Montreal, Canada: Airports Council International (ACI) World has called for a comprehensive overhaul of global aviation policy frameworks, warning that outdated regulatory systems could limit the industry’s ability to manage rising demand, expand infrastructure, and meet long-term sustainability targets. The organisation formally launched its Policy Agenda 2030, positioning it as a strategic roadmap to modernise aviation governance and strengthen the role of airports in global economic development. ACI World said the aviation sector is entering a phase of sustained demand growth, but regulatory and infrastructure systems have not evolved at the same pace. It highlighted that increasing passenger volumes, geopolitical uncertainty, climate pressures, and operational constraints are creating a need for coordinated policy reform at the global level. The organisation stressed that without timely intervention, capacity bottlenecks and inefficiencies could emerge across major airport systems worldwide. At the core of the Policy Agenda 2030 is a call to reposition airports as strategic economic assets rather than purely infrastructure operators. ACI World emphasised that airports play a critical role in driving trade, tourism, investment, and employment, and therefore require governance models that reflect their broader economic importance. The organisation urged governments to adopt policies that enable airports to operate with greater flexibility, competitiveness, and financial sustainability. The framework also places strong focus on airport capacity expansion and operational efficiency. ACI World has called for modernised slot allocation systems, enhanced infrastructure development, and improved passenger facilitation processes to manage future traffic growth. It further highlighted the importance of workforce development and operational readiness as key enablers of efficient airport performance in the coming decade. Safety and security remain central to the agenda, with ACI World advocating for risk-based and globally harmonised regulatory frameworks. The organisation said aviation safety systems must continue to evolve in response to emerging operational challenges while maintaining high international standards and improving efficiency across airport operations. Sustainability is another major pillar of the Policy Agenda 2030. ACI World stressed the need for coordinated global action to address aviation emissions and climate resilience. It called for policies that support decarbonisation while ensuring airports can continue to expand capacity to meet growing demand. The organisation highlighted the role of airports as key contributors to climate action through infrastructure adaptation and long-term environmental planning. ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci underscored that aviation policy must evolve in line with industry growth, stating that airports should be recognised as strategic national infrastructure assets. He noted that enabling policy environments are essential for airports to deliver increased connectivity, economic value, and sustainable development outcomes. The Policy Agenda 2030 aligns with ACI World’s broader strategic direction for 2025–2030 and complements global aviation planning frameworks, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) long-term strategy toward 2050. The organisation said coordinated action between governments, regulators, and industry stakeholders will be critical to ensuring the aviation sector can support future economic growth and global connectivity.

Muan County, South Korea: South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has formally admitted that a key navigation structure at Muan International Airport did not meet safety standards and likely contributed to the severity of Jeju Air Flight 2216 crash flying from Bangkok to Muan International Airport in South Korea, on December 29, 2024, during an emergency landing after suspected landing gear issues. The aircraft belly‑landed, skidded off the runway, and collided with a concrete embankment, which caused a catastrophic explosion and contributed to the high fatality count. Of the 181 people on board 175 passengers and 6 crew 179 were killed, with only two flight attendants surviving with serious injuries. Earlier South Korea’s parliament had approved an independent investigation into the December 2024 Jeju Air crash that killed 179 people, responding to delays and criticism of the official probe. Under the new law passed on December 22, 2025, an 18‑member cross‑party panel will examine all aspects of the disaster including potential mechanical issues, bird‑strike risk, the aircraft’s final moments, and whether government agencies tried to conceal findings by the main investigation body. This independent review follows growing pressure from victims’ families and lawmakers for greater transparency and credibility in the ongoing examination of the country’s deadliest aviation accident. The aircraft, Jeju Air Flight 2216, a Boeing 737-800 arriving from Bangkok, belly-landed on the runway after suffering a suspected bird strike that disabled its landing gear. It then overran the runway and struck a concrete mound supporting the localizer system, a navigation aid used for precision approaches triggering a catastrophic explosion. Only two cabin crew members survived. Opposition lawmaker Kim Eun-hye released documents from a government-commissioned analysis indicating that the concrete mound should have been designed to be fragile, able to break easily upon impact given its proximity (less than 240 m) to the runway end. Under airport safety operation standards, such structures must be breakable if situated within this safety area to minimize impact forces in runway overruns. The ministry acknowledged that during a 2020 upgrade project, the mound was not modified to meet these criteria. Simulations by the Korean Society of Computational Structural Engineering, commissioned by the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, found that without the rigid concrete mound the aircraft could have slid to a stop after sliding beyond the runway without sustaining fatal structural damage. A frangible design would similarly have greatly reduced impact severity, possibly allowing the aircraft to breach the perimeter fence and slide into open terrain with no serious injuries expected. The ministry’s admission has reignited criticism from politicians and victim families, with some lawmakers arguing the disaster was largely preventable and that longstanding regulatory oversights were to blame. Opposition figures described the embankment as a “mound of death” and alleged that officials attempted to suppress or delay release of critical safety findings. In parliament, a special committee is examining the crash and broader aviation safety protocols. Rep. Kim Eun-hye has accused the government of negligence dating back decades, asserting that the structure violated both domestic and international safety practices. Families of the victims are demanding greater transparency and accountability. While the simulation report has heightened focus on the airport structure, a final official investigation by the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board is still pending. Prosecutors and police have separately searched offices of Jeju Air and airport operators for documents related to aircraft operations and runway safety features. Experts continue to examine multiple factors in the crash, including whether the aircraft’s engines were functioning at impact and whether procedural or emergency response issues contributed to the outcome. In the aftermath of the crash, the Transport Ministry and airport authorities have pledged to review and upgrade runway safety areas nationwide, ensuring that navigational aids and nearby structures comply with both domestic regulations and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. Reports indicate plans to remove the concrete embankment at Muan and replace it with breakaway installations at Muan and other regional airports.

Built at a cost of around Rs 19,650 crore under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group, the airport is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and enhance the city’s position as a global aviation hub. Phase 1 of NMIA features Terminal 1 and Runway 1, equipped with 10 bus gates and 29 aero bridges. The facility is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 90 million in future phases. Its lotus-inspired architecture includes 12 sculptural columns resembling petals and 17 mega columns supporting the roof, reflecting India’s cultural heritage. Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, about 37 kilometers from South Mumbai, NMIA is integrated with multimodal transport options, including metro, roadways, and public transport systems, ensuring seamless connectivity. The airport also hosts India’s largest aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, positioning it as a major cargo and logistics hub. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the inauguration ceremony, alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, highlighting the national importance of the project. Chief Minister Fadnavis announced that the first ticket issued from the airport would bear the name of the late D.B. Patil, a prominent farmer leader and legislator. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in December 2025. NMIA’s advanced facilities, strategic location, and integration with multimodal transport networks are set to transform Mumbai’s aviation landscape. In addition, the 'Mumbai One' app was launched to enhance urban mobility. The platform integrates services from 11 public transport operators across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, allowing seamless travel on trains, metros, buses, monorails, and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), which serves around 200,000 passengers daily.
