Washington, United States: The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) has identified significant shortcomings in the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) aviation cybersecurity program, warning that weaknesses in planning, budget reporting, Zero Trust implementation and role definition could leave critical aviation systems increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats despite stronger collaboration between the FAA and Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The findings were published in the GAO's July 16, 2026 report, Aviation Cybersecurity: FAA and TSA Are Collaborating on Cybersecurity but Need to Address Key Shortfalls, following a nearly two-year audit conducted between August 2024 and July 2026. The review was mandated under the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 to examine how the FAA and TSA define and manage their respective cybersecurity responsibilities across aircraft, airports, and the National Airspace System (NAS). The GAO said that while the two agencies have substantially improved coordination through the Aviation Cybersecurity Initiative (ACI), important gaps remain in FAA's cybersecurity governance and TSA's strategic planning that could affect the long-term resilience of the US aviation ecosystem. Cybersecurity has become one of aviation's fastest-growing safety concerns as aircraft, airports, navigation infrastructure, and air traffic management systems become increasingly interconnected. Modern aircraft rely on digital avionics, satellite navigation, communications networks, weather systems and operational technology that continuously exchange data with FAA ground infrastructure. While this connectivity has significantly improved operational efficiency and safety, it has also expanded the number of potential cyberattack pathways available to malicious actors. The report notes that recent intelligence from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) shows aviation has experienced attacks from state-sponsored actors, financially motivated cybercriminals and hacktivist groups. Among the incidents cited was activity linked to a state-sponsored cyber actor associated with the People's Republic of China targeting the aviation subsector during 2024. The GAO also highlighted recurring vulnerabilities exploited across aviation systems, including poor software patch management, internet-accessible operational technology, outdated operating systems, weak network segmentation, insecure supply chains, default credentials and inadequate cybersecurity training. Successful exploitation of these weaknesses could result in unauthorized access to avionics, manipulation of cockpit data, disruption of air traffic communications, GPS spoofing, radio-frequency jamming and interference with critical flight operations. As co-sector risk management agencies for transportation critical infrastructure, the Department of Transportation and Department of Homeland Security share responsibility for protecting aviation systems. Within those departments, the FAA leads aviation safety while TSA oversees transportation security. The FAA operates cybersecurity across four operational environments administrative, mission critical, mission essential and research and development with responsibility distributed among several internal organizations, including the Air Traffic Organization, Aviation Safety, Information Security and Privacy Service, Finance and Management, Airports, Commercial Space Transportation, Security and Hazardous Materials Safety, and formerly the NextGen Office before its transition to the Airspace Modernization Office under the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024. One of the report's key findings is that the FAA has clearly defined cybersecurity responsibilities within its organizational structure. As of February 2026, the agency's Cybersecurity Strategy assigned responsibilities for securing internal information systems, protecting the National Airspace System, overseeing cybersecurity during aircraft certification and collaborating with aviation stakeholders. Seven FAA entities were specifically identified as responsible for implementing the strategy, providing clearer accountability across the agency. The GAO reached a different conclusion regarding TSA. Although TSA's broader strategic documents describe agency-wide goals and organizational responsibilities, they do not clearly define cybersecurity-specific roles and responsibilities for aviation. The report found that TSA's 2018 Cybersecurity Roadmap has become outdated and no longer aligns with the Department of Homeland Security's current cybersecurity strategy. Furthermore, the roadmap does not identify which TSA offices are responsible for implementing aviation cybersecurity objectives or clearly explain TSA's oversight responsibilities for airports and aircraft operators. During interviews conducted for the audit, several aviation stakeholders including airlines, avionics manufacturers and industry associations told GAO they