Hong Kong, China: Super Typhoon Ragasa, one of the strongest storms of 2025, has triggered widespread shutdowns across southern China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, forcing mass evacuations and bringing air travel to a standstill. The storm, also called Typhoon Nando in the Philippines, first struck the country’s northern provinces, leaving behind fatalities, flooding, and structural damage. It has since barreled toward Taiwan before sweeping into the Pearl River Delta region, where Hong Kong and Guangdong authorities raised the No. 8 storm signal. Schools and businesses shut down, public transport was suspended, and millions of residents were moved to safer locations in Guangdong province to prepare for storm surges and flash floods. At Hong Kong International Airport, more than 700 flights have been cancelled since Tuesday evening. The suspension began at 6:00 p.m. on September 23 and is set to last until at least 6:00 a.m. on September 25, affecting nearly all passenger and cargo operations. Cathay Pacific has grounded over 500 flights during this window, including several long-haul services such as Zurich (CX383), Los Angeles (CX880), and New York–JFK (CX844). The airline has waived change and refund fees, promising automatic rebooking for affected travelers. Emirates has suspended all flights between Dubai and Hong Kong until Thursday and cancelled services to Shenzhen, along with shuttle connections between Hong Kong and Bangkok. Qatar Airways has cancelled passenger flights between Doha and Hong Kong, including services QR816, QR815, QR817, and QR818. Its cargo operations to Hong Kong, Macau, and Shenzhen have also been halted Other global carriers including Qantas, British Airways, and Singapore Airlines have also suspended flights to the city until conditions improve Budget airlines such as HK Express, Hong Kong Airlines, and Greater Bay Airlines have also cancelled dozens of flights, while carriers repositioned aircraft to safer airports to avoid storm damage. Cathay Pacific and other airlines have issued special ticketing guidelines, allowing flexible rebooking, refunds, and rerouting through partner carriers. Passengers are strongly urged not to travel to the airport unless their airline has confirmed their flight is operating. With winds exceeding 200 km/h, Ragasa remains a significant threat as it moves further inland, with authorities warning of landslides, storm surges, and power outages in southern China.

Varanasi, India: A Bengaluru–Varanasi Air India Express flight sparked a major security scare on Monday after a passenger allegedly attempted to access the cockpit mid-air, prompting the crew and security agencies to take swift action. The incident occurred on Flight IX-1086, which departed Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru at around 8:00 am and landed safely at Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport shortly after 10:25 am. According to initial reports, a male passenger approached the cockpit door while apparently searching for the lavatory. Eyewitnesses told investigators that he tried operating the cockpit entry mechanism, which is controlled by a keypad and passcode system. Although early reports suggested the individual may have entered the correct code, sources told The Indian Express that the attempt was unsuccessful and the cockpit door remained secure. The captain, alerted to the unusual activity, immediately blocked access and reinforced cockpit security measures. Cabin crew quickly escorted the passenger away from the cockpit area, following standard aviation safety procedures. On landing in Varanasi, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detained not only the passenger but also eight individuals traveling with him. The group of nine was handed over to Phulpur police for further questioning to determine intent and establish whether the act was accidental or deliberate. Air India Express confirmed the incident but stressed that flight safety and security protocols were never compromised. “Our crew acted promptly in line with standard operating procedures, and the cockpit remained secure throughout,” the airline said in a statement. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified, and officials are assessing whether the incident qualifies as “Level-3 unruly behaviour,” the highest category under India’s Civil Aviation Requirements. Such classification could result in strict penalties, including the possibility of the passenger being placed on a no-fly list.

