Chennai, India: An Air India flight Airbus 320 operating from Colombo to Chennai was forced to undergo a post-landing inspection on Tuesday after a suspected bird strike during its approach. The Airbus aircraft, carrying 158 passengers, landed safely at Chennai International Airport with no reported injuries. The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo. Air India, in a statement, said that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

The plane safely landed back at Heathrow around 10:35 AM local time, roughly 1 hour and 35 minutes after takeoff. Emergency ground services were ready as a precaution. Passengers were safely disembarked and bused back to the terminal. Delta Air Lines confirmed the incident in a statement, explaining that the flight returned due to reports of smoke inside the aircraft. The airline apologized for the inconvenience and stressed that passenger safety is their top priority. This incident comes amid Delta’s recent efforts to address problems with contaminated cabin air. The airline has been replacing auxiliary power units (APUs) on its Airbus A320 fleet to prevent toxic fume events, which have previously been linked to neurological and respiratory issues in passengers and crew. Currently, no injuries have been reported among passengers or crew. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fumes in the cockpit.

Authorities confirmed that no patient was on board at the time of the crash. The helicopter was carrying a pilot, flight nurse, and paramedic, all of whom sustained severe injuries. Emergency personnel and bystanders assisted in the rescue, with reports indicating that one crew member was pinned under the wreckage before being freed and transported to a nearby hospital. “There were no patients or other vehicles involved in the crash,” REACH Air Medical Services said in a brief statement. “Our primary focus is on the well-being of our crew and their families.” The aircraft did not catch fire after impact, but debris was scattered across multiple lanes, forcing the closure of all eastbound lanes on Highway 50 for several hours. Westbound lanes also experienced significant slowdowns as emergency crews worked through the night to secure the site. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Washington, United States: As the U.S. government entered a partial shutdown at midnight on October 1, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced plans to furlough over 11,000 employees, approximately one-quarter of its workforce due to a lapse in federal funding. This move follows the Department of Transportation's notification that such furloughs would be necessary if the shutdown persisted. Despite the furloughs, more than 13,000 air traffic controllers are required to continue working without pay to maintain air traffic operations. The FAA is also proceeding with hiring and training new controllers, a departure from practices during previous shutdowns. The agency remains approximately 3,800 controllers short of its staffing targets. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has stated that about 25% of its 400 employees would be furloughed. However, the NTSB will continue to launch new investigations into air accidents and other incidents during the shutdown. Meanwhile, about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff working airport security checkpoints would also continue working without pay. During the 35-day shutdown in 2019, absences among controllers and TSA officers increased as paychecks were missed, leading to longer checkpoint wait times and slowed air traffic in cities such as New York, which put pressure on lawmakers to resolve the funding impasse. This adjustment follows a modest 0.3% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic to 13.17 million in August 2025. The revised forecast anticipates a total of 172–176 million domestic passengers for the fiscal year, compared to 165.4 million in FY25. International air traffic growth estimates have also been reduced to 13–15% for FY26, from the earlier projection of 15–20%. Factors contributing to this downgrade include geopolitical tensions affecting flight operations, decreased travel confidence following a recent aircraft accident, and global trade challenges such as the impact of U.S. tariffs. Consequently, ICRA projects the aviation sector's net losses to widen to ₹9,500–10,500 crore in FY26, up from ₹5,500 crore in FY25. This increase is attributed to slower passenger growth amid rising aircraft deliveries and operational hurdles. Industry capacity also declined, with capacity deployment in August 2025 dropping 5.8% compared to the same month last year. Supply chain disruptions and engine issues, particularly involving Pratt & Whitney engines, have led to approximately 133 aircraft being grounded as of March 31, 2025, accounting for 15–17% of the total industry fleet. Despite a decrease in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, cost pressures persist due to the dollar-denominated nature of key operating expenses, including fuel, aircraft leases, and maintenance. These factors continue to impact airlines' profitability. ICRA notes that while some carriers benefit from strong parental support and adequate liquidity, others may face challenges in maintaining credit metrics and liquidity profiles in the near term.

A 19-year-old male, believed to be a student, sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Liverpool Hospital in critical condition. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise and observing the helicopter struggling in the air before it crashed through multiple trees and landed on a parked car. One witness, who was in a nearby classroom, received a call from a friend who had heard the crash and rushed to the scene. They managed to pull the teenager from the wreckage, who was described as shaken but alive. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is conducting a formal investigation into the cause of the crash. The incident occurred during a training flight, with the deceased man believed to be the instructor. Man Dead & 19-Year Old Critically Injured After Fatal Helicopter Crash at Bankstown

New York, United States: A low-speed collision between two Delta Connection regional jets disrupted operations at LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday night, injuring a flight attendant and damaging both aircraft. The incident occurred when Delta Connection Flight 5155, operated by Endeavor Air and scheduled to depart for Roanoke, Virginia, struck the nose of Delta Connection Flight 5047 arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina. The right wing of the departing CRJ-900 clipped the cockpit section of the arriving aircraft. The collision shattered cockpit windows and damaged the forward fuselage of the Charlotte flight. A cabin crew member on board sustained a knee injury and was taken to a local hospital. No passengers were hurt. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that airport operations continued without major disruption. The Endeavor flight 5155 was carrying 32 people including 28 passengers and 4 crewmembers whereas Endeavor flight 5047 was carrying 61 people in which 57 were passengers and 4 crewmembers, all passengers were safely deplaned and transported by bus to the terminal, where Delta arranged hotel accommodation, meals, and rebooking support. The NTSB has dispatched a team of ten investigators and recovered flight recorders from both aircraft for analysis. The FAA stated that Flight 5155 had been instructed to hold position before the collision, but the exact circumstances remain under investigation. The focus will include taxiway intersection layout, air traffic control instructions, and pilot decision-making. Flights resumed on schedule Thursday morning, with no further delays.

In response, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) has strongly criticized the move, arguing that it prioritizes profits over people and will harm regional communities and staff stability. A survey conducted by the TWU, Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA), and the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) found that 68% of affected pilots would need to consider other employment if the bases closed, with one in five already impacted by recent closures in Perth and Cairns. The closures come as QantasLink posted near-record profits of $2.39 billion. The airline was recently fined a record $90 million by the Federal Court for illegally outsourcing 1,800 ground workers. According to Bloomberg Government, delegates at the 42nd ICAO General Assembly voted to maintain the current mandatory retirement age for airline pilots at 65, rejecting the proposal to extend it to 67. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had advocated for raising the pilot retirement age to 67, arguing that the two-year extension would alleviate pilot staffing shortages without compromising safety. The proposal is supported by examples from countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, where there are no strict upper age limits for pilots. IATA emphasized that raising the pilot retirement age aligns with ICAO’s efforts to standardize medical assessments, advocating for consistent oversight to ensure older pilots remain fit to fly. The move also supports broader aviation workforce goals, including the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and ICAO’s Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Programme, by helping retain experienced pilots and maintain a steady supply of qualified aviation personnel. However, the proposal faced opposition from pilot unions, including the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), which raised concerns about potential health and cognitive risks associated with older pilots. As a result, ICAO delegates voted to retain the existing age limit.