remained uncertain about TSA's role in aviation cybersecurity. Some expressed confusion following TSA's March 2023 Joint Emergency Amendment imposing cybersecurity requirements on covered airports and aircraft operators, believing such requirements fell under FAA authority. While FAA and TSA subsequently issued clarifying guidance stating that aircraft airworthiness systems fall exclusively under FAA oversight, GAO concluded that greater clarity is still needed to avoid regulatory ambiguity and improve accountability across the aviation sector. Despite these concerns, GAO praised collaboration between the FAA and TSA through the Aviation Cybersecurity Initiative. The initiative, jointly led by the Departments of Transportation, Homeland Security and Defense, fully satisfied all eight of GAO's leading practices for effective interagency collaboration. According to the report, the agencies established common objectives, clearly documented governance structures, involved relevant federal agencies and private-sector stakeholders, and developed collaborative projects aimed at reducing cyber risks across the aviation ecosystem. Activities under the initiative include cyber tabletop exercises, aviation cybersecurity summits and industry information-sharing programs involving organizations such as Airlines for America, Airports Council International-North America, the Aerospace Industries Association, Garmin, MITRE and the Air Line Pilots Association. The GAO also scrutinized FAA funding for cybersecurity. Analysis of the President's budget requests showed significant variation among the seven FAA organizations responsible for implementing the Cybersecurity Strategy. The Air Traffic Organization received the largest funding requests, increasing from approximately $9.9 billion in fiscal year 2024 to nearly $10.9 billion in fiscal year 2026, while Aviation Safety, Finance and Management and other organizations also received substantial appropriations. Separate cybersecurity programs included funding for the National Airspace System Critical Infrastructure Cyber Enhancement Program, Information Systems Security Enhancement, Information Security/Cybersecurity research activities and the Office of Financial Management's Cybersecurity Program, which supports FAA's Security Operations Center and transition toward Zero Trust architecture. However, GAO found that the FAA failed to report all cybersecurity spending to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Specifically, the agency omitted spending associated with its Information Security/Cybersecurity Program supporting research and development from previous OMB cyber budget submissions. According to FAA officials, these expenditures were expected to be included in the fiscal year 2027 reporting cycle, but GAO found insufficient evidence that complete reporting had occurred during the audit period. The watchdog concluded that the FAA's internal budget reporting process only captured pre-populated investments and did not require program offices to report additional cybersecurity activities, increasing the risk that Congress and policymakers lack a complete picture of FAA cybersecurity spending when making future funding decisions. Another major focus of the audit was the FAA's implementation of Zero Trust architecture. The report found that FAA's overall Cybersecurity Strategy generally aligns with federal laws, NIST's Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 and recognized industry practices governing cybersecurity risk management for avionics and National Airspace System infrastructure. The FAA has established processes for identifying risks, selecting security controls, implementing safeguards, assessing effectiveness, authorizing systems and continuously monitoring cybersecurity throughout system life cycles. The agency also incorporates cybersecurity considerations into aircraft certification, including the use of special conditions for novel aircraft designs when existing regulations do not adequately address cybersecurity risks. Nevertheless, GAO determined that FAA's Zero Trust Implementation Plan does not fully conform to NIST guidance. The agency's transition plan lacked several elements recommended by NIST for successful enterprise-wide Zero Trust implementation, limiting FAA's ability to fully modernize cybersecurity protections as cyber threats continue evolving. Overall, the report concludes that while the United States has made meaningful progress in coordinating aviation cybersecurity efforts, both agencies must strengthen governance to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated cyber threats targeting one of the world's most complex transportation systems. GAO issued five recommendations, four directed to the FAA and one to TSA to improve strategic planning, clarify organizational responsibilities, strengthen cybersecurity budget reporting and better align Zero Trust implementation with federal best practices. The Departments of Transportation and Homeland Security generally agreed with the recommendations.

