Montreal, Canada: Global air transport is positioned for a historic expansion in 2026, with passenger volumes and airline revenues reaching new heights even as supply chain constraints and cost pressures persist, according to the latest forecasts from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and related industry reporting. Airlines worldwide are expected to carry approximately 5.2 billion passengers in 2026, marking a continued recovery from the pandemic era and outpacing previous demand projections, the industry body and multiple analysts report. The global airline industry’s combined net profit is forecast at around US$41 billion in 2026, an increase from roughly US$39.5 billion in 2025, though profit margins are expected to remain thin by historical standards. “This growth is extremely welcome considering the headwinds that the industry faces including rising costs from supply chain bottlenecks, geopolitical conflict, sluggish global trade and increasing regulatory burdens,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General, in the association’s latest outlook. Industry revenues are forecast to exceed US$1 trillion in 2026, broadening the sector’s economic footprint and anchoring the recovery in passenger demand. Revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) are expected to expand by around 4.9 percent, driven by continued travel appetite in key markets across Asia Pacific, the Middle East and the Americas. Seat load factors, a key measure of airline efficiency, are projected to rise to record levels of nearly 84 percent, indicating strong capacity utilization even as aircraft availability tightens. The Middle East is projected to outpace all regions in profitability in 2026, with carriers delivering the highest net profit margin (about 9.3 percent) and the highest profit per passenger (approximately US$28.6). This performance is attributed to strategic investment, supportive policy frameworks and the region’s role as a global connecting hub. However, IATA officials caution that profit strength is uneven, with some carriers still under pressure from geopolitical instability, blocked funds and uneven infrastructure development. Despite robust demand, airlines face persistent supply chain disruptions that continue to constrain aircraft deliveries and fleet renewal efforts. Production backlogs for new aircraft and engines remain at historic highs, creating a structural mismatch between airline requirements and manufacturing capacity that is unlikely to normalise before the early 2030s. Industry analysts warn that these bottlenecks including delays in delivery slots and parts shortages not only limit capacity growth but also contribute to rising maintenance costs and an aging global fleet. While aggregate profits are climbing, the net profit margin is expected to hover around 3.9 percent in 2026, modest by historical standards and reflective of sustained cost pressures. Factors such as labour costs, regulatory compliance, fuel price volatility and infrastructure charges continue to weigh on airline financials. Analysts also note that cargo operations remain resilient, though growth in cargo tonne kilometres is forecast to be more moderate compared with pre-pandemic peaks. Industry forecasts underscore a cautiously optimistic outlook for global aviation: strong passenger demand and revenue growth amid ongoing structural challenges. As airlines prepare for operational and financial execution in 2026, capacity management, supply chain resolves, and regional market dynamics will likely determine which carriers sustain profitability and growth.

Hanoi, Vietnam: Vietnam’s aviation industry is solidly recovering from the pandemic downturn, with sustained increases in passenger and cargo traffic this year and projections pointing toward double-digit growth in 2026. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) projects that total passenger throughput for 2025 will reach approximately 84 million, an 11.4% rise over 2024, while air cargo is expected to finish the year at around 1.4 million tonnes. Domestic and international travel continue to expand, reflecting strengthening demand both within Vietnam and from abroad. Passenger volume figures show significant gains across the year: data from the first nine months of 2025 estimate about 64.1 million passengers transported and 1.1 million tonnes of cargo, up 10.7% and 18.7% year-on-year, respectively. The recovery is consistent with earlier data showing a strong first half of the year, when total air passengers reached 41.3 million, recording 10% growth compared with the same period in 2024. Vietnam’s broader economic resilience bolsters aviation growth. Robust tourism demand and rising consumer travel have contributed to consistent increases in airline traffic. Analysts also note that the return of international markets including resumed flights to Russia and expanded Asian connections is supporting sustained expansion. Market forecasts suggest the sector’s long-term potential remains strong, with industry research forecasting overall passenger and cargo demand to continue rising through 2030. Vietnam’s position within the Southeast Asian aviation market, already among the fastest-growing in the region, is expected to strengthen further as international connectivity increases and infrastructure improves. Despite robust growth, the industry faces operational and capacity challenges. On-time performance and cancellations have drawn scrutiny due to schedule disruptions, while some airports operate beyond designed traffic capacity. Safety and security have also been highlighted as policy priorities. Recent directives from the Prime Minister’s office emphasize that aviation safety systems must meet stringent international standards amid rapid expansion. Building on 2025’s gains, market analysts and CAAV projections suggest that Vietnam’s aviation industry is poised for double-digit growth next year, with passenger numbers and cargo volumes set to expand further as international demand normalizes and new routes come online. London, United Kingdom: The UK aviation industry has reached new heights, with a record 81 million passengers traveling through its airports between April and June 2025, according to the latest report from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This marks the highest quarterly passenger total on record, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and contributing to a total of 141 million travelers in the first half of the year, a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The surge in passenger numbers is attributed to a combination of factors, including pent-up demand for travel, increased consumer confidence, and the easing of global travel restrictions. Europe remained the most popular international region for UK travelers, with destinations such as Dublin, Amsterdam, Palma de Mallorca, and Alicante seeing significant traffic. Notably, airports in the north of England, including Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, and Leeds Bradford, collectively welcomed nearly 750,000 additional passengers, highlighting the regional strength of the aviation sector. In addition to the record passenger numbers, the industry has demonstrated notable improvements in operational efficiency. Flight punctuality has seen a significant boost, with 75% of flights departing on time a marked increase of 8 percentage points compared to the same period in 2024. April was particularly strong, with 82% of flights departing as scheduled. Cargo operations have also rebounded, with nearly 700,000 tonnes of goods handled at UK airports between April and June. This represents a 6% year-on-year increase, surpassing pre-pandemic volumes. Key international cargo routes included Dubai, New York, Doha, and Leipzig, with notable growth in deliveries to Asian markets, including a 61% increase to Delhi and a 41% rise to Mumbai. Looking ahead, the CAA anticipates continued growth during the peak summer travel season, with expectations for another record-breaking quarter.
