New Delhi, India: The GST Council on September 3, 2025, announced a revised two-tier GST structure, set to come into effect from September 22, 2025, impacting air travel and luxury services. Under the new system, most goods and services will attract either 5% or 18% GST, while select luxury and “sin” items will be taxed at 40%. For air travel, the changes are as follows: Economy class tickets: Continue at 5% GST, unchanged from previous rates. Premium economy, business, and first-class tickets: Previously taxed at 12% GST, these fares will now attract 18% GST, increasing the cost for premium travelers. For example, a business class ticket booked on September 4, 2025, for travel on September 24, 2025, will attract the old 12% GST, while the same ticket booked on or after September 23, 2025, will incur the new 18% GST. The Finance Ministry clarified under Section 14(a)(i) of the CGST Act, 2017, that GST liability is determined by the time of supply: If goods or services are supplied before the rate change but invoiced afterward, GST depends on the time of supply. Payment after the rate change: time of supply is the earlier of the invoice date or payment receipt date. Payment before the rate change: time of supply is the payment receipt date. The GST on private jets, helicopters, yachts, and pleasure vessels has increased from an effective 31% (28% GST + 3% cess) to a flat 40% GST, eliminating the cess and raising costs for high-end travelers and operators. According to PTI, The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expressed disappointment over the increase in GST on non-economy travel. “Aviation has significant potential to boost India’s economy, both through airline growth and improved connectivity. It is therefore disappointing to increase GST on non-economy travel without clear justification,” said Sheldon Hee, IATA’s Asia Pacific regional vice-president. He added that the tax on premium travel has more than doubled since 2017 and warned that such increases could dampen demand and affect airline profitability, especially since premium travelers often determine a route’s viability. Airlines are expected to pass on the higher GST to passengers, making premium tickets more expensive. Meanwhile, economy travelers benefit from stable fares, with GST unchanged at 5%. The revised structure aims to simplify taxation while ensuring that revenue from luxury and non-essential services contributes to public finances.

Minnesota, United States: In a tragic aviation accident Saturday afternoon, a Robinson R66 helicopter crashed and ignited near Lakeville roughly 25 miles south of Minneapolis resulting in the deaths of all individuals aboard. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated a detailed investigation. The helicopter, a five-seat single-engine turbine Robinson R66, went down at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time in a remote, non-commercial area near Highview Avenue and 219th Street West, just west of Airlake Airport. Upon impact, the aircraft burst into flames. Authorities confirmed no one on the ground was harmed. First responders, including Lakeville police and fire units, located the wreckage and determined there were no survivors. FAA officials informed People that two people were on board at the time of the crash. The identities of the deceased remain undisclosed as the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office is handling victim identification and next-of-kin notification. The NTSB is leading the investigation, working in collaboration with the FAA to determine the cause of the crash. Investigators will examine flight tracking data, weather conditions, pilot history, aircraft maintenance records, air traffic control communications, and other relevant evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events. An NTSB investigator was expected to arrive at the scene on Sunday to document the wreckage, gather evidence, and move the helicopter for further examination.

Lakeville Helicopter Crash Kills Two, Bursts Into Flames, FAA & NTSB Investigating