New Delhi, India: IndiGo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CFM International for more than 1,000 LEAP-1A engines to power 510 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft, marking the largest single LEAP engine order in CFM International's history. The agreement, announced on July 20, 2026, at the Farnborough air show, also includes CFM's support for establishing IndiGo's upcoming engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in India. The partnership will further provide long-term material services, including spare-parts supply, as IndiGo expands its fleet and operations. According to CFM, the arrangements are intended to support high dispatch reliability, predictable costs and continued operational support as the airline scales up. The deal comes as IndiGo accelerates its long-term fleet expansion. The airline currently has more than 430 aircraft and operates approximately 2,200 daily flights to more than 95 domestic and 45 international destinations. It welcomed more than 123 million customers in FY2026. Its existing A320/321 Family fleet has already crossed 375 aircraft, while the airline's broader aircraft order book is close to 1,000 aircraft. IndiGo has also stated its ambition to double its fleet by 2030. Willie Walsh, Chief Executive Officer Designate of IndiGo, said the agreement extends the airline's long-standing partnership with CFM as it moves into its next phase of growth and seeks to become a truly global carrier. He said CFM has supported IndiGo's expansion since 2016 and described the LEAP engine's proven reliability as a key factor in supporting the airline's scale, operational resilience and sustainability objectives. IndiGo's relationship with CFM dates back a decade. In 2016, the airline operated Airbus A320ceo Family aircraft powered by CFM56-5B engines. In 2019, it expanded the partnership by selecting LEAP-1A engines for its Airbus A320/321neo Family fleet. The latest agreement also strengthens CFM's position in India's rapidly expanding aviation market. India is CFM's third-largest market, with five Indian airlines operating more than 400 LEAP-powered aircraft and another 2,000 engines on order. H. Lawrence Culp Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GE Aerospace, said LEAP engines are now delivering up to twice the time on wing in hot and harsh operating environments compared with when the engine first entered service, while maintaining fuel efficiency and reliability. He added that GE Aerospace has more than 40 years of experience supporting India's aviation sector, with manufacturing operations in Pune, a local supplier network and advanced engineering capabilities in Bengaluru. For Safran, the agreement further underlines India's importance as one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets. Safran Chief Executive Officer Olivier Andriès said the company's investments in India, particularly in LEAP engine production and MRO capabilities, are aimed at supporting IndiGo's growth while contributing to the development of the country's aerospace industry. The planned IndiGo MRO capability comes amid a broader expansion of LEAP maintenance infrastructure. Safran last year inaugurated its largest LEAP engine MRO centre, a 45,000-square-metre facility that is expected to eventually handle up to 300 LEAP shop visits annually and feature a next-generation test bench. CFM said more than 10,000 LEAP engines have been delivered to date, making the programme the fastest ramp-up in commercial aviation history. The company continues to introduce upgrades, including a high-pressure turbine (HPT) durability kit designed to extend time on wing and a reverse bleed system (RBS) aimed at reducing airline maintenance requirements. The Times of India reported that the list price of a LEAP-1A engine is around $14.5 million, which would put the theoretical list-price value of more than 1,000 engines at above $14.5 billion. However, actual transaction values are generally not disclosed because engine pricing varies between customers and agreements. CFM International is a 50:50 joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines. The company produces the LEAP family of engines and supports LEAP and CFM56 fleets worldwide. The partnership is also developing the RISE programme, which is focused on next-generation propulsion technologies for future commercial aircraft. For IndiGo, the agreement represents more than a major engine procurement. The combination of a record LEAP-1A commitment, long-term material support and plans for expanded MRO capabilities in India gives the airline a broader support structure for its next phase of fleet growth. It also reflects the increasing scale of India's commercial aviation market and the growing role of local maintenance and aerospace infrastructure in supporting the country's expanding airline fleets.

