New Delhi, India: More than 800 flights were delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) after a technical failure disrupted air traffic control systems on Friday, causing widespread operational chaos at one of the world’s busiest airports. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed that a malfunction occurred in the airport’s Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) , a critical platform that generates and distributes flight plans to controllers and pilots. The failure forced the ATC to manually process flight plans, drastically slowing departures through Friday. “The system developed a technical issue late Thursday evening, leading to temporary delays in flight departures,” the AAI said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest.” According to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, over 800 flights experienced delays, with more than 175 departures affected on Friday morning alone. The average delay was around 55 minutes, but several international routes were held back much longer. Domestic carriers, including IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India, reported schedule disruptions. IndiGo’s shares dropped 1.5 % in response. An ITA Airways flight to Rome was delayed by nearly two hours, while a Virgin Atlantic service to London took off more than an hour behind schedule. While the AAI has not confirmed the root cause, officials said preliminary checks are underway to determine whether the issue was linked to a possible malware intrusion. A senior aviation ministry source told Reuters that “cybersecurity experts are reviewing the system logs for any signs of tampering or external interference.” Delhi’s IGIA, managed by GMR Airports Limited and overseen by the AAI, handled 78 million passengers in 2024, ranking as the ninth-busiest airport globally according to Airports Council International. AAI technicians and software vendors were still working late Friday to fully restore the AMSS. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been briefed and is monitoring the situation for compliance and safety implications. No cancellations were officially reported, but passengers experienced long queues, rescheduling, and confusion as airlines adjusted flight plans.

Mumbai, India: On October 8, 2025, the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) was inaugurated, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation sector. Built at a cost of around Rs 19,650 crore under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group, the airport is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and enhance the city’s position as a global aviation hub. Phase 1 of NMIA features Terminal 1 and Runway 1, equipped with 10 bus gates and 29 aero bridges. The facility is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 90 million in future phases. Its lotus-inspired architecture includes 12 sculptural columns resembling petals and 17 mega columns supporting the roof, reflecting India’s cultural heritage. Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, about 37 kilometers from South Mumbai, NMIA is integrated with multimodal transport options, including metro, roadways, and public transport systems, ensuring seamless connectivity. The airport also hosts India’s largest aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, positioning it as a major cargo and logistics hub. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the inauguration ceremony, alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, highlighting the national importance of the project. Chief Minister Fadnavis announced that the first ticket issued from the airport would bear the name of the late D.B. Patil, a prominent farmer leader and legislator. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has issued a consultation paper proposing to link airport tariffs including user development fees (UDF) with measurable service quality standards. The draft framework applies to airports handling more than 3.5 million passengers annually. It sets benchmarks for maximum wait times at terminal entry points, check-in counters, security screening, immigration desks, and baggage belts. Failure to meet these standards could result in reduced tariffs, while airports exceeding them may receive incentives. AERA’s proposal also focuses on the upkeep of basic passenger facilities, including clean washrooms, seating, and trolleys. Adoption of technology, such as Digi Yatra and immigration e-gates, is part of the criteria aimed at improving efficiency and passenger experience. “Introducing a structured service quality framework will ensure passengers receive consistent and improved service levels across major airports,” AERA said in the consultation paper. Independent third-party audits will be carried out to verify compliance, and performance data will be published to maintain transparency. Airports handling over six million passengers annually will be placed in a separate category, recognizing their higher traffic volumes and operational complexity. This marks the highest quarterly passenger total on record, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and contributing to a total of 141 million travelers in the first half of the year, a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The surge in passenger numbers is attributed to a combination of factors, including pent-up demand for travel, increased consumer confidence, and the easing of global travel restrictions. Europe remained the most popular international region for UK travelers, with destinations such as Dublin, Amsterdam, Palma de Mallorca, and Alicante seeing significant traffic. Notably, airports in the north of England, including Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, and Leeds Bradford, collectively welcomed nearly 750,000 additional passengers, highlighting the regional strength of the aviation sector. A major highlight of the analysis involves non-aeronautical revenue streams which include retail, food and beverage, duty-free shopping, parking, advertising, and real estate leasing. Airports operating under the public–private partnership (PPP) model are pivotal: while they