Lyon, France: An Air France Airbus A320 operating flight AF7562 from Paris-Orly to Ajaccio was forced to divert and make an emergency landing at Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport on Saturday, December 20, after a technical problem developed shortly after departure, the airline and multiple sources confirmed. The aircraft, carrying 173 passengers, departed from Paris-Orly and climbed to cruising altitude when crew detected a technical issue that prompted them to declare an emergency and reroute to the nearest suitable airport as a precautionary measure, according to Air France’s statement. The airline described the fault as a technical problem that did not compromise the aircraft’s airworthiness, emphasizing that crews followed procedures by shutting down the affected engine and diverting safely. The aircraft touched down at Lyon at approximately 18:25 local time, with no injuries reported. According to aviation specialists cited by French media, the incident likely involved a “pompage moteur”, a known phenomenon where air pockets in the engine cause significant vibrations, forcing pilots to shut down the engine. Once the engine was cut, vibrations subsided and the Airbus A320 continued to land normally on the remaining operational engine. Several passengers described a frightening experience in the cabin, reporting strong vibrations, alarms activating, and what they perceived as flashes or flames near one wing. One traveler told RTL that the aircraft “suddenly dropped” and multiple control lights illuminated, adding to onboard alarm. Others recounted hearing a loud “boom” and visible movements that led to panic among some passengers. Despite passenger perceptions, Air France and aviation experts clarified that there was no confirmed engine fire and no smoke warnings were triggered during the flight. Some brief flames at the engine exhaust area limited in duration and contained within the engine could explain eyewitness descriptions but did not indicate an in-flight fire event. After the unscheduled landing in Lyon, ground teams accommodated all passengers and arranged onward travel. Air France rebooked the 173 passengers on a later flight from Lyon to Bastia, which departed at 22:39 and arrived at 23:50. From Bastia, passengers were transferred by bus to Ajaccio, arriving in the early hours of Sunday morning. The airline expressed regret for the disruption and reiterated that passenger and crew safety remained the company’s top priority throughout the event.

Dulles, United States: A United Airlines Boeing 777 bound for Tokyo made an emergency return to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) on Saturday, December 13, after experiencing an engine malfunction shortly after takeoff, officials confirmed. United Flight 803, operating a Boeing 777-200ER with 275 passengers and 15 crew members on board, departed Dulles around midday for Tokyo’s Haneda Airport when one of its engines lost power. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and airline spokespersons said the aircraft returned safely to the airport and landed without injury to any person on board. According to the FAA, the flight encountered a power loss in one engine shortly after departure. Visual footage shared on social media and confirmed by officials showed smoke near an airport runway after a part of the engine’s cowling separated and fell to the ground, igniting a patch of dry brush outside the runway perimeter. Fire crews on the ground quickly extinguished the blaze. Airport fire and rescue units inspected the aircraft after it returned, and operations at the affected runway were briefly paused before normal service resumed. United Airlines stated it would place passengers on a replacement aircraft later on Saturday to continue the scheduled flight to Tokyo. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all passengers and crew disembarked safely and praised the crew’s conduct during the incident. The FAA has launched a formal investigation into the engine failure to determine the precise cause and ensure aviation safety protocols are upheld. An airport spokesperson reiterated that the emergency response was swift and effective, highlighting that the fire was contained quickly and no injuries were reported. Ranchi, India: An IndiGo aircraft operating the Bhubaneswar–Ranchi sector experienced a tail strike while landing at Birsa Munda Airport on the evening of 12 December, officials confirmed. The incident caused a sudden jolt inside the cabin, but all passengers and crew were safe, with no reported injuries. Flight 6E‑7361, an ATR‑72 turboprop carrying about 70 passengers, made contact with the runway with its tail section during touchdown, according to airport authorities. Vinod Kumar, Ranchi Airport Director, confirmed that the impact was jolting but did not endanger passenger safety. “All passengers were safe. The aircraft sustained minor damage and has been grounded pending technical inspection,” Kumar stated. Following the incident, the aircraft was withdrawn from service after preliminary checks indicated it was unfit for further operations. The airline also cancelled the return flight from Ranchi to Bhubaneswar, offering passengers alternative arrangements or rescheduling options. Some passengers were transported by road to nearby destinations. Airport operations remained normal despite the incident. Aviation authorities and IndiGo’s technical team have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tail strike, including factors such as aircraft configuration, weather conditions, or operational technique. Tail strikes occur when the rear portion of an aircraft contacts the runway during take-off or landing. While typically survivable, such incidents require detailed inspection to ensure structural and system integrity. In recent years, IndiGo has faced increased regulatory scrutiny over operational performance and safety standards, particularly amid widespread flight disruptions across its network. Earlier in March 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 operating Flight 6E‑5325 from Mumbai to Chennai also suffered a tail strike during landing at Chennai International Airport, when the aircraft’s empennage made contact with the runway surface. The aircraft was then grounded for technical inspection and necessary repairs, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) launched a formal investigation into the incident to determine contributing factors, including flight operations and aircraft handling.

