Riga, Latvia: In a bold growth push, Latvian carrier airBaltic has opened up to 200 Junior Cabin Crew vacancies across its Baltic bases in Riga (Latvia), Tallinn (Estonia) and Vilnius (Lithuania). The surge in hiring spans not just cabin crew, but also other departments pilots, technical staff, commercial, operational, and support teams. The airline aims to have the new staff in place by the 2026 summer season to support its expanding operations and route network. According to airBaltic’s official announcement, candidates do not need prior cabin-crew experience to apply. All selected applicants will undergo fully paid training, culminating in a “Cabin Crew certificate” in about two months. The airline emphasizes that the role offers flexible scheduling, making it suitable even for students or those seeking a career change. In addition to on-the-job duties, successful candidates will enjoy a dynamic multicultural work environment, frequent travel opportunities, and a clearly defined path for career progression within the airline. According to the latest recruitment data: Positions are distributed across the three Baltic capitals: Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius. In Vilnius, the advertised monthly salary (before taxes) for junior cabin crew starts in the range of €1,100 to €1,700. Overall, the airline currently employs nearly 3,000 professionals and plans to scale up significantly through this hiring wave. In addition, airBaltic recently opened new crew bases in Tallinn and Vilnius, further underlining the company’s intent to decentralize operations across multiple Baltic hubs. The recruitment drive comes as airBaltic continues to grow its fleet and expand its flight network across Europe and beyond. Marina Volkova Head of Talent Acquisition & Development at airBaltic commented on the effort, saying, “As we prepare for the upcoming summer season and continue expanding our fleet, we are opening up to 200 Junior Cabin Crew vacancies across the Baltic region.” Volkova added that the airline seeks both fresh entrants and those considering a career change, offering a fully funded start, training, and a support structure for professional growth. Candidates selected as cabin crew will be entrusted with typical cabin-crew duties: onboard safety, customer care, sales (where applicable), and ensuring smooth operations for daily flights. They will be frontline representatives of the airline, responsible for delivering airBaltic’s service standards. Given the airline’s multi-national network and growing destination list, successful applicants can expect exposure to a wide variety of flight routes, cultures, and international work environment. Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The Middle East is set for one of the fastest expansions in global aviation, with Airbus projecting more than 265,000 new jobs across the sector over the next 20 years. The forecast, released ahead of the Dubai Airshow cycle, highlights the region’s accelerating demand for pilots, technicians, and cabin crew as airlines expand fleets and long-haul networks. Airbus estimates the need for 69,000 pilots, 64,000 aircraft technicians, and almost 132,000 cabin crew by 2044. The hiring surge aligns with a major increase in aircraft operating in the region. The in-service fleet, currently around 1,480 aircraft, is expected to grow to 3,700 within two decades. Wide-body aircraft will make up 42% of future fleet requirements, more than double the global average. The commercial aviation services market, covering maintenance, training, operations, and air traffic management, is projected to reach US$ 30 billion over the same period. Passenger traffic is forecast to grow at a 4.4% compound annual rate, driven by population growth, expanding tourism, and rising regional trade. Airbus also notes that the Middle East’s population is expected to increase by nearly 240 million people by 2044, further boosting air-travel demand. Airbus executives say the region’s geographic advantage and growing airline networks position it as a future global connector. “The Middle East is becoming the long-haul hub now and into the future,” said Gabriel Semelas, the company’s president for Africa and the Middle East, citing the strong long-range fleet requirements throughout the Gulf. Independent economic studies also highlight how central aviation has become to the region’s future. An Oxford Economics report commissioned by Emirates Group and Dubai Airports shows the sector supported 631,000 jobs in Dubai in 2023 and contributed AED 137 billion to the emirate’s GDP. By 2030, aviation-linked employment is expected to rise to 816,000 jobs, representing nearly one in four positions in Dubai. The ongoing expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to generate 132,000 additional jobs and contribute more than AED 6.1 billion to Dubai’s GDP by the end of the decade. Training academies, maintenance providers, and regulatory authorities will need to scale rapidly to match the demand. The region’s major carriers including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Saudia have already begun large recruitment drives, signalling strong near-term hiring momentum even before long-term growth peaks. The Airbus forecast signals a sustained phase of expansion for Middle Eastern aviation, positioning the region as a global employment engine and one of the most influential long-range aviation markets worldwide.

Frankfurt, Germany: Lufthansa Group announced on Monday that it plans to eliminate around 4,000 administrative positions by 2030 as part of a wider restructuring strategy aimed at boosting profitability and efficiency through automation, artificial intelligence, and streamlined operations. In recent years, the airline has faced challenges in controlling costs and driving growth amid labor issues. Last year, it issued two profit warnings and the 8% margin target was postponed to 2028–2030. The job reductions will primarily affect back-office, headquarters, and shared service roles in Germany. Flight operations, including pilots and cabin crew, are not expected to be impacted. The decision was unveiled during Lufthansa’s Capital Markets Day, the airline’s first in six years where executives presented new financial targets. The group now aims for an adjusted operating margin of 8 to 10 percent by 2028, annual free cash flow exceeding €2.5 billion, and a 15 to 20 percent return on capital employed before taxes. Alongside workforce cuts, Lufthansa confirmed plans to modernize its fleet with the delivery of more than 230 new aircraft by the end of the decade, including about 100 long-haul planes. Management said the investments, combined with digitalization, will drive efficiency across its airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Eurowings. Chief Executive Carsten Spohr emphasized the need for structural change, noting that consolidation of overlapping functions and the use of digital tools will “make the group more competitive and resilient.” The announcement sparked criticism from German labor unions. Representatives from Ver.di, one of the country’s unions, warned of the social consequences of the cuts and demanded government oversight. Markets, however, reacted positively. Lufthansa’s shares rose nearly 2 percent following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the group’s ability to deliver stronger returns. The company stressed that the job reductions will be gradual and spread over five years, easing the transition for employees and giving time to implement retraining or redeployment measures. On the contrary, earlier this year, Lufthansa had announced plans to hire approximately 10,000 new employees throughout 2025. The recruitment drive covered a wide range of roles, including more than 2,000 flight attendants, 1,400 ground operations staff, 1,300 technical experts, 1,200 administrative roles, and around 800 pilot positions. A significant portion of these new jobs was expected to be located in Germany, reflecting Lufthansa’s efforts to strengthen its domestic operations. Among its subsidiaries, Lufthansa Technik alone planned to add over 2,000 staff, while Austrian Airlines and Eurowings each aimed to hire roughly 700 employees. The group reported that in 2024 it had onboarded more than 13,000 new employees and, over a three-year period, had hired over 30,000 staff globally.
