Connecticut, United States: A single-engine Piper PA-32 aircraft crashed into the Long Island Sound near the Thimble Islands on Sunday morning, June 1, 2025, shortly after departing from Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford. Both occupants, a 41-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl were rescued with minor injuries. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft took off around 10:30 a.m. and soon after reported an emergency. Air traffic control directed the pilot to attempt an emergency landing at Tweed New Haven Airport. However, the aircraft was unable to reach the airport and crashed into the water near the Thimble Islands. The U.S. Coast Guard, along with the Branford Fire Department's Marine 5 unit, responded to the crash site. The pilot had managed to transmit the aircraft's coordinates before it submerged, facilitating a swift rescue. Both occupants were found alert and were transported to Stony Creek Pier for initial medical evaluation before being taken to Yale New Haven Hospital. The FAA has initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash. Details regarding the aircraft's maintenance history and the pilot's experience have not been released. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been notified and is expected to participate in the investigation. The Piper PA-32 is a six-seat, single-engine aircraft commonly used for personal and business travel. The specific aircraft involved in this incident was registered in the United States; however, the registration number has not been disclosed.
