New Orleans, United States: The United States Coast Guard has officially suspended its search for two pilots missing after a small training aircraft crashed into Lake Pontchartrain earlier this week. Authorities ended active operations after nearly 45 hours of continuous air and water searches, covering more than 770 square miles, with no survivors found. Coast Guard officials said the decision was made after all reasonable search efforts were exhausted. The aircraft, a Cessna 172 operated by Apollo Flight Training of Gulfport, Mississippi, was conducting a training flight on Monday evening when it disappeared from radar about four miles from New Orleans Lakefront Airport. The flight was carrying a female instructor and a male student, working toward commercial aviation careers. According to company owner Michael Carastro, the instructor and student were both in their mid-20s. The instructor reportedly had accumulated around 1,300 flight hours roughly 200 hours shy of the threshold required to qualify for airline duty. The student had been pursuing his commercial and instrument rating. Carastro emphasised that the aircraft was regularly maintained and “up to regulation standards,” and said there was no distress call before contact was lost. He called the crash “an unbelievable tragedy,” noting that in his decades-long experience as a pilot and instructor, he had never before encountered anything like this. Search crews earlier recovered limited debris, including parts believed to be from the aircraft. No distress call was received before radar contact was lost. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate the crash once additional wreckage is located. The flight school has stated that the aircraft was properly maintained and had no known mechanical issues prior to departure.

Wellington, New Zealand: The New Zealand Government has introduced a new civil aviation rule aimed at reducing regulatory barriers and accelerating innovation in aerospace and advanced aviation technologies. The reform, described as a “global-first,” establishes regulatory sandboxes that allow companies and research organisations to test and refine aviation technologies with fewer approval requirements. Under the new framework, which comes into effect on 22 December 2025, organisations can make minor iterative changes to test systems without seeking fresh approvals from the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAA), provided the changes are not “substantial.” “This rule enables researchers and businesses to rapidly develop products without needing approval for small changes from the Civil Aviation Authority,” said Judith Collins, Minister for Space. “It provides clear pathways for the sector to test, trial, and grow while maintaining strong safety safeguards.” The reforms include amendments to drone regulations under Part 101, Operating Rules and Part 102 – Operator Certification. Some operations that previously required Part 102 certification, such as night flights or beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations in enclosed spaces, have been reclassified under Part 101, reducing regulatory complexity for low-risk activities. High-risk operations, including agricultural spraying and use of toxic agents, remain tightly controlled. A new rule, Part 107 – Research and Development Organisation Certification, formalises the sandbox approach, allowing research organisations to conduct experimental flights and technology trials without repeated regulatory approval. The new rules coincide with a permanent designation of special-use airspace (SUA) around the Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre near Christchurch. The SUA provides controlled airspace for experimental flights and test operations, activated on a per-need basis via NOTAMs, ensuring safety for other airspace users. Associate Transport Minister James Meager emphasised that the reforms modernise drone regulation, clarifying which low-risk operations can proceed without certification while keeping high-risk activities under strict oversight. The government says the changes signal a shift toward agile, innovation-friendly aviation governance. By reducing red tape, New Zealand positions itself as an attractive hub for aerospace R&D, including drones, autonomous aircraft, and electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) platforms. The regulatory overhaul builds on previous reforms under the Civil Aviation Act 2023, which updated rules around safety-sensitive personnel, authorisation, and airline transparency. The 2025 amendments are part of a broader Advanced Aviation initiative designed to support emerging aviation technologies while maintaining safety standards. For aerospace developers and investors, the sandbox framework and dedicated test airspace lower barriers for prototyping and experimentation, potentially accelerating time-to-market for innovative aviation solutions.

