Europe: The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued a high‑level advisory recommending that airlines avoid operating in Iranian airspace due to escalating safety risks stemming from heightened regional tensions and increased military alert levels. The warning, published on January 16 in a Conflict Zone Information Bulletin (CZIB), underscores a “high risk” to civilian flights over the Tehran Flight Information Region (FIR) at all altitudes and flight levels. EASA’s advisory is part of its ongoing mandate to protect civil aviation amid conflict zone threats. Citing credible intelligence and assessments by member states and the European Commission, the regulator said Iranian air defence forces are on a heightened state of alert, increasing the potential for misidentification of civilian aircraft. The agency also noted the presence of advanced weapons systems and air‑defence networks that could pose danger to commercial flights. “Given the ongoing situation and the potential for military action, there is an increased likelihood of misidentification,” EASA stated, advising airlines not only to avoid Iranian airspace but also to exercise caution and contingency planning in the airspace of neighboring countries, particularly where U.S. military bases are located. Iran had temporarily closed its airspace on January 14, a move that lasted nearly five hours and prompted flight cancellations and reroutings by several international carriers before reopening later that day. Although the closure was lifted, many airlines including major European operators continue to avoid both Iranian and Iraqi airspace due to persistent geopolitical uncertainty. Flight tracking data shows leading carriers such as Wizz Air, Lufthansa, British Airways, Finnair, and KLM opting for alternative routes over Afghanistan and Central Asia to minimize exposure to the volatile region. Some flights now require refuelling or crew changes in locations such as Cyprus and Greece because of these extended paths. Germany’s national air traffic control authority has also issued its own advisory recommending that aircraft avoid Iranian airspace until at least February 10, underlining the broader European consensus on the risks. The advisory is non‑binding but carries significant weight for EU‑registered carriers and third‑country operators authorized by the agency. Airlines are being urged to monitor evolving aeronautical information, adjust flight plans accordingly, and coordinate with relevant aviation authorities to safeguard passengers and crew. EASA’s warning remains valid until February 16, 2026, unless further reviews prompt revision. The agency has stressed ongoing vigilance and continued consultation of all available risk and aeronautical data. Airlines worldwide are expected to adapt routes and operational plans as the situation evolves, balancing safety considerations with commercial imperatives.

Dublin, Ireland: European budget airline Wizz Air has announced an ambitious recruitment and training campaign to prepare up to 1,200 new pilots by 2028, including 240 UK-based cadets, as part of its long-term growth strategy to expand its fleet and secure a steady supply of trained flight crew. The Budapest-headquartered carrier, which operates one of Europe’s youngest fleets, unveiled the initiative through its Wizz Air Pilot Academy, targeting both aspiring aviators and mid-career professionals with no prior flying experience. According to Wizz Air, the recruitment process begins with a six-month selection phase, followed by approximately two years of structured flight training. Successful graduates will then join the airline as Airbus A320/321 First Officers, flying across its extensive European and Middle Eastern network. The programme features an improved financial scheme for tuition fees for successful cadets, although participants are expected to meet certain entry conditions, including holding the right to live and work in one of Wizz Air’s operational base countries. Trainees must also be at least 18 years old, fluent in English, and capable of swimming 50 metres unaided Though Wizz Air currently does not operate commercial flights to or from Ireland, its participation in events such as Pilot Careers Live Dublin reflects its intention to expand its visibility and recruit skilled candidates from Ireland’s established aviation ecosystem. The academy offers guidance throughout the application process, including access to partner flight schools and approved training organizations (ATOs) that deliver the structured modular and integrated training pathways required for Wizz Air operations. Cadets joining the programme can expect to earn around £40,000 (€46,000) during training, rising to £60,000 (€68,000) upon completion and promotion to First Officer. After gaining experience, pilots may earn £90,000 (€103,000) after two years, with Captains commanding up to £200,000 (€230,000) annually. These figures reflect Wizz Air’s structured career progression system, which allows cadets to move from trainee status to command positions within a few years, a key attraction for career entrants in an industry known for long qualification timelines. Industry analysts note that the initiative is part of Wizz Air’s broader plan to grow its fleet to 500 aircraft by 2030, enabling the airline to carry over 100 million passengers annually. The expansion aligns with Wizz Air’s large Airbus A321neo order book, aimed at boosting efficiency and sustainability. London, United Kingdom: Passengers flying with major UK airlines are experiencing longer delays than before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new analysis. The report, based on Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data, compared flight punctuality between May 2024 and April 2025 with pre-pandemic figures from 2019, revealing a widespread decline in on-time departures among the country’s leading carriers. The analysis focused on six major airlines: British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, Tui, and Wizz Air, and measured punctuality as flights departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled times. The results were striking. Tui emerged as the least punctual, with only 59.2% of flights on time compared to 67.2% in 2019. Jet2 and Ryanair also experienced substantial drops, with Jet2’s on-time departures falling from 81.8% to 68%, and Ryanair from 77.8% to 66.5%. Flag carrier British Airways declined from 71.5% to 68.7%, while easyJet slipped from 70.6% to 67.8%. Wizz Air, although slightly affected, maintained 66% punctuality, nearly matching its pre-pandemic performance. The report also highlighted cancellation rates. British Airways recorded the highest cancellations at 2.33%, while Jet2 had the lowest at 0.12%. Despite the drop in punctuality, airlines have generally operated more flights than in 2019. Ryanair, for example, scheduled approximately 162,411 flights in 2024, some 24,000 more than in 2019, placing additional strain on infrastructure and scheduling. Several factors have contributed to the delays. Staff shortages in Air Traffic Control (ATC) remain a significant issue, with Eurocontrol reporting 10–20% fewer controllers than needed in some parts of Europe. While UK ATC provider NATS maintains that it is fully staffed, unions warn of an impending “retirement bulge” among controllers, which could intensify operational pressures. Airspace constraints, driven by geopolitical conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and other regional tensions, have further limited usable routes, creating congestion in available corridors. Additionally, the surge in post-pandemic travel has placed increased demands on airport infrastructure, ground operations, and airline scheduling. Airlines maintain that many delays are beyond their control. Wizz Air and Tui have emphasised that they prioritise minimizing cancellations even if this results in longer wait times for passengers.