IndiGo Signs Record Deal For 1,000+ CFM LEAP Engines To Power 510 Airbus Jets

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain: A potential mid-air collision involving an Iberia Airbus A321 and an Air Europa Boeing 787-9 was narrowly avoided over the Atlantic Ocean on July 10, 2026, after both aircraft received coordinated Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) resolution advisories while flying at the same altitude on the same airway in opposite directions. According to Spain's Civil Aviation Accident and Incident Investigation Commission (CIAIAC), the incident occurred at about 01:23 UTC in the oceanic sector of the Canary Islands Flight Information Region/Upper Information Region (FIR/UIR). The Iberia Airbus A321, registration EC-OLE and flight call sign IBE0140, was operating on airway N857 at flight level 360 (FL360), or approximately 36,000 feet, while flying northeast between the ETIBA and BIPET reporting points. At the same time, another aircraft, identified by CIAIAC as a Boeing 787-9 registered EC-NBM with flight call sign AEA05, was flying in the opposite direction on the same airway and at the same flight level. The two aircraft's conflicting trajectories triggered a TCAS Traffic Advisory (TA) on the Iberia aircraft, followed by a TCAS Resolution Advisory instructing the A321 to descend. The Boeing 787-9 simultaneously received a TCAS RA instructing it to climb. The Iberia aircraft followed the automated avoidance instruction and descended approximately 500 feet before receiving a LEVEL OFF command. The Boeing 787-9, meanwhile, climbed approximately 400 feet in accordance with its TCAS instruction and continued the maneuver until receiving a CLEAR OF CONFLICT warning. The opposing vertical maneuvers separated the aircraft and prevented a possible collision. CIAIAC said both aircraft subsequently continued their respective flights and landed safely, with no injuries or personal damage reported. The incident has been described as a serious loss-of-separation event because the two aircraft were operating on the same airway, at the same flight level and in opposite directions over oceanic airspace. The TCAS systems installed on both aircraft provided the final safety barrier by issuing complementary climb and descent commands, allowing the aircraft to move vertically away from each other. The incident reflects the importance of TCAS as a last line of defense in commercial aviation. While the system does not replace air traffic control separation procedures, it is designed to detect conflicting aircraft and issue coordinated instructions to pilots when a collision risk develops. In this case, one aircraft was instructed to descend while the other was directed to climb, allowing both crews to respond in opposite vertical directions. CIAIAC has opened an investigation into the occurrence. The authority's preliminary information indicates that the event took place in Spanish-controlled oceanic airspace over the Atlantic, and its account confirms that both aircraft successfully completed their flights after the TCAS alerts.

TCAS Prevents Potential Mid-Air Collision Between Iberia A321 & Air Europa Boeing 787

South Carolina, United States: A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800 operating Flight WN4761 from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) diverted to Charleston International Airport (CHS) on Monday, July 20, after the flight crew detected indications of a suspected fuel leak while cruising over South Carolina. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. Flight WN4761 departed Orlando International Airport at 8:54 a.m. ET from Terminal A, Gate 125, on a scheduled nonstop service to Manchester, New Hampshire. The aircraft climbed normally for approximately one hour before reaching a cruising altitude of 37,000 feet over South Carolina. The aircraft involved was an 11-year-old Boeing 737-8H4, registered as N8662F. While the aircraft was at cruise altitude, the crew identified indications of a possible fuel leak and declared an emergency by transmitting the 7700 transponder code. The code is the internationally recognized general emergency squawk used by flight crews to alert air traffic control that an aircraft requires immediate priority handling. Following the emergency declaration, air traffic control cleared the aircraft for an expedited descent and arranged for the flight to divert to Charleston International Airport. The Boeing 737-800 subsequently landed safely on Runway 15, with emergency response vehicles standing by as a precaution. No injuries were reported among those onboard. The precise nature of the fuel leak indication remains unclear. It has not been established whether the aircraft experienced an actual structural or mechanical fuel leak or whether the warning resulted from a sensor or valve-related anomaly. The aircraft remained at Charleston after the diversion, where maintenance personnel began a detailed inspection to determine the root cause of the suspected fuel leak indication. Southwest Boeing 737-800 Diverts To Charleston After Suspected Fuel Leak Mid-Air

