenges in controlling costs and driving growth amid labor issues. Last year, it issued two profit warnings and the 8% margin target was postponed to 2028–2030. The job reductions will primarily affect back-office, headquarters, and shared service roles in Germany. Flight operations, including pilots and cabin crew, are not expected to be impacted. The decision was unveiled during Lufthansa’s Capital Markets Day, the airline’s first in six years where executives presented new financial targets. The group now aims for an adjusted operating margin of 8 to 10 percent by 2028, annual free cash flow exceeding €2.5 billion, and a 15 to 20 percent return on capital employed before taxes. Alongside workforce cuts, Lufthansa confirmed plans to modernize its fleet with the delivery of more than 230 new aircraft by the end of the decade, including about 100 long-haul planes. Management said the investments, combined with digitalization, will drive efficiency across its airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Eurowings. Chief Executive Carsten Spohr emphasized the need for structural change, noting that consolidation of overlapping functions and the use of digital tools will “make the group more competitive and resilient.” The announcement sparked criticism from German labor unions. Representatives from Ver.di, one of the country’s unions, warned of the social consequences of the cuts and demanded government oversight. Markets, however, reacted positively. Lufthansa’s shares rose nearly 2 percent following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the group’s ability to deliver stronger returns. The company stressed that the job reductions will be gradual and spread over five years, easing the transition for employees and giving time to implement retraining or redeployment measures. On the contrary, earlier this year, Lufthansa had announced plans to hire approximately 10,000 new employees throughout 2025. The recruitment drive covered a wide range of roles, including more than 2,000 flight attendants, 1,400 ground operations staff, 1,300 technical experts, 1,200 administrative roles, and around 800 pilot positions. A significant portion of these new jobs was expected to be located in Germany, reflecting Lufthansa’s efforts to strengthen its domestic operations. Among its subsidiaries, Lufthansa Technik alone planned to add over 2,000 staff, while Austrian Airlines and Eurowings each aimed to hire roughly 700 employees. The group reported that in 2024 it had onboarded more than 13,000 new employees and, over a three-year period, had hired over 30,000 staff globally.

Istanbul, Turkey: Turkish Airlines (THY) announced on September 26, 2025, a landmark fleet expansion, planning to acquire up to 225 Boeing aircraft in a deal worth billions of dollars. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to operate an entirely new-generation fleet by 2035. The airline’s board has approved the purchase of 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including 50 firm orders and 25 options for the B787-9 and B787-10 models. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2034, according to a statement filed with Istanbul's Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). Turkish Airlines is also negotiating with Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace for engines, spare parts, and maintenance services for the 787 fleet. Additionally, the airline has finalized discussions with Boeing for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, 100 firm orders and 50 options covering the 737-8 and 737-10 MAX variants. These 737 MAX orders are contingent upon completing engine agreements with CFM International. “Through these acquisitions, our fleet will consist entirely of new-generation aircraft by 2035, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting an estimated 6% annual growth rate,” the airline said. This announcement closely followed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where discussions included energy policies and potential easing of U.S. sanctions to facilitate F-35 fighter jet purchases. “Negotiations with Boeing have been successfully concluded, supporting our strategy to rank among the world’s top five airlines with a fleet of 813 aircraft by 2033. Our nation’s pride, Turkish Airlines, is confidently advancing toward this goal,” said Bilal Ekşi, CEO of Turkish Airlines. The new aircraft will replace older models, improve fuel efficiency, enhance passenger comfort, and support the airline’s sustainability objectives.