The report, based on Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data, compared flight punctuality between May 2024 and April 2025 with pre-pandemic figures from 2019, revealing a widespread decline in on-time departures among the country’s leading carriers. The analysis focused on six major airlines: British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, Tui, and Wizz Air, and measured punctuality as flights departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled times. The results were striking. Tui emerged as the least punctual, with only 59.2% of flights on time compared to 67.2% in 2019. Jet2 and Ryanair also experienced substantial drops, with Jet2’s on-time departures falling from 81.8% to 68%, and Ryanair from 77.8% to 66.5%. Flag carrier British Airways declined from 71.5% to 68.7%, while easyJet slipped from 70.6% to 67.8%. Wizz Air, although slightly affected, maintained 66% punctuality, nearly matching its pre-pandemic performance. The report also highlighted cancellation rates. British Airways recorded the highest cancellations at 2.33%, while Jet2 had the lowest at 0.12%. Despite the drop in punctuality, airlines have generally operated more flights than in 2019. Ryanair, for example, scheduled approximately 162,411 flights in 2024, some 24,000 more than in 2019, placing additional strain on infrastructure and scheduling. Several factors have contributed to the delays. Staff shortages in Air Traffic Control (ATC) remain a significant issue, with Eurocontrol reporting 10–20% fewer controllers than needed in some parts of Europe. While UK ATC provider NATS maintains that it is fully staffed, unions warn of an impending “retirement bulge” among controllers, which could intensify operational pressures. Airspace constraints, driven by geopolitical conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and other regional tensions, have further limited usable routes, creating congestion in available corridors. Additionally, the surge in post-pandemic travel has placed increased demands on airport infrastructure, ground operations, and airline scheduling. Airlines maintain that many delays are beyond their control. Wizz Air and Tui have emphasised that they prioritise minimizing cancellations even if this results in longer wait times for passengers.

Currently, Air India Express operates a fleet of 115 aircraft, offering over 500 daily flights to 41 domestic and 17 international destinations, including key markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. The airline has recently launched daily direct flights between Bengaluru and Bangkok starting October 18, 2025, enhancing connectivity during the festive season. According to eyewitness accounts cited by Paddle Your Own Kanoo, panic spread through the cabin shortly before takeoff as passengers received news updates about the policy. Many expressed fears that the new rule could prevent them from re-entering the United States. Chennai, India: An IndiGo flight traveling from Mumbai to Phuket was forced to make an emergency landing in Chennai on Thursday following a bomb scare, authorities confirmed. The Airbus A320 aircraft, operating flight 6E 1089, was carrying 176 passengers and six crew members when the threat was identified mid-air. The flight departed Mumbai at 3:33 PM and was over the Bay of Bengal when the crew was alerted to a possible explosive device in the aircraft's lavatory. The pilot promptly diverted the aircraft to Chennai, ensuring a safe landing at 7:20 PM local time. Passengers were safely deboarded and moved to the airport lounge as security procedures were initiated. Following the landing, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployed its bomb disposal unit along with sniffer dogs to thoroughly inspect the aircraft. The investigation revealed that the threat was a hoax. Officials continue to investigate the origin of the threatening email and are working to identify the individual responsible. Due to a night curfew at Phuket airport, the flight’s onward journey was postponed until later in the evening. IndiGo assured passengers that efforts were being made to minimize inconvenience, including providing refreshments and continuous updates throughout the delay. Months ago, on April 8 2025 an IndiGo flight operating from Jaipur to Mumbai was forced to make an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday evening after a bomb threat note was discovered onboard. The aircraft, flight 6E 5324, was carrying 225 passengers and landed safely at approximately 8:50 p.m. Once the plane landed, it was promptly guided to a remote bay for a comprehensive security sweep. Passengers were then safely disembarked under the careful supervision of security personnel.

Vishakhapatnam, India: An Air India Express flight bound for Hyderabad was forced to make an emergency landing at Visakhapatnam (Vizag) airport on Thursday afternoon after a suspected bird strike caused engine trouble shortly after takeoff. Flight IX 2658, operated by Air India Express, departed Vizag around 2:38 PM with 103 passengers onboard. About 10 nautical miles into its climb, the pilots detected abnormal vibrations in one of the engines and suspected a bird strike. Following standard safety protocols, the commander immediately contacted Air Traffic Control and requested clearance to return. The aircraft made a precautionary landing back at Visakhapatnam airport at approximately 3:00 PM. Emergency services were placed on standby, but the landing was completed without incident. All passengers were safely deboarded, and no injuries were reported. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed of the incident, and engineers are carrying out a detailed inspection to confirm the extent of the damage and verify whether a bird strike was indeed the cause of the engine trouble. Air India Express released a statement assuring that passenger safety was never compromised. The airline confirmed that alternative arrangements, including rebooking on later flights and refund options, were being provided to affected passengers. The flight, however, has been cancelled pending safety clearance of the aircraft.