Washington, United States: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will allow Boeing to resume issuing airworthiness certificates for all newly built 737 MAX and 787 aircraft beginning July 20, 2026, following months of safety oversight and production quality reviews that found the manufacturer's certification results matched those of FAA inspectors. The decision marks another step in the regulator's gradual restoration of Boeing's certification responsibilities after years of heightened oversight following the 737 MAX accidents and 787 production quality concerns. According to the FAA, Boeing and the agency have alternated responsibility for issuing airworthiness certificates since September 2025, with each taking turns on a weekly basis. During the past eight months, the FAA said it observed comparable production quality findings regardless of whether certificates were issued by Boeing or FAA inspectors. Based on those results, the agency concluded it can safely return full responsibility for issuing airworthiness certificates to Boeing while maintaining strict regulatory oversight. The decision became effective Monday, July 20, 2026. An airworthiness certificate is the final approval issued before a newly manufactured aircraft can be delivered to an airline and enter commercial service. The certificate confirms that the aircraft complies with its approved design and is safe to operate. "Safety drives everything we do, and this step forward is only possible because we are confident it can be done safely," FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said. "Our inspectors will continue rigorous oversight of Boeing's production while focusing more of their time where it has the greatest impact identifying and addressing potential risks earlier in the manufacturing process." Despite restoring Boeing's authority, the FAA emphasized that it will continue extensive oversight of the manufacturer's production system. The agency said its inspectors will maintain inspections, audits and monitoring of Boeing's manufacturing operations, including critical assembly activities, production quality trends and compliance with approved type design and engineering requirements. The regulator also said it will continue closely monitoring Boeing's Safety Management System (SMS) and evaluating the company's overall safety culture as part of its ongoing surveillance. The certification authority is exercised through the FAA's Organization Designation Authorization (ODA) programme, which allows approved organizations to perform specific certification functions on behalf of the agency. Boeing's ODA unit operates as an independent organization within the company representing the FAA. The regulator renewed Boeing's ODA authorization for an additional three years in May 2025. The FAA first revoked Boeing's authority to issue airworthiness certificates for the 737 MAX in 2019 following the fatal Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashes, which together claimed 346 lives and were linked to flaws in the aircraft's Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). The agency later suspended Boeing's authority to self-certify newly built 787 Dreamliners in 2022 after identifying production quality issues during manufacturing. Since September 2025, Boeing and FAA inspectors have alternated weekly responsibility for conducting the final safety checks required before aircraft deliveries. According to the FAA, the parallel certification process consistently produced similar findings, providing confidence that Boeing's certification procedures met the agency's safety standards. While Boeing will once again issue airworthiness certificates for all newly produced 737 MAX and 787 aircraft, FAA inspectors will remain actively involved in overseeing the manufacturer's production system. The regulator said the move will allow government inspectors to devote more resources to identifying manufacturing risks earlier in the production process rather than performing every final certification. Boeing welcomed the decision and said it will continue working to improve safety as FAA oversight remains in place.

The airline has not disclosed the reason for the emergency at the time of publication. Alaska Airlines Boeing 787 Declares Emergency, Returns To Rome During Seattle Flight

Tocantins, Brazil: A private Embraer EMB-721C Sertanejo aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Palmas, in Brazil's Tocantins state, on Saturday, July 18, killing two passengers and seriously injuring the pilot. The aircraft, registered PT-EIB (manufacturer serial number 721042), departed Palmas–Brigadeiro Lysias Rodrigues Airport (PMW/SBPJ) on a private flight to Redenção Airport (RDC/SNDC) in the neighboring state of Pará. The 1977-built aircraft lost altitude during its initial climb before crashing into a farm area between Palmas and Lajeado. The accident had two fatalities among the three occupants, while the pilot survived the crash and was transported to hospital for treatment. The aircraft was destroyed in the impact. Brazilian media reports identified the victims as 68-year-old doctor Dr. Antônio Carlos Barbosa and his 62-year-old wife, Marlene Barbosa, who were travelling aboard the aircraft when it crashed. Both died at the scene, while the pilot was rescued alive and taken to hospital with injuries. Local reports said the couple were travelling after the doctor had attended his dad’s funeral from Palmas to Redenção. Emergency response teams were dispatched to the crash site shortly after the accident was reported. Authorities secured the area while recovery operations and preliminary examinations of the wreckage were carried out. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Initial information indicates the aircraft lost altitude moments after departure during the initial climb, but investigators have not released any findings on what led to the accident. The aircraft involved was a privately owned Embraer EMB-721C Sertanejo, a single-engine light aircraft manufactured in 1977. According to ASN, the flight was being conducted as a private operation. Brazil's Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) is expected to oversee the technical investigation into the accident. As with all aviation investigations, the objective will be to determine the circumstances and contributing factors of the crash.