Canberra, Australia: In a landmark move, Qantas has launched commercial operations with its first two Airbus A321XLRs, becoming the first airline in the Asia-Pacific region to introduce the model into revenue service. The aircraft, designated “Great Ocean Road” (VH-OGA) and “Outback Way” (VH-OGB), commenced service on 25 September, initially operating the Sydney–Melbourne and Sydney–Perth routes. The names reflect the airline’s tradition of celebrating Australia’s iconic landscapes. Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson noted the scale of preparation required for the launch: “Preparing for these commercial flights has taken an enormous effort, with nearly 350 training flights and more than 40,000 hours of training completed, as well as thousands of pieces of equipment deployed across our network.” Beyond its domestic deployment, the A321XLR’s extended range opens up new possibilities. With a maximum range of approximately 8,700 km, about 3,000 km beyond that of the Boeing 737-800, the aircraft is seen as a bridge between domestic and short-to-medium international flights into Southeast Asia and beyond. Hudson said Qantas plans to roll out the jets on additional domestic and international routes as more units enter service. The two aircraft carry 197 seats in a two-class format 20 in Business and 177 in Economy which amounts to a 13 percent increase in capacity compared to Qantas’s 737-800 fleet (without reducing seat pitch). Notably, the number of Business seats has increased by 66 percent over earlier models. The A321XLRs are powered by Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines. Looking ahead, Qantas expects to receive a third A321XLR in November 2025, bringing the total in service to seven by June 2026. In August 2025. Earlier Qantas placed an order for 20 more A321XLRs, pushing its total commitment to 48 aircraft. These aircraft form a key component in Qantas’s largest-ever fleet renewal program, which totals more than 200 firm orders plus additional purchase options from both Airbus and Boeing.

Schools and businesses shut down, public transport was suspended, and millions of residents were moved to safer locations in Guangdong province to prepare for storm surges and flash floods. The report, based on Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data, compared flight punctuality between May 2024 and April 2025 with pre-pandemic figures from 2019, revealing a widespread decline in on-time departures among the country’s leading carriers. The analysis focused on six major airlines: British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, Tui, and Wizz Air, and measured punctuality as flights departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled times. The results were striking. Tui emerged as the least punctual, with only 59.2% of flights on time compared to 67.2% in 2019. Jet2 and Ryanair also experienced substantial drops, with Jet2’s on-time departures falling from 81.8% to 68%, and Ryanair from 77.8% to 66.5%. Flag carrier British Airways declined from 71.5% to 68.7%, while easyJet slipped from 70.6% to 67.8%. Wizz Air, although slightly affected, maintained 66% punctuality, nearly matching its pre-pandemic performance. The report also highlighted cancellation rates. British Airways recorded the highest cancellations at 2.33%, while Jet2 had the lowest at 0.12%. Despite the drop in punctuality, airlines have generally operated more flights than in 2019. Ryanair, for example, scheduled approximately 162,411 flights in 2024, some 24,000 more than in 2019, placing additional strain on infrastructure and scheduling. Several factors have contributed to the delays. Staff shortages in Air Traffic Control (ATC) remain a significant issue, with Eurocontrol reporting 10–20% fewer controllers than needed in some parts of Europe. While UK ATC provider NATS maintains that it is fully staffed, unions warn of an impending “retirement bulge” among controllers, which could intensify operational pressures. Airspace constraints, driven by geopolitical conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and other regional tensions, have further limited usable routes, creating congestion in available corridors. Additionally, the surge in post-pandemic travel has placed increased demands on airport infrastructure, ground operations, and airline scheduling. Airlines maintain that many delays are beyond their control. Wizz Air and Tui have emphasised that they prioritise minimizing cancellations even if this results in longer wait times for passengers.

It is part of our strategic plan to improve our product consistency and align with passenger demand,” he said. At present, Thai Airways operates a mixed product that includes Economy, Premium Economy, Business (“Royal Silk”), and First Class (“Royal First”) on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The airline intends to streamline this into a three-class offering: Economy, Premium Economy, and an elevated Business Class. The airline will gradually refurbish its wide-body fleet, particularly the Boeing 777-300ERs, to remove First Class suites and replace them with a next-generation Business product. The airline reported a 22 percent year-on-year increase in passenger numbers compared to August 2024. Its load factor reached 91%, up from 89% in the same period last year, reflecting higher seat occupancy across its network. Between January and August 2025, Etihad carried 14.2 million travellers, an 18 percent rise from the same period in 2024. The average load factor for the year so far has remained strong at 88%, positioning the airline among the most efficient operators in the Middle East.