Vilnius, Lithuania: A regional jet operated by LOT Polish Airlines slid off the taxiway at Vilnius Airport today, forcing a temporary closure of the runway. All 63 passengers and four crew members on board disembarked safely, and no injuries have been reported, airport and airline officials confirmed. The aircraft involved was an Embraer E170 (registration SP-LDK), operating flight LO771 from Warsaw (Poland) to Vilnius (Lithuania). The flight landed at 13:43 local time (runway 01) without apparent issues. However, while taxiing toward the stand, the aircraft veered off the paved surface sliding onto the northern side of the airfield. Flight-tracking records show the plane had slowed to under 30 knots before the final taxiway turn but nevertheless “continued straight,” failing to make the turn and leaving the paved taxiway surface. Emergency services including fire and ground-handling teams responded immediately. Passengers disembarked via mobile stairs and were safely transported to the terminal. No injuries or medical emergencies have been reported. The airline confirmed the return flight, LO772 from Vilnius to Warsaw, has been cancelled pending technical inspection. LOT’s technical team, together with airport authorities, is assessing the aircraft and runway condition before any further operations resume. Following the incident, Vilnius Airport under the authority of Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) issued a NOTAM and closed its runway, suspending all arrivals and departures. Initial estimates suggested resumption by 17:00 local time, but the closure was later extended until at least 22:00 as recovery and inspection work continued. The closure has affected other scheduled flights. Passengers on flights due to depart or arrive during the shutdown were advised to contact their airlines for updated schedules. The incident occurred amid heavy, wet snowfall in Vilnius part of a broader winter weather surge across Lithuania. The buildup of snow and slush likely contributed to poor friction on taxiway/runway surfaces. Meteorological warnings had been issued earlier, cautioning travelers about hazardous conditions. While the exact cause has not yet been determined, local media and aviation-safety observers have highlighted slippery surfaces from snow and wet slush as plausible contributing factors. Immediately after the incident, the airport’s Emergency Commission convened a meeting. The gathering included the transport minister, justice-department officials, and LTOU management, signaling the start of a formal investigation. Authorities have yet to publish a preliminary report. The investigation is expected to examine multiple aspects including runway/taxiway surface condition, snow/ice removal procedures, friction measurements, aircraft handling during taxi, and possible human or technical errors.

transparent reporting and genuine implementation by airlines. New Delhi, India: In a new circular dated November 20, the DGCA has ordered stricter measures to address pilot fatigue, signalling a shift in the regulator’s approach from mere duty-hour limits to systemic fatigue-risk management. The DGCA initiated this crackdown after an audit of all scheduled airlines found that many operators were uncertain about the scope and content of “annual fatigue training.” Officials noted that fatigue-reports from crew members had not been reaching DGCA for several months, especially following the implementation of the first phase of revised duty and rest norms on July 1, 2025. Under the broader regulatory overhaul of 2025, the DGCA had already increased the minimum weekly rest period for pilots from 36 to 48 hours and set stricter limits on night duty, night-landing frequency and consecutive night flights. Still, regulators found that merely limiting duty-hours was not enough fatigue risk persisted when scheduling, rostering and crew-management systems failed to account for real-world operational stresses. The new circular aims to close that gap. The new measures mean that airlines must now build internal processes, not just comply with hours-based restrictions. Mandatory training for schedulers/dispatchers, a fatigue-reporting system, and a review committee these steps aim to ensure safety proactively, rather than reactive incident-based enforcement. For flight-crew, this may encourage a culture of openness about fatigue; the quarterly reporting system and independent review could reduce pressure on pilots to “tough it out.” For airlines, compliance will demand more than roster-planning operators will need to implement fatigue-awareness training, document reporting and follow-up, and coordinate across departments (scheduling, operations, HR). The November 25 circular builds on changes introduced earlier in 2025. In February, DGCA told the court that a revised framework for flight duty time limitation (FDTL) would be phased in from July 1, with full implementation by November 1. Under that framework: weekly rest was raised to 48 hours, night-duty definitions were revised, and caps placed on night landings and consecutive night flights. Simultaneously, DGCA released a draft “Fatigue Risk Management System” (FRMS), offering airlines a performance-based alternative to prescriptive duty-hour limits if operators can demonstrate through data that fatigue risk remains low. However, the regulator clarified that adoption of FRMS would remain optional; airlines may choose to continue under the standard duty-hour/rest rules.

Gulfport, United States: A small instructional aircraft from Apollo Flight Training and Aircraft Management plunged into Lake Pontchartrain Monday night after losing contact with air traffic controllers, authorities and the flight-school owner said. Two people on board a flight instructor and a student working toward their commercial license are presumed dead. The aircraft, a single-engine Cessna, departed from Million Air in Gulfport around 5:45 p.m. Monday, bound for a training approach to New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Radio contact was lost around 6:23–6:40 p.m., roughly four miles offshore over the lake. Search efforts by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), along with local agencies including wildlife and fisheries and parish sheriff’s offices, began shortly after the plane disappeared from radar. A MH-60 helicopter and a 29-foot Coast Guard boat were deployed from the New Orleans station. During the overnight search, crews recovered debris believed to belong to the aircraft including what appeared to be a seat cushion, and later what may have been part of the landing gear. Divers also reported a sonar hit in the search area, and teams observed water discoloration consistent with a crash. The owner of Apollo Flight Training, Michael Carastro, described the crash as “an unimaginable tragedy.” He confirmed the debris matched distinctive characteristics of their Cessna, and said based on maintenance and inspection records, mechanical failure appears unlikely. He also stated no distress call was received prior to the crash. Carastro noted the instructor aboard was “highly qualified,” with between 1,200 and 1,300 flight hours, and the student was working toward a commercial/instrument rating. He added that flying over water, particularly at night, carries additional risks: “you don’t have clear horizons, you get vertigo,” making spatial disorientation a possibility. But Carastro refrained from speculating on the cause until investigators completed their work. At present, the wreckage has not been recovered. The USCG, local agencies, and volunteer organizations continue search operations. Investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been initiated; authorities emphasize it is premature to draw conclusions about the cause of the crash.