Colorado, United States: Two people tragically lost their lives early Friday morning when a small plane crashed just southeast of Centennial Airport in Colorado. The aircraft involved was a Beechcraft BE35, which went down around 6:20–6:25 a.m. in a business park near 8636 South Peoria Street, according to South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The first reports described an explosion, and by the time emergency responders arrived, the plane was engulfed in flames near a bank of diesel-powered generators that were also at risk of igniting. SMFR spokesperson Brian Willie confirmed firefighters were able to douse the fire before it spread to nearby buildings or equipment. Thankfully, no one on the ground was injured. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will identify the victims once families have been notified. Air traffic control recordings captured by LiveATC.net shed light on the final moments before the crash. The pilot was cleared for takeoff and informed to line up on runway 17R for touch-and-goes. Soon after, another pilot in the area radioed, “Tower, there’s smoke off the left side looks like he went down.”Seconds later, someone added: “Appears he crashed in a parking lot about a mile southeast of the field.” ATC immediately alerted emergency crews. The FAA and NTSB have launched an investigation, with the NTSB taking the lead. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the event or who might have video footage from nearby businesses to email eyewitness@ntsb.gov. Operations at Centennial Airport were not disrupted, as the crash occurred off airport property. This marks the second fatal aviation accident in the Denver metropolitan area in under a week. Passenger numbers are projected to escalate from 412 million in FY25 to 600 million by FY30. According to the report, this substantial jump will drive a sharp increase in aeronautical revenues, driven by both higher passenger counts and enhanced spending per traveler. A major highlight of the analysis involves non-aeronautical revenue streams which include retail, food and beverage, duty-free shopping, parking, advertising, and real estate leasing. Airports operating under the public–private partnership (PPP) model are pivotal: while they handle 64% of India’s total air traffic, they generate a dominant 87% of the nation’s non-aero revenue. The report also spotlights the performance of India’s busiest airports, Mumbai Airport earns approximately USD 20.1 per passenger from non-aero sources. Delhi Airport closely trails with about USD 18.1 per passenger. These numbers are impressively close to global aviation giants like London Heathrow (USD 21.6) and Tokyo Haneda (USD 19.9). Knight Frank's analysis emphasizes that India’s airports are now at a strategic crossroads. With passenger volumes expected to soar to 600 million by FY30, financial sustainability will increasingly depend on diverse revenue models. The report urges airport developers and operators to move beyond traditional infrastructure approaches and adopt the concept of aerocities integrated commercial hubs encompassing retail, hospitality, leasing, and other services turning airports into urban growth engines, not just transit points. The projected surge in air travel offers both significant opportunities and challenges. Operators must balance capacity expansion with revenue diversification to ensure long-term resilience as passenger numbers climb.

India’s Air Passenger Traffic Expected to Reach 600M Annually by FY30, Says Report

Auckland, New Zealand: Air New Zealand’s Auckland–Perth service faced a significant disruption on Wednesday after Flight NZ175 was forced to return to Auckland approximately one hour into its journey due to a technical concern detected in-flight. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner departed Auckland at around 12:35 PM local time and was en route to Perth when the flight crew made the decision to divert back as a precautionary measure. The aircraft landed safely in Auckland without incident. “The aircraft returned to Auckland so that our engineers can investigate and rectify the issue before the aircraft resumes service,” Air New Zealand said in a statement quoted by NZ Herald. The airline emphasised that the diversion was conducted in line with international aviation safety standards. As a result of the unscheduled return, the return leg Flight NZ176 from Perth to Auckland was cancelled. Air New Zealand confirmed that affected passengers are being rebooked on later services and provided with necessary assistance to minimise disruption. The airline has not disclosed the exact nature of the technical fault but stated that engineers at its Auckland maintenance base are currently inspecting the aircraft. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew during the incident. Air New Zealand has not yet announced when the aircraft will resume service or whether further cancellations might follow. Montreal, Canada: The International Air Transport Association (IATA), representing approximately 350 airlines worldwide, including major Indian carriers like Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, has proposed increasing the mandatory retirement age for commercial pilots operating multi-pilot flights from 65 to 67 years. This recommendation has been submitted to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) ahead of its 42nd Assembly in September 2025. IATA's proposal comes in response to the escalating global demand for air travel, which has outpaced the supply of qualified pilots. The aviation industry has experienced significant growth, leading to a shortage of available pilots. In response, IATA suggests that raising the upper age limit for pilots would help mitigate this issue. IATA emphasizes that increasing the retirement age to 67 is a "cautious but reasonable step consistent with safety." The organization highlights that in countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, there are no upper age limits for pilots, including those undertaking commercial air transport operations. The proposal also aligns with ICAO's initiatives to develop more integrated systems of medical assessment. IATA advocates for standardized medical risk assessment and oversight systems, informed by a consistent set of pilot medical data, to reliably assess the medical risks associated with pilot age. This approach aims to ensure the safe implementation of changes to pilot age limits. In addition, IATA noted that raising Commercial Air Transport (CAT) pilot age limits to allow more pilots to continue working aligns with 15 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This includes the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Programme, which aims to ensure a sufficient supply of qualified aviation professionals for the future whether by recruiting older candidates or retaining existing pilots.