Toulouse, France: Qantas and Airbus are preparing for another major milestone in the airline's long-running Project Sunrise programme, with the first Airbus A350-1000 ULR scheduled to undertake a marathon nonstop certification flight from Toulouse, France, to Melbourne, Australia, later this month. If completed as planned, the journey is expected to last around 22 hours, making it one of the longest flights ever operated by an Airbus test aircraft. It is the first of 12 A350-1000 ULR aircraft ordered by Qantas for Project Sunrise and has been serving as the lead aircraft in Airbus' certification campaign since completing its maiden flight from Toulouse on June 2, 2026. During that first flight, the aircraft remained airborne for 3 hours and 43 minutes, climbed to just over 41,000 feet, and carried extensive flight-test instrumentation. The planned Toulouse–Melbourne sector will cover approximately 17,000 kilometres (about 10,560 miles) nonstop. Unlike a commercial service, the flight will be operated by Airbus' dedicated flight-test crew and engineers to validate the aircraft's performance, fuel consumption, systems and endurance under ultra-long-range operating conditions before certification is completed. Airbus has equipped MSN 707 with specialist flight-test equipment throughout the programme, and the aircraft will later be converted into its final passenger configuration for Qantas. Australian media reports indicate the aircraft is expected to arrive in Melbourne on July 24, subject to Airbus' final operational schedule. Following its arrival, the aircraft is expected to undergo additional evaluations before returning to Europe as Airbus completes the A350-1000 ULR certification campaign. While the arrival date has been widely reported, Airbus and Qantas have not formally announced the schedule. The A350-1000 ULR has been developed specifically for Qantas' Project Sunrise, enabling nonstop flights from Australia's east coast to destinations previously beyond the reach of commercial airliners. Airbus says the aircraft is capable of flying nearly 10,000 nautical miles with flight times of up to 22 hours, allowing direct services from Sydney to London and Sydney to New York. To achieve the additional range, Airbus has incorporated a new 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank, structural enhancements and revised fuel system architecture unique to the ultra-long-range variant. The aircraft is also fitted with a higher maximum take-off weight and other modifications designed to support the world's longest commercial passenger flights. Qantas ordered 12 A350-1000ULRs in May 2022 as the centrepiece of Project Sunrise. The airline's first production aircraft, named Vega, is scheduled for delivery in April 2027, with the inaugural non-stop Sydney–London service planned for October 2027. A nonstop Sydney–New York service is expected to follow. The customised aircraft will carry 238 passengers, significantly fewer than a standard A350-1000, to maximise range and passenger comfort. The cabin will feature 6 First Suites, 52 Business Suites, 40 Premium Economy seats and 140 Economy seats, along with a dedicated Wellbeing Zone where passengers can stretch, hydrate and move around during flights lasting up to 22 hours. Once Airbus completes certification, MSN 707 will be retrofitted with Qantas' final cabin interior before entering commercial service. The remaining aircraft in the 12-aircraft fleet will be delivered progressively, enabling Qantas to expand its ultra-long-haul network and redefine nonstop travel between Australia and major global destinations.
