New Delhi, India: India’s largest airline IndiGo has announced a significant revision of pilot allowances, effective January 1, 2026, in an effort to address morale issues, strengthen retention and ensure smoother flight operations following widespread cancellations earlier this month. The allowance revisions were communicated in an internal email sent to IndiGo’s pilots by Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President for Flight Operations, outlining the updated pay and allowance structure. It increases key components of pilot compensation across a range of duty types, including domestic layovers, deadhead travel, night flying, transit stops and tail‑swap operations. Under the revised structure: Domestic layover allowances for stays between 10:01 and 24 hours have been raised by about 50% captains will receive ₹3,000 (up from ₹2,000) and first officers ₹1,500 (up from ₹1,000). Deadhead travel allowances paid when pilots reposition as passengers have increased to ₹4,000 for captains and ₹2,000 for first officers. Night flying compensation has been standardised to a fixed payment of ₹2,000 per hour for captains and ₹1,000 for first officers. Tail‑swap allowance, a new category for duties involving a change of aircraft mid‑duty, has been introduced at ₹1,500 for captains and ₹750 for first officers. Transit allowances for extended ground halts beyond 90 minutes have also been adjusted upwards. The revisions come after a turbulent December, during which IndiGo cancelled thousands of flights, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded amid challenges in crew rostering under stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms. According to industry reports, the airline’s failure to sufficiently staff pilots in anticipation of the new regulations led to widespread operational disruptions. In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered a reduction in IndiGo’s winter schedule and has been engaged in ongoing regulatory oversight. IndiGo, which employs roughly 5,000 pilots and controls around 65% of India’s domestic market, has faced criticism from some pilot groups and aviation analysts for fatigue‑linked rostering pressures and competitive hiring practices by foreign carriers. While the airline has not publicly commented on the revisions, industry experts say the allowance uplift represents a strategic move to stabilise operations ahead of the peak travel season and improve pilot retention amid intensified competition. Regulatory sources indicated that the airline’s leadership has held dialogue with pilot representatives at several operational bases in recent weeks.

Istanbul, Turkey: A Singapore Airlines Airbus A350‑900 service scheduled to fly from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) faced multiple departure failures this week, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded and prompting questions about operational communication and passenger handling during prolonged irregular operations. The long‑haul flight, originally scheduled as SQ391 on December 12, 2025 at 1:15 pm local time, was unable to depart on three successive occasions due to a recurring technical issue identified during pre‑departure procedures. The aircraft eventually departed on December 14 at around 3 am under a revised flight number SQ9391, arriving in Singapore later that day. Shortly after pushback on the first departure attempt, the flight crew reported a problem with the aircraft’s flaps, a key flight control component. The aircraft returned to the gate. All 229 passengers remained on board for nearly four hours as engineers conducted inspections and attempted repairs. During this time, food and beverages were provided. Efforts to resolve the fault extended beyond the initial delay, and the airline determined that additional time was needed for technical support and parts before safe continuation of service. Subsequent departure times were announced and later revised, resulting in three failed attempts before the aircraft was finally released. Passengers recounted frustrations over the prolonged delays and changing departure times. Some criticised the clarity and frequency of updates provided by airline staff at the airport. Although meal vouchers and hotel accommodation options were offered, several travellers reported challenges covering additional incidental expenses such as medication and extra meals during their extended stay in Istanbul. In response to media queries, a Singapore Airlines spokesperson reiterated that the safety of customers and crew remained the airline’s priority throughout the disruption, and offered apologies to affected travellers. The carrier also noted that assistance was provided in rebooking connecting flights at the final destination. In a separate incident, a Singapore Airlines long‑haul flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) carrying 151 passengers was delayed for more than 48 hours after its original departure on December 14, 2025, was postponed due to adverse winter weather and a runway closure for de‑icing. The flight, originally designated SQ21, was rescheduled and renumbered as SQ9021, but was delayed again due to an airport baggage handling system fault and a technical issue with the aircraft’s nose wheel, forcing further disruptions. The rescheduled service was subsequently planned to depart on December 16 and arrive in Singapore on December 17. Singapore Airlines, consistently ranked among the world’s top carriers, has reaffirmed its commitment to safety and customer care in its ongoing response to operational disruptions. The airline continues to support affected customers, reaffirming that technical rectification and passenger welfare are core priorities during irregular operations.

Sydney, Australia: On Monday, September 8, 2025, British Airways flight BA16, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operating from Sydney to Singapore, made an emergency return to Sydney Airport after the crew issued a mayday call roughly one hour into the flight. The aircraft landed safely, with all passengers disembarking unharmed. The flight had departed Sydney at 2:40 PM local time. Around an hour into the journey, the crew reported a strong fuel smell in the cockpit. “Mayday Speed Bird 16. I’m just about to come fully established on 34 left. We will have to stop for a minute after landing,” the pilot communicated during a call to air traffic control. In response, a Sydney Airport controller acknowledged, saying, “G’day, copy, mayday acknowledged.” Passengers described a tense and unsettling experience. Screens and cabin lights began switching off mid-flight, heightening anxiety among travelers. Mandy Ramson, a passenger on board, told 7NEWS: “We heard the captain say we need a senior crew member to come to the cockpit now, and then we started thinking there’s something wrong. About 10 minutes later, we were told, ‘we’re going to have to turn around because they smelt fuel in the cockpit.’ It was scary, it was really scary.” Upon returning, the aircraft touched down safely at 3:56 PM, where it was met by emergency services, including up to eight fire trucks, as a precaution. Sydney Airport operations continued without disruption, and no injuries were reported. British Airways confirmed that the return to Sydney was a precautionary measure following a reported technical issue.
