The flight, cleared for departure from Runway 07R shortly after 21:00 UTC, taxied toward the runway but instead turned onto a parallel taxiway (identified as E1/V1) and began accelerating as if commencing a normal departure. Flightradar24 data shows the aircraft reached approximately 107 knots (around 198 km/h) before the crew recognised the error and aborted the takeoff, applying heavy braking and reverse thrust to bring the aircraft to a stop near the end of the taxiway and adjacent grassy area. All 135 passengers and crew disembarked safely, and there are no reported injuries. Airport fire and rescue services assisted passengers, who were later rebooked onto alternate flights to Copenhagen. SAS’s Head of Communications, Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, confirmed the incident to Danish broadcaster TV 2, stating that the flight from Brussels to Copenhagen was canceled due to an “irregularity.” She confirmed the airline’s account of an aborted departure and that passengers were accommodated on subsequent services. Belgian civil aviation authorities have initiated a formal investigation into the circumstances that led to the aircraft taking the wrong surface for departure. Investigators will review air traffic control communications, flight crew procedures, and airport surface signage and lighting, particularly given the complex layout of taxiways and runways at one of Europe’s busiest hubs. The Airbus aircraft, carrying 158 passengers, landed safely at Chennai International Airport with no reported injuries. The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo. Air India, in a statement, said that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

According to Hindustan Times, the pilots acted immediately, declared an emergency, and shut down the affected engine following standard safety protocols. They then requested priority landing clearance from Air Traffic Control and safely brought the aircraft back to Delhi, where fire and rescue teams were on standby as a precaution. Air India confirmed that all passengers and crew members disembarked safely. The airline arranged an alternate aircraft so passengers could continue their journey to Indore with minimal disruption. The affected aircraft has been grounded for a detailed engineering inspection to determine the cause of the fire indication. Air India also notified the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which is expected to review the incident as part of its routine safety oversight. The incident comes a month after an Air India Express flight bound to Doha from Calicut International Airport returned a couple of hours after take-off due to a technical fault.
