According to information shared by the Minister on social media platform X, the meeting focused on deepening India’s integration into global aviation value chains. The discussions covered expanding Airbus sourcing from India, strengthening local manufacturing capabilities, improving supply chain linkages, and enhancing India’s role in aerospace production networks as global demand for aircraft continues to rise. A key part of the engagement also revolved around developing India’s Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) ecosystem, alongside skill development initiatives aimed at building a highly trained aerospace workforce. Both sides discussed how these areas can collectively strengthen India’s industrial base and support its ambition of becoming a major aviation manufacturing and services hub. Airbus India and South Asia President and Managing Director Jurgen Westermeier has earlier highlighted the strategic importance of policy clarity and global trade frameworks in strengthening aerospace cooperation. Welcoming the announcement of a framework for an interim agreement between India and the United States on reciprocal trade, he said the initiative goes beyond tariff reduction and carries broader industrial implications. “The announcement of a framework for an interim agreement between India and the United States on reciprocal, mutually beneficial trade is a welcome development. Emphasising the importance of policy stability in capital-intensive industries like aviation, he added that predictability in tariffs and long-term policy direction is essential for sustained sectoral growth. “For capital-intensive sectors such as aerospace manufacturing, certainty in tariffs and predictability in policy are critical for sustained growth. I hope that reduced tariffs will allow Indian suppliers to integrate more seamlessly into the global aerospace supply chain,” Westermeier had stated. The discussions come at a time when India is actively working to expand its manufacturing footprint in high-value sectors and attract deeper global aerospace investment. Airbus, which already maintains a strong presence in India’s civil aviation market, continues to explore opportunities to increase local sourcing and industrial collaboration as airline fleet expansion accelerates in the country. New Delhi, India: Akasa Air has formally joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA), marking a significant milestone for the young Indian carrier and strengthening its standing within the global aviation ecosystem. With this development, Akasa Air becomes the fifth Indian airline to be part of IATA, joining Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express, and SpiceJet. The membership places the airline among more than 360 carriers worldwide that together account for over 80 percent of global air traffic. Akasa Air’s inclusion follows the successful completion of the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), a globally recognised safety and operational assessment programme that is a mandatory requirement for IATA membership. The audit evaluates an airline’s flight operations, maintenance systems, safety management, security, and organisational processes against international standards. According to IATA’s official member directory, Akasa Air operating under SNV Aviation Private Limited is now listed as an IATA member airline in the Asia-Pacific region. Industry experts view the development as a key step in Akasa Air’s international integration, particularly as the airline expands overseas operations and explores deeper cooperation with global carriers. IATA membership provides access to industry-standard settlement systems, safety data sharing, regulatory coordination platforms, and global best practices. Akasa Air founded in 2020 by Vinay Dube and in substantial backing of the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, the renowned Indian investor widely referred to as the “Big Bull” of the stock market. Akasa Air commenced commercial operations in August 2022 and operates a fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The airline serves a growing domestic network and has gradually expanded international services since 2024. Company leadership has previously outlined long-term ambitions to scale fleet size and rank among the world’s leading airlines over the next decade. New Delhi, India: India’s aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) industry is projected to grow into a $4 billion market by 2031, supported by regulatory reforms, rising aircraft inductions and increasing participation from global aviation companies, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu said. The minister made the remarks while addressing an aviation industry gathering, where he outlined the government’s strategy to transform India into a competitive global MRO destination and curb the country’s heavy reliance on overseas maintenance facilities. At present, nearly nine out of ten Indian-registered aircraft are maintained abroad, primarily due to cost disadvantages and regulatory complexities. This has resulted in substantial foreign exchange outflows, estimated by industry bodies at over $1.5 billion annually. Officials believe that strengthening domestic MRO capacity can reverse this trend while improving operational efficiency for Indian airlines. Naidu said the government has undertaken a series of policy measures to improve the sector’s viability, most notably the reduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on MRO services from 18 per cent to 5 per cent, placing India on a more level footing with established MRO hubs in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. “These reforms are intended to create a stable, predictable and investor-friendly environment,” the minister said, adding that lower taxation and streamlined compliance procedures have already begun to attract international players. The inauguration of new facilities, including Safran Aircraft Engine Services India, has been cited by the ministry as a key milestone in building a strong MRO ecosystem. The Safran facility is expected to support next-generation aircraft engines and contribute to skill development, technology transfer and local employment. India’s commercial aviation sector continues to expand rapidly. The country is currently the third-largest domestic aviation market globally, and its fleet size is expected to grow sharply over the next decade. Industry projections suggest that Indian airlines could be operating more than 1,500 aircraft by the early 2030s, significantly increasing demand for routine maintenance, heavy checks and engine overhauls. Government officials say a robust MRO sector will help airlines reduce aircraft downtime, lower operating costs and improve fleet availability. The sector is also expected to generate high-skilled jobs in engineering, tooling, quality assurance and aviation safety, while supporting allied industries such as component manufacturing and logistics. Naidu reiterated that developing domestic MRO capabilities aligns with the government’s broader “Make in India” and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. By retaining maintenance work within the country, India aims to strengthen its position across the global aviation value chain and reduce long-term dependence on foreign service providers. The ministry has indicated that further policy fine-tuning and infrastructure development, particularly at major airports and upcoming aviation hubs, will continue as part of efforts to sustain long-term growth in the sector.