Florida, United States: A small twin-engine aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on the southbound side of Interstate 95 in Brevard County on Monday evening, striking a car in traffic as it descended. The plane identified as a multi-engine Beechcraft 55 came down near mile marker 201 in Cocoa at approximately 5:45 p.m., according to local authorities. The aircraft collided with a 2023 Toyota Camry being driven southbound, causing the car to be crushed against the median and scattering debris across multiple lanes. The Camry’s driver, a 57-year-old woman, was transported to Viera Hospital with what were described as minor injuries. Both the 27-year-old pilot and a 27-year-old passenger aboard the aircraft escaped without injury. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene. One bystander, who captured dash-cam footage of the crash, said the plane appeared to “drop out of the sky” and impact the rear of the car before sliding to a halt. Others at the scene including two nurses among passing motorists rushed to assist the driver. Authorities including the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched an investigation, with support from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Preliminary findings indicate the aircraft lost power in both engines before the emergency landing. There are no reports of fuel leaks, and traffic on the interstate which had been blocked in both directions for several hours was restored by around 9 p.m. local time. Officials have appealed to anyone with video footage or additional information to contact the NTSB, as investigators continue their probe into what caused the dual-engine failure. This was the second small-aircraft emergency reported in Florida on December 8. Earlier that afternoon, a Cessna 172 made an emergency landing on Jacobs Road in DeLand, about 46 miles north of Orlando. The single-engine plane came down around 2 p.m., according to reports from Fox 13 News. No major injuries were reported in that incident.

Edinburg, United Kingdom: A British Airways flight from Edinburgh to London Heathrow was forced to declare an emergency shortly after takeoff, after pilots discovered a landing‑gear fault on 8 December. The incident disrupted operations at Edinburgh Airport and triggered the temporary suspension of all flights. Flight BA1443, operating an Airbus A320 (registration G‑EUUI), took off from Edinburgh’s Runway 24 at approximately 11:13 GMT on Monday morning. According to tracking data and air‑traffic sources, the flight crew soon identified that the aircraft’s landing gear could not be fully retracted. They issued a “7700” squawk the general‑emergency code then held at altitude around 6,500 feet while troubleshooting. The aircraft circled near the Stirling area for roughly 30–40 minutes before returning to Edinburgh. It landed safely at around 12:20 GMT. Upon landing, the aircraft came to a stop on Edinburgh’s only operational runway and remained immobilised due to the landing‑gear problem. As a result, the airport suspended all arrivals and departures until the aircraft could be towed off and the runway inspected and cleared. During the shutdown, flights from other carriers including easyJet, Ryanair and Lufthansa were delayed or diverted, creating a ripple effect of disruption across the airport’s schedule. Passengers aboard BA1443 were safely evacuated, they were transported back to the terminal via coaches. In a statement, British Airways confirmed the flight’s safe return, “The aircraft returned to Edinburgh Airport safely after our pilots identified a technical issue after take‑off.” The airline added it is working to minimise disruption for affected customers. Edinburgh Airport said that safety remained its top priority. After the aircraft was towed off the runway and hydraulic fluid cleared, normal operations resumed. The airport thanked passengers for their patience and the response teams for their swift action.

Istanbul, Turkey: A scheduled flight from Pristina to Istanbul ended in a runway excursion late on December 7 as a Anadolujet (AJet) Boeing 737-800 veered off the newly-opened runway at Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW). The incident has forced closure of runway 06R/24L and triggered widespread flight delays and cancellations across one of Turkey’s busiest air hubs. Flight VF102 registration TC-JZN touched down on runway 24L just before 18:00 local time. According to Initial reports, the aircraft slowed but, while attempting a high-speed turnoff via taxiway A6 roughly 1,850 metres down the runway, failed to make the turn. The plane skidded off the paved surface onto soft ground adjacent to the runway, coming to a halt within the runway protected area. Despite the dramatic nature of the event, all passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely using external stairs and emergency slides were not deployed. There have been no reports of injuries. According to the airline and official statements from the embassy of Kosovo in Turkey, the aircraft’s deviation was not due to a mechanical failure or pilot error, but was triggered by wet and soft terrain following heavy rainfall in the area. Investigators have reportedly launched a probe to verify whether runway surface conditions played a decisive role. The incident forced an immediate closure of runway 06R/24L to allow for safe removal of the aircraft and inspection of the runway and taxiway infrastructure. Aviation authorities recorded flight delays. Flights operated by several major carriers including Turkish Airlines, as well as regional and international airlines were among those severely disrupted. For many passengers, plans for onward travel or hotel reservations in Istanbul and other destinations have been upended. Airport management crews have commenced full inspection of runway and taxiway surfaces, drainage systems, and runway safety features before reopening. Meanwhile, regulatory bodies have signaled that a broader review of weather-related landing protocols and runway maintenance procedures may follow.
