Hanoi, Vietnam: Vietnam’s civil aviation sector has grounded 28 commercial aircraft as part of a broader global engine shortage that continues to disrupt airline fleet operations and maintenance timelines, industry sources and official data confirm. According to figures released by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) and industry reporting, the affected aircraft represent approximately 13.1 per cent of Vietnam’s operational commercial fleet, underscoring the depth of the ongoing supply chain challenge. The grounding stems from an extended recall and repair cycle for Pratt & Whitney’s PW1000G geared turbofan engines, which power a large portion of narrow‑body jets such as the Airbus A321neo. These engines have been subject to global maintenance and availability constraints, affecting multiple airlines worldwide. Of the aircraft currently out of service in Vietnam: 24 are Airbus A321neo aircraft Three are Airbus A350s One is an Airbus A320ceo Despite reduced fleet availability, carriers based in Vietnam have maintained core route operations, both domestically and internationally. Hanoi (HAN) and Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) continue to serve as major aviation hubs, linking close to 50 domestic routes across 20 airports. On the international front, Vietnamese airlines operate over 110 scheduled routes to more than two dozen countries, while foreign carriers maintain robust connections with Vietnam through over 140 services. Strong travel demand has bolstered resilience across the sector. Preliminary data estimates that international passenger numbers will reach around 46.9 million in 2025, marking roughly a 13.3 per cent increase compared with the previous year. Domestic passenger traffic also rose, with nearly 36.6 million travellers, reflecting sustained demand across segments. Total passenger traffic is seen growing by upwards of 6.7 per cent, while cargo volumes have climbed by 4.6 per cent over the same period. Vietnam’s aviation regulator and airline operators have initiated strategies to mitigate the impact of grounded aircraft, including fleet reallocation, schedule adjustments, and prioritising high‑demand routes. The CAAV has signalled that while the number of grounded jets has eased compared with earlier reports in 2025, supply chain recovery challenges persist. Looking ahead, Vietnam’s air transport sector is pursuing ambitious growth targets for 2026, aiming to accommodate up to 95 million passengers alongside expanded cargo operations, signalling confidence in long‑term traffic growth despite underlying technical challenges

Malé, Maldives: A Boeing 737 MAX 8 belonging to flydubai was damaged on 4 December 2025 after a ground‑services fuel truck struck the aircraft while it was parked at Velana International Airport (MLE), the airline confirmed. The aircraft registration A6‑FMM, operating flight FZ1025 from Dubai (DXB) had just arrived in Malé when the collision occurred on the apron during routine ground handling at approximately 08:50 local time. Reports indicate that the lower left‑hand winglet sustained damage. flydubai swiftly confirmed that all passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no injuries, fuel spillage or fire risk reported. The airline said affected travellers have been re‑accommodated on the next available flights while the damaged aircraft undergoes inspection and repair. The next scheduled leg, a flight from Malé to Colombo, was cancelled as a result of the incident. Authorities at the Maldives airport are expected to launch a formal investigation into the incident, focusing on apron safety protocols, ground‑handling procedures and vehicle movement controls around parked aircraft. flydubai reiterated that the “safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority at all times.” The aircraft will remain grounded until repairs are completed and regulatory standards for airworthiness are satisfied. On 28 November 2025 a Emirates Airbus A380‑842 at Manchester Airport (UK) was struck by a fuel‑truck while parked at a gate, during routine turnaround after arrival from Dubai. The collision damaged the cowling of the engine intake though there was no fuel leak, fire or injuries and forced cancellation of the return flight EK18 to Dubai. The aircraft remained grounded for inspections and repairs, and took off again on 30 November for flight EK20 to Dubai, signalling the damage was deemed repairable.

Manchester, United Kingdom: An Emirates Airbus A380 was grounded at Manchester Airport after a fuel truck struck the aircraft during ground operations, forcing the airline to cancel its scheduled return service to Dubai. The aircraft resumed operations after undergoing inspections and repairs, according to multiple aviation industry reports. The incident occurred on 28 November 2025, shortly after the superjumbo had arrived from Dubai operating flight EK17. While parked at the gate during turnaround preparations for its return flight EK18, a fuel truck made contact with one of the aircraft’s Rolls-Royce Trent engines, damaging the engine intake cowling. Initial reports confirmed that the aircraft, registered A6-EVP, sustained visible structural damage to the engine intake area. Despite the impact, no injuries were reported, and airport emergency protocols were not triggered. Due to the damage, Emirates cancelled flight EK18, leaving the aircraft grounded at Manchester for detailed technical inspection. Engineers assessed the aircraft on site to determine whether the damage extended beyond the intake structure. According to follow-up reports, Emirates completed essential repairs within two days. The A380 returned to active service on 30 November 2025, operating as flight EK20 from Manchester to Dubai, restoring normal wide-body operations on the route. Industry analysts noted that while the damage was limited, even minor engine intake deformation on an A380 requires immediate grounding due to strict safety regulations governing wide-body aircraft and high-bypass turbofans. As of the latest update, neither Emirates nor Manchester Airport has released an official statement confirming the root cause of the collision, and no public details have emerged regarding whether the fuel truck driver or ground-handling agency faced disciplinary action.
