Middle East: Global air travel faced unprecedented disruption this weekend after the United States and Israel launched a large-scale attack

Frankfurt, Germany: Germany’s flagship carrier Lufthansa was forced to cancel nearly 800 flights on Thursday after pilots and cabin crew staged coordinated industrial action, disrupting travel for around 100,000 passengers . The 24-hour strike began shortly after midnight on Thursday, February 12, and affected most Lufthansa-operated services, particularly at its main hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, where departure boards showed widespread cancellations throughout the day. According to multiple industry reports, Lufthansa removed approximately 800 flights from its schedule, representing more than half of its planned daily operations. The airline said the walkout caused significant disruption to both short-haul and long-haul services, including intercontinental departures. Lufthansa confirmed that about 100,000 passengers were impacted by the cancellations. The airline implemented large-scale rebooking measures, transferring travellers to partner airlines within the Lufthansa Group including Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines as well as offering rail alternatives within Germany in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn. Passengers were advised not to travel to the airport unless they had received confirmation that their flight was operating. Lufthansa also stated that customers whose flights were cancelled were eligible for full refunds or rebooking at no extra cost. Under European passenger rights rules, affected travellers may also be entitled to compensation ranging from €250 to €600, as airline staff strikes are generally not classified as extraordinary circumstances. The strike was triggered by parallel disputes involving two major unions: Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), representing pilots, over disagreements related to pension schemes and retirement benefits. UFO (Unabhängige Flugbegleiter Organisation), representing cabin crew, over job security, working conditions and collective agreements, including concerns linked to Lufthansa’s regional subsidiary operations. The strike was driven by unresolved labour disputes between staff unions and Lufthansa management, the main issues were pension benefits, job security and stalled contract negotiations. Union leaders said negotiations with Lufthansa management had stalled after months of talks, prompting the one-day walkout. Lufthansa management described the action as “disproportionate and unnecessary”, warning that the disruption would affect not only passengers but also Germany’s wider aviation network during a high-demand travel period. As of Friday, February 13, Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed that the strike had ended as scheduled, and that flight operations were largely returning to normal. No further industrial action has been announced at this stage. The airline said most services were operating according to schedule on Friday, although minor residual delays and isolated cancellations remained possible due to aircraft and crew repositioning. The disruption coincided with a busy week in Germany, with international travel demand elevated due to major events such as the Munich Security Conference and the opening of the Berlin International Film Festival, amplifying the impact on business and diplomatic travel. Lufthansa operates more than 700 aircraft and carries over 100 million passengers annually, making it one of Europe’s largest airline groups. The strike represents one of the most significant single-day disruptions to its operations in recent years.

EASA Issues High-Risk Advisory Urging Airlines To Avoid Iranian Airspace

Berlin, Germany: Two of Europe’s leading carriers Lufthansa and Ryanair are scaling back their operations in Germany, citing rising aviation taxes, airport charges, and regulatory costs that have rendered several domestic and regional routes economically unviable. Budget carrier Ryanair has confirmed plans to cut approximately 800,000 seats across its German winter schedule, removing 24 routes and reducing flights at nine airports, including Berlin, Hamburg, and Memmingen. The airline attributed its decision to what it calls “excessive access costs” that continue to undermine the country’s competitiveness within Europe’s aviation landscape. “Germany has priced itself out of growth,” a Ryanair spokesperson said in a statement. “While other European markets have reduced aviation taxes to support recovery, Germany continues to impose high charges that discourage airlines from adding capacity.” Ryanair has reiterated that it will redirect aircraft and capacity to other European countries unless the German government acts to reduce its aviation levies and air traffic control fees. The carrier’s decision follows the closure of smaller German bases such as Dortmund, Dresden, and Leipzig, which remain excluded from the upcoming winter operations. National flag carrier Lufthansa is also taking significant measures to curb costs, planning to cut around 100 domestic flights per week this winter. The airline’s leadership has warned that high “location costs” including fuel surcharges, airport fees, and environmental levies are eroding profitability on short-haul routes. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr has publicly voiced concerns over Germany’s aviation competitiveness, warning that continued cost escalation could force deeper reductions in the carrier’s domestic schedule by next summer. “Our cost base in Germany is among the highest in Europe. Without structural reforms, airlines will inevitably reconsider the scale of their operations here,” Spohr said. Lufthansa’s adjustments are part of a wider trend of airlines reassessing capacity deployment in high-cost markets, as European carriers continue to battle inflationary pressures and environmental surcharges. The dual retrenchment by Lufthansa and Ryanair has reignited debate over Germany’s aviation tax policy. Industry observers note that Berlin’s failure to deliver on its earlier pledge to lower aviation taxes has worsened the country’s cost environment. Germany’s aviation tax, introduced to curb emissions and raise revenue, remains among the highest in Europe. Analysts warn that these levies combined with rising fuel costs and environmental compliance expenses risk undermining the post-pandemic recovery of the country’s aviation sector. Ryanair’s capacity reduction alone accounts for nearly 10% of its total planned German seat supply this winter, a significant setback for airports already struggling with traffic stagnation.

Lufthansa, Ryanair Cut German Flights Amid Rising Aviation Taxes And Costs

Berlin, Germany: Two of Europe’s leading carriers Lufthansa and Ryanair are scaling back their operations in Germany, citing rising aviation

Frankfurt, Germany: Lufthansa Group announced on Monday that it plans to eliminate around 4,000 administrative positions by 2030 as part of a wider restructuring strategy aimed at boosting profitability and efficiency through automation, artificial intelligence, and streamlined operations. In recent years, the airline has faced challenges in controlling costs and driving growth amid labor issues. Last year, it issued two profit warnings and the 8% margin target was postponed to 2028–2030. The job reductions will primarily affect back-office, headquarters, and shared service roles in Germany. Flight operations, including pilots and cabin crew, are not expected to be impacted. The decision was unveiled during Lufthansa’s Capital Markets Day, the airline’s first in six years where executives presented new financial targets. The group now aims for an adjusted operating margin of 8 to 10 percent by 2028, annual free cash flow exceeding €2.5 billion, and a 15 to 20 percent return on capital employed before taxes. Alongside workforce cuts, Lufthansa confirmed plans to modernize its fleet with the delivery of more than 230 new aircraft by the end of the decade, including about 100 long-haul planes. Management said the investments, combined with digitalization, will drive efficiency across its airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Eurowings. Chief Executive Carsten Spohr emphasized the need for structural change, noting that consolidation of overlapping functions and the use of digital tools will “make the group more competitive and resilient.” The announcement sparked criticism from German labor unions. Representatives from Ver.di, one of the country’s unions, warned of the social consequences of the cuts and demanded government oversight. Markets, however, reacted positively. Lufthansa’s shares rose nearly 2 percent following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the group’s ability to deliver stronger returns. The company stressed that the job reductions will be gradual and spread over five years, easing the transition for employees and giving time to implement retraining or redeployment measures. On the contrary, earlier this year, Lufthansa had announced plans to hire approximately 10,000 new employees throughout 2025. The recruitment drive covered a wide range of roles, including more than 2,000 flight attendants, 1,400 ground operations staff, 1,300 technical experts, 1,200 administrative roles, and around 800 pilot positions. A significant portion of these new jobs was expected to be located in Germany, reflecting Lufthansa’s efforts to strengthen its domestic operations. Among its subsidiaries, Lufthansa Technik alone planned to add over 2,000 staff, while Austrian Airlines and Eurowings each aimed to hire roughly 700 employees. The group reported that in 2024 it had onboarded more than 13,000 new employees and, over a three-year period, had hired over 30,000 staff globally.
