Singapore: A United Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operating flight UA2 from Singapore to San Francisco was forced to return shortly after departure on April 24, 2026, following the detection of a maintenance issue mid-flight.

The aircraft departed Singapore Changi Airport at approximately 9:33 a.m. local time and began climbing toward its planned cruising altitude when the crew identified the problem and aborted the climb.

The cockpit crew subsequently declared an emergency by transmitting a Squawk 7700 signal and initiated a return to Singapore. Flight tracking data indicates the aircraft had reached its initial climb phase heading toward around 31,000 feet before reversing course over the South China Sea roughly 30 to 45 minutes into the journey.

To ensure a safe landing weight, the pilots coordinated with air traffic control to descend to about 6,100 feet and conducted fuel dumping for approximately 10 minutes, a standard safety procedure for long-haul aircraft unable to land immediately after takeoff.

The aircraft landed safely back in Singapore around 90 minutes after departure, with 212 passengers and 15 crew members onboard. Emergency services were on standby as a precaution, though no injuries were reported.

United Airlines stated that the diversion was caused by a “maintenance issue,” while multiple onboard accounts pointed to a strong burning or electrical odor circulating through the cabin shortly after takeoff.

Passengers described the smell as acrid and originating from the air vents, raising concerns of a potential electrical fault, though no fire was reported.

United Airlines launched its “Elevated” interior of the affected aircraft and took its inaugural flight earlier this week, on April 22 as per the press release. It was a long-haul trip from San Francisco to Singapore on UA1.
