Tangerang, Indonesia: A Malaysian airline pilot has been arrested in Indonesia after authorities allegedly discovered more than 70,000 ecstasy pills in his luggage following a scheduled flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta, in a case that has prompted a criminal investigation and an internal review by Malaysia Airlines.
Indonesian Customs announced on July 31 that the 39-year-old pilot, identified only by the initials MSBO, was arrested on July 29 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport shortly after operating a Malaysia Airlines service from Kuala Lumpur. Authorities have not publicly released his full identity.
According to Indonesian officials, customs officers intercepted the pilot after receiving intelligence and allegedly recovered 70,114 MDMA (ecstasy) pills along with 2.7 grams of methamphetamine from his luggage. Officials said the seized MDMA weighed approximately 26 kilograms. A search of the suitcase uncovered 14 large packages of ecstasy pills and one package containing methamphetamine, police said.
Customs officials alleged that the pilot had agreed to transport the suitcase on behalf of another individual in exchange for 50,000 Malaysian ringgit (about US$12,200). Authorities described him as acting as a courier and said investigations are continuing to identify others connected to the suspected trafficking operation.
Officials further stated that a urine test allegedly returned positive results for cocaine and methamphetamine, indicating the suspect was under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrival in Jakarta.
The pilot has been formally designated a criminal suspect under Indonesian law. Authorities said investigators in Indonesia are coordinating with their Malaysian counterparts as the investigation continues.
Malaysia Airlines has declined to comment on the details of the case, citing the ongoing investigation. However, the airline said it maintains zero tolerance for any form of misconduct, has launched an internal review and will cooperate fully with the relevant authorities.