IATA Proposes Raising Pilot Retirement Age to 67 to Address Global Pilot Shortage

Idaho, United States: A tragic plane crash in Wyoming’s Bighorn National Forest on Labor Day left one child dead and three members of the Palmer family hospitalized. Authorities said the family had just taken off in a four-seat Piper PA-28 on Monday afternoon when the plane went down in the mountains shortly before 5 p.m. Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 13-year-old Amelia Palmer died at the scene. Her parents, Earl Palmer, 54, and Cindy Palmer, 53, were airlifted in critical condition to a trauma center in Billings, Montana. Their 11-year-old son, Aeron Palmer, suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Sheridan Memorial Hospital. The Sheriff’s Office initially received reports of a missing or injured person in the Bighorn Mountains before learning of the plane crash. Emergency responders quickly located the wreckage and worked to stabilize the three survivors. Piper PA-28 Crash in Wyoming Claims 13-Year-Old’s Life, Leaves Three Hospitalized

New Delhi, India: India’s Civil Aviation Ministry now plans to relaunch seaplane operations across at least two domestic routes by October, confirmed Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. Speaking at the Eastern Region Civil Aviation Ministers’ Conference, Minister Naidu noted that while seaplane operations were previously limited to a single route, the government has now simplified the guidelines to ease relaunch efforts These relaxed norms cover the setup of waterdromes, pilot training procedures, and operational regulations. Under the new rules, seaplanes can be deployed on any water body with a minimum depth of five feet and at least 200 meters of landing space. The anticipated routes include locations across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Kerala, or Andhra Pradesh, with the potential for future extensions to Odisha’s Chilika Lake and other parts of the eastern coastline. Minister Naidu encouraged airline operators to seize this opportunity, highlighting its “huge potential” for improving connectivity. He also invited state governments to propose innovative locations to expand the seaplane network. India's seaplane services were initially launched in October 2020 by SpiceJet's subsidiary, Spice Shuttle, with a 15-seater Twin Otter 300 aircraft operating between Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Riverfront and the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat. The service aimed to enhance regional connectivity under the UDAN scheme, offering affordable travel options to remote destinations. The pandemic disrupted operations, and the airline faced challenges in procuring its own fleet of seaplanes. By April 2021, SpiceJet decided to discontinue the service, citing these operational reasons. Additionally, Naidu pointed out the growing demand for pilots, revealing that 1,700 aircraft are currently on order, each requiring between 20 to 30 trained pilots. India to Revive Seaplane Services with Fresh Routes and Relaxed Norms from October

Bangkok, Thailand: The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has suspended Nok Air’s international flight operations and barred the airline from expanding its route network, citing non-compliance with safety regulations. Nok Air has been without international service since the 2024–2025 winter season. Earlier this year, the airline had submitted an advance winter timetable planning to recommence daily flights to Nanning, Nanjing, and Zhengzhou in China, as well as Hyderabad in India, starting 27 October 2025, extending through the winter schedule. However, this plan was derailed by a CAAT decision on 28 August 2025. The agency cited a troubling series of safety incidents including engine shut-downs mid-air, hard landings, and runway excursions occurring between 2023 and 2025. Reports from outlets such as The Nation and Bangkok Post indicate CAAT is also concerned by a wave of staff resignations including pilots, instructors, and safety inspectors that may threaten the airline’s safety oversight and institutional experience. This intervention comes just ahead of an ICAO audit of Thailand's aviation safety framework, scheduled from 27 August to 8 September 2025. The CAAT's move is viewed as aimed at enforcing compliance with international standards. Meanwhile, Nok Air’s CEO has stated that the airline had already voluntarily ceased international services in June 2025 during the low travel season, and emphasized that domestic operations continue unchanged under CAAT supervision. The CAAT suspension remains in effect until Nok Air can demonstrate corrective safety measures; reports say the authority has allowed just one week for the airline to submit remedial plans.