In Russia, Marina Raskova emerged as a legendary pilot during World War II, helping form the all-female combat regiments known as the “Night Witches.” Sarla Thukral became the first Indian woman to earn a pilot’s license in 1936 at the age of 21. She trained on a Gypsy Moth aircraft and paved the way for others, including Prem Mathur, who in 1951 became the first woman to fly a commercial aircraft in India. These pioneers laid the foundation for today’s progress, where India now has one of the highest proportions of female pilots globally, far surpassing the world average. Despite these advances, technical and leadership roles in aviation such as aircraft maintenance engineering, ground operations, and senior management have long been male-dominated. Today, however, new milestones in India and Malaysia are demonstrating how women are reshaping every aspect of the aviation industry. India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has inducted its first-ever all-women batch of aircraft maintenance engineers (AMEs). On September 15, 2025, the airline welcomed 33 women technicians who completed a week-long induction program featuring mentoring sessions by senior leaders and female engineers. The initiative reflects IndiGo’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), focusing on placing women in technical and leadership roles beyond traditional cabin crew or customer service positions. IndiGo’s workforce already demonstrates significant female representation, with women making up 44.8% of its employees. The airline employs 791 female pilots, accounting for 15.28% of its total pilot cadre well above the global average of about 5%, according to the International Society of Women Airline Pilots. The airline also posted an impressive Technical Dispatch Reliability of 99.89% in FY25, underlining that diversity initiatives are aligned with operational excellence. This move is particularly significant in India, where aviation is growing rapidly and skilled engineers are in high demand. By positioning women in maintenance and technical operations, IndiGo is not only addressing workforce gaps but also challenging long-standing gender stereotypes in aviation engineering. Just days later, on September 18, 2025, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) made headlines by operating its first all-women flight, MH2610, from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu. The flight was staffed entirely by women across every touchpoint: cockpit crew, cabin attendants, engineers, ground handlers, security, and check-in staff. As reported by Bernama, Malaysia Airlines emphasized that women currently make up 36% of the Malaysia Aviation Group’s workforce, exceeding the IATA 25by2025 initiative target, which calls for at least 25% female representation in aviation leadership roles by 2025. The airline described the all-women flight as a symbolic milestone aimed at inspiring women in the industry and young aspirants considering aviation careers. MAS stated that the initiative demonstrates “the sky has no limits” when it comes to women’s capabilities in aviation. Both IndiGo’s engineering initiative and MAS’s symbolic flight highlight the changing face of aviation, especially in Asia. Traditionally, women in aviation were most visible as cabin crew, while technical and command positions remained male-dominated. But these initiatives show women stepping into areas once considered inaccessible: maintenance hangars, cockpits, engineering bays, and executive offices. Globally, airlines and regulators have struggled to increase women’s representation in aviation. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) launched 25by2025 to push for more female leaders, yet progress remains uneven. The U.S., for instance, has less than 6% female pilots, and Europe records similar figures. India, however, is an outlier. North Carolina, United States: A small private plane crashed in a field near Iotla Valley Elementary School in Macon County on Thursday afternoon, killing all three people on board. Authorities have confirmed that the deceased include award-winning Nashville songwriter Brett James, 57. The Cirrus SR22T aircraft (tail number N218VB) went down shortly after 3 p.m. local time on September 18, just west of the school grounds in Franklin. The aircraft is registered to James and had departed from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville, Tennessee, earlier that day, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Macon County Sheriff’s Office and local media reports confirmed the fatalities. Songwriter Brett James, whose career spanned more than two decades, was among those killed. He was known for penning hits including “Jesus, Take the Wheel” (Carrie Underwood) and “When the Sun Goes Down” (Kenny Chesney). James’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Nashville music community, where he was regarded as one of the most versatile and prolific writers of his generation. His songs, often blending country and pop influences, earned him Grammy Awards and recognition from both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. The identities of the two other victims have not yet been officially released.
