AircraftMalfunction

Delhi, India: An Air India Boeing 777-300ER operating flight AI173 from Delhi to San Francisco was forced to return to Delhi after suffering a technical malfunction mid-flight, remaining airborne for more than eight hours before landing safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The incident occurred on May 27 and involved approximately 230 passengers onboard the long-haul flight bound for the United States. According to airline officials and flight-tracking data, the aircraft had already spent over three hours in the air and entered Chinese airspace when the crew decided to discontinue the journey and return to Delhi in accordance with safety procedures. Initial reports stated that the issue involved the aircraft’s Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), a critical airborne safety system designed to prevent mid-air collisions by enabling aircraft to electronically detect and communicate with nearby traffic. The system operates independently of ground-based air traffic control and is considered mandatory for certain long-haul international operations, including trans-Pacific and North Atlantic routes. While Air India did not officially disclose the exact nature of the malfunction in its initial public statement, it is suspected that the aircraft experienced problems linked to the TCAS equipment during the flight. Some aviation reports and social media aviation monitoring pages further claimed that both TCAS channels onboard the aircraft became unavailable, though the airline has not publicly confirmed those specific details. Flight-tracking platforms showed the Boeing 777-300ER reversing course while over Chinese airspace before commencing the lengthy return sector to Delhi. Due to the aircraft’s weight, fuel load, and operational requirements for a safe landing, the jet remained airborne for several additional hours before touchdown. Air India confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and would undergo a detailed technical inspection in line with the carrier’s maintenance and safety protocols. The airline also stated that alternative arrangements were made for affected passengers, including hotel accommodation, refreshments, rebooking support, and rescheduling options. “The aircraft landed safely and will undergo technical inspection in line with Air India’s safety standards,” the airline said in its statement while expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers. No injuries were reported during the incident, and passengers were safely deboarded after the aircraft’s arrival back in Delhi.

Athens, Greece: A Lufthansa Airbus A321neo operating flight LH1753 from Athens to Munich was forced to return shortly after departure following an onboard technical warning that triggered an emergency response and passenger evacuation at Athens International Airport. The aircraft departed from Athens on May 11 but crews soon received a warning indication linked to the aircraft’s Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) system. Several reports initially described the situation as a possible engine or fire alert, while Lufthansa later clarified that the cockpit had received a malfunction indication and the crew followed standard emergency procedures. The Airbus A321neo safely returned to Athens after remaining airborne for only a short period. Following landing, emergency services surrounded the aircraft as it taxied on the airport surface. Cabin crew subsequently initiated a full emergency evacuation using inflatable slides after passengers and crew reportedly noticed a strong odor in the rear section of the cabin. Lufthansa confirmed that 177 passengers and seven crew members were onboard the aircraft during the incident. The airline statements indicated that three passengers sustained minor injuries during the slide evacuation and received medical attention. No serious injuries were reported. Several eyewitness accounts described scenes of panic and confusion during the evacuation, with passengers rapidly exiting the aircraft under crew instructions. Videos and photographs circulating on social media showed emergency responders positioned around the aircraft while slides remained deployed. Lufthansa stated that the crew declared an emergency in accordance with established safety procedures to ensure priority handling for the aircraft’s return to Athens. The airline also noted that the evacuation was conducted as a precautionary measure after the odor was detected in the aft cabin area. Airport operations at Athens continued normally following the incident, while technical inspections of the aircraft were initiated. Authorities and the airline are continuing to assess the exact cause of the malfunction indication.

Lufthansa Returns To Athens Following Technical Alert, Passengers Evacuated Safely

London, United Kingdom: A British Airways Airbus A380 operating flight BA285 en route from London Heathrow to San Francisco was forced to turn back to the UK after the crew identified a technical issue mid-flight, authorities and flight tracking data confirm. The double-deck superjumbo, registered as G-XLEK, departed Heathrow at approximately 11:43 GMT on Wednesday for the scheduled transatlantic service. Around four hours into the planned 10-hour journey, the flight began holding over northern UK airspace near Scotland and released fuel over a remote area off the west coast, a standard aviation practice to safely reduce landing weight. Flight tracking services showed BA285 circling at multiple flight levels for more than an hour before crews initiated the return to Heathrow. During this period the aircraft also became one of the most-tracked flights globally on FlightRadar24, highlighting the unusual nature of the diversion. British Airways subsequently confirmed the aircraft touched back down at Heathrow later the same day without declaring an emergency. In a statement to media, the airline said the diversion was due to a technical issue with the aircraft’s communication system and stressed that all on board landed safely with no injuries reported. Passengers affected by the disruption are being assisted with rebooking and ground support. The airline has apologised to customers for the inconvenience and encouraged travellers to check flight status information via official channels. A few days ago on December 8, a British Airways Airbus A320 flight from Edinburgh to London declared a mid-air emergency and returned safely to Edinburgh Airport earlier this week, after pilots reported a landing gear malfunction shortly after departure. Flight BA1443, bound for Heathrow, issued the internationally recognised 7700 emergency squawk code minutes after takeoff when the aircraft’s landing gear failed to retract properly, prompting the crew to hold over Stirling while troubleshooting before returning and landing without incident. The unscheduled return led Edinburgh Airport to temporarily suspend incoming and outgoing flights, with several services diverted to nearby airports during the disruption. No injuries were reported, and British Airways apologised to affected passengers as operations resumed after the technical issue was resolved.

California, United States: A scheduled trans‑Pacific trip by Delta Air Lines ended with an emergency diversion on the morning of November 19 after the crew detected a serious engine fault, authorities said. Flight DL 357 departed from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (Honolulu) at approximately 11 :10 p.m. HST the previous evening, bound for Salt Lake City International Airport. On board were 212 passengers and eight crew members. Around four hours into the flight, cruising at 35,000 feet over open ocean, the flight crew reported a fault in one of the aircraft’s two engines and initiated a shutdown of that engine as a precaution. The crew declared an emergency, activating transponder code 7700, to secure priority handling from air‑traffic control. With the fault confirmed and the aircraft operating on a single engine, the decision was made to divert to the nearest suitable airport. The crew elected to land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), where full emergency and rescue resources could be readily mobilised. The aircraft touched down on Runway 7R just prior to 7:00 a.m. PST and taxied to Gate 3A in Terminal 3. A full fire‑and‑rescue vehicle presence met the aircraft on arrival. Emergency responders carried out an external inspection. No visible structural damage or fire was reported, and all passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no injuries reported. In the aftermath, the Federal Aviation Administration﹙FAA) opened an investigation into the incident, examining the engine fault and reviewing whether maintenance or manufacturing factors played a role. Initial commentary suggests the fault is believed to stem from a mechanical anomaly rather than a maintenance‑shortcoming.
