Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Emirates has announced measurable progress in reducing incidents of unexpected severe turbulence across its global operations through a combination of advanced data-sharing, artificial intelligence, and real-time weather intelligence platforms. The airline said its multi-layered approach developed over the past year has already led to a “significant reduction” in severe turbulence events encountered unexpectedly by its flight crews. The initiatives are designed to enhance passenger comfort and operational safety amid a rise in clear-air turbulence worldwide. According to the carrier’s media release, Emirates has integrated three core systems into its flight operations ecosystem: SkyPath, Lido mPilot, and IATA’s Turbulence Aware platform. SkyPath, a predictive turbulence-detection technology, uses sensor and accelerometer data from aircraft systems and even onboard iPads to identify and report turbulence in real time. The system analyses eddy dissipation rate (EDR) data and combines it with ADS-B signals to improve predictive accuracy. Lido mPilot, developed by Lufthansa Systems, provides Emirates pilots with live graphical overlays of turbulence, weather fronts, and convection zones within their Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications. It allows crews to visualise risk areas instantly and adjust routing decisions while airborne. Meanwhile, Emirates’ participation in the IATA Turbulence Aware programme enables it to contribute to and benefit from a shared, industry-wide database of global turbulence reports. The programme pools anonymised flight data from multiple airlines to create real-time turbulence maps accessible to participating carriers. “While turbulence can never be entirely eliminated, Emirates’ adoption of these predictive and collaborative systems is aimed at minimising exposure to unexpected severe events,” the airline said in its statement. The airline said it will continue refining its predictive systems as part of a wider strategy to use artificial intelligence and data analytics in operational decision-making. The next phase involves deeper integration of real-time turbulence data into dispatch planning and automated weather model calibration. Emirates’ Chief Operations Officer, Adel Al Redha, said the initiative underscores the airline’s commitment to technological innovation and passenger safety. “We are investing in solutions that use the best of science, data, and collaboration to make every flight smoother and safer,” he said.

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado on October 28, alleges that United neglected to act despite being alerted that a company pilot had engaged in criminal behavior involving the non-consensual sharing of explicit photos and videos of his ex-girlfriend, a United flight attendant. According to court filings, the plaintiff identified as Lisa Denson began working for United in 2015 and met Andrew Hill, a first officer at the airline, the following year. The lawsuit claims Hill coerced her into sending explicit photos and videos during their relationship and secretly recorded her on multiple occasions, including in uniform and during layovers. After their breakup, Hill allegedly uploaded those images to pornographic websites and shared them across social media platforms without her consent. Hill later pleaded guilty in 2024 to multiple felony counts, including distribution of intimate images, stalking, and online impersonation. Despite an active police investigation and a search warrant served to United in April 2024, the airline did not suspend or terminate Hill until his arrest three months later, the complaint alleges. “The company’s inaction enabled continued harm to Ms. Denson, despite clear evidence of ongoing criminal conduct by a uniformed employee,” the lawsuit states. Independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie described the rebound as “delayed but now very strong,” emphasizing that Asia-Pacific’s recovery trailed behind other global markets due to prolonged travel restrictions and uneven reopening policies. However, once borders reopened, pent-up demand for air travel surged, supported by economic resilience and a growing middle-class population. “The younger population and the expanding middle class are fundamental drivers of aviation growth in this region,” Sobie said. “These demographic factors are creating long-term, sustainable demand for air travel.” Domestic travel has been the engine behind the region’s growth. The authority has directed the airline to undertake corrective action after identifying “systemic failures” across multiple operational domains. The DGCA’s findings point to irregularities in Akasa Air’s flight safety systems, crew duty-time compliance, and internal safety audits. The regulator reportedly observed repetitive procedural lapses and documentation gaps, including delayed closure of internal audit findings and incomplete reviews of cockpit voice and flight data recorder (CVR/FDR) analyses. The regulator also highlighted discrepancies in the alignment of Akasa Air’s Safety Management System (SMS) manual with departmental manuals governing flight operations and engineering. In addition, not all employees had completed mandatory fatigue management training, which forms a critical component of the DGCA’s flight safety oversight framework. New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed Air India to carry out a comprehensive inspection of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) systems across its entire fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. This action comes after an incident in which the RAT deployed automatically on one of the airline’s aircraft during landing in Birmingham, UK. Boeing has also requested that other 787 operators report any similar occurrences worldwide. The DGCA has specifically instructed Air India to verify the stowage integrity of the RAT in all aircraft where the Power Conditioning Module (PCM) was recently replaced. The Ram Air Turbine serves as an emergency backup system, providing hydraulic and electrical power if the aircraft’s main engines fail. It operates by using the aircraft’s forward motion to spin a small turbine that extends from the fuselage underside. This ensures critical flight control systems and avionics remain operational during emergencies, such as dual-engine failures or complete electrical system loss. Notably, the RAT deployed during the June 2025 crash of Air India flight AI171 after a dual-engine flameout at Ahmedabad, resulting in the loss of 260 lives. The recent directive stems from an October 4, 2025, incident involving Air India flight AI117, flying from Amritsar (ATQ) to Birmingham (BHX), where the RAT deployed automatically at around 500 feet during descent. The aircraft landed safely, with all electrical and hydraulic systems reportedly functioning normally. According to the DGCA advisory, “Air India has been advised to review the work package of ‘D’ Check for the actions required in view of the change of PCM module, for any discrepancies.” The regulator noted that the RAT is rarely activated during routine operations and is typically reserved for critical failures, making any uncommanded deployment a serious concern. Air India confirmed that despite the unexpected RAT deployment, all onboard systems were stable throughout the flight. Following the incident, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) requested the DGCA to inspect the electrical systems on all Boeing 787s operating in India. In a letter, FIP President GS Randhawa highlighted that the Aircraft Health Monitoring (AHM) system had detected a fault in the Bus Power Control Unit (BPCU), which could have triggered the RAT deployment. The BPCU is essential for managing electrical power distribution, and any malfunction may activate backup systems. FIP emphasized that this incident points to potential systemic electrical vulnerabilities in the Boeing 787 and called for thorough inspections of all aircraft in the country. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated, “The DGCA is already on the job.