handle 64% of India’s total air traffic, they generate a dominant 87% of the nation’s non-aero revenue. The report also spotlights the performance of India’s busiest airports, Mumbai Airport earns approximately USD 20.1 per passenger from non-aero sources. Poland, Europe: Poland’s Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) , one of Europe’s most ambitious transport infrastructure projects, has reached a major milestone with the official approval of its passenger terminal design, moving the €30–32.5 billion development closer to construction. The government-backed mega hub is projected to handle up to 44 million passengers annually by 2032, with integrated high-speed rail links designed to transform regional and international connectivity. According to the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny company, the terminal and underground railway station design, developed by Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, has been formally handed over and accepted. The documentation is now being prepared for submission to regional authorities to obtain building permits. The facility will span approximately 450,000 square meters, making it nearly three times the size of Warsaw Chopin Airport’s terminal. The three-level terminal layout will place check-in facilities and Schengen departures on the top level (+2), non-Schengen arrivals and transfer areas on level +1, and baggage reclaim alongside bus connections on the ground level. Initial capacity is set at 34 million passengers per year, with expansion potential to 44 million. The design also includes up to 67 aircraft stands, 140 check-in desks, and the ability to process up to 11,000 passengers per hour. The construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, starting with deep foundation works. The underground railway station and connecting tunnel are targeted for completion by 2029, with the entire airport planned to become operational by the end of 2032. A general contractor tender is currently open, while other tenders including for the baggage handling system are already in progress. The company anticipates awarding contracts worth nearly PLN 30 billion by the end of 2025. With an estimated total cost exceeding €30 billion, CPK is positioned as a direct competitor to hubs such as London Heathrow and Dubai International. The mega hub will integrate aviation, high-speed rail, and road networks, with almost 2,000 kilometers of new high-speed lines planned. These will link major Polish cities and connect to the EU’s TEN-T corridors, including the strategic Rail Baltica route to the Baltic states. The Polish government under Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed in June 2024 that the CPK project would proceed, albeit with adjustments to ensure it complements rather than entirely replaces existing airports in Warsaw. New Delhi, India: All airports across India have been placed on high alert following a directive issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in response to intelligence inputs warning of a possible terror attack. The advisory, issued to all airport operators, calls for maximum vigilance from September 22 to October 2 and includes all airports, airstrips, helipads, flight schools, training institutes and other civil aviation installations across the country. The alert is based on intelligence suggesting a possible threat originating from a Pakistani-based terror group. The BCAS circular instructs airport operators to implement heightened security protocols, including intensified passenger screening, strict ID verification of staff and vendors, continuous CCTV monitoring, and increased patrolling of sensitive airport zones such as parking areas and terminal entry points. The advisory is part of routine precautionary measures often issued around national holidays or major events. Such alerts are typically seen during Independence Day, Republic Day, and large-scale religious festivals like Durga Puja. This represents a 2.3% increase compared to H1 2024, despite short‑term operational disruptions linked to regional airspace restrictions in May and June In Q2 alone, DXB handled 22.5 million passengers, a 3.1% year-on-year rise, with April registering a record 8 million travellers, the busiest April on record. January 2025 remains the busiest month ever with 8.5 million guest movements. Average traffic during H1 stood at 7.7 million passengers per month, or approximately 254,000 per day The airport maintained robust service quality amid high throughput, 222,000 flights were handled, with a 76% load factor, while 41.8 million bags were processed 91% delivered within 45 minutes. The mishandled baggage rate was only 2 per 1,000 passengers, well below global norms. Passenger processing times exceeded standard benchmarks: the vast majority cleared departure passport control in under 10 minutes, security in fewer than five minutes, and arrivals within 15 minutes. DXB also surpassed one million tonnes of cargo handled during H1 2025 a modest rise of 0.1% year-on-year while offering flights to 269 destinations across more than 107 countries, served by 92 carriers DXB is on track to handle 96 million passengers in 2025, closing in on the symbolic 100 million annual milestone expected in 2026. Over the longer term, Dubai’s aviation strategy focuses on expanding capacity at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), a key component of Dubai’s $35 billion aviation investment programme. Once complete, DWC will feature five runways, 400 aircraft stands, and capacity for 260 million passengers annually, making it the largest airport globally by capacity. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths stated that the airport’s growth “highlights the strength of Dubai and the UAE, the agility of our operations, and the commitment of our airport community.” He added that the scale achieved during regional challenges reflects DXB’s operational maturity and its strategic importance as a global aviation hub. He reaffirmed that annual traffic is expected to reach 96 million in 2025, moving closer to the 100 million milestone, especially given the ramp-up toward winter events such as Dubai Airshow 2025.