Beijing, China: Air China and Rolls-Royce have completed their USD 315 million engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Beijing, marking a major expansion of Rolls-Royce’s service network in mainland China. The joint venture, Beijing Aero Engine Services Ltd (BAESL), will induct its first engine in December 2025, with full commercial operations scheduled for early 2026. The Beijing site will overhaul Trent 700, Trent XWB-84, and Trent 1000 engines, which power A330, A350 and Boeing 787 fleets operated by Chinese carriers. Rolls-Royce said BAESL is designed as a “digitally enabled, next-generation” shop with advanced tooling and automation. According to official Beijing investment authorities, the facility spans more than 80,000 sq. m and will employ up to 800 staff once fully ramped up. It is expected to reach an annual capacity of 250 engine shop visits by the mid-2030s. This is Rolls-Royce’s first MRO joint venture on mainland China and its fourth globally, complementing HAESL in Hong Kong, SAESL in Singapore, and N3 in Germany. For Air China, the project strengthens domestic overhaul capability for high-thrust wide-body engines, reducing dependency on overseas shops. Air China executives said the facility will support the “industrialisation and localisation” of China’s engine maintenance ecosystem. Rolls-Royce leaders noted that China’s expanding wide-body fleet with nearly 600 Trent engines in service requires long-term, locally available maintenance capacity. BAESL is situated in Shunyi District, inside the Beijing Capital International Airport Economic Zone. Infrastructure includes overhaul bays, advanced engine testing facilities, parts warehousing and digital monitoring centres. With the JV now structurally complete, Rolls-Royce and Air China will begin progressive operational readiness checks before the first Trent engine arrives later this year. The facility is expected to significantly cut turnaround times for Chinese operators and reinforce China’s position as a major MRO hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

New Delhi, India: Flight operations across several Indian carriers were disrupted on Tuesday after volcanic ash from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi eruption drifted toward major West Asia and India-bound air corridors. Airlines including Air India, Akasa Air and IndiGo cancelled or rerouted multiple flights as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an urgent advisory enforcing strict avoidance of ash-affected airspace. The DGCA directed airlines to steer clear of regions and flight levels identified as contaminated by volcanic ash. The regulator also instructed carriers to reassess flight plans, fuel requirements and alternates, and to file immediate reports of any suspected ash encounters. The advisory highlighted the risk to aircraft engines and airframes, and asked operators to conduct additional inspections for any aircraft that may have flown near the affected zones. Airports were simultaneously ordered to check runways, aprons and taxiways for possible ash contamination and initiate cleaning procedures if required. Air India cancelled 11 flights over the past 24 hours, stating that precautionary checks were needed on aircraft that might have traversed areas close to the ash plume. The airline said it was monitoring volcanic-ash advisories in coordination with international aviation agencies and had not observed any major operational impact beyond temporary cancellations. Akasa Air suspended several India–Gulf flights, including services to Jeddah, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi, citing the need to avoid ash-affected airspace over the Arabian Peninsula. The airline offered full refunds and complimentary rebooking for passengers scheduled to travel on 24 and 25 November. IndiGo reported multiple cancellations as well, noting that its operations team was adjusting routes in real time based on ash-movement maps issued by global meteorological centres. At least six flights including services from Mumbai and southern metros were grounded as a precaution. Volcanic ash can severely damage aircraft by melting inside engines, clogging ventilation systems and affecting sensors. Following ICAO protocols, Indian carriers have shifted flight paths and temporarily halted services operating along westbound routes that intersect the plume’s trajectory. Although the ash cloud was observed at high altitudes reducing the likelihood of direct impact on surface visibility, aviation authorities stressed that even small concentrations can be hazardous for high-altitude jet operations. Meteorological agencies indicated that the ash plume continued its eastward movement toward China after passing over northern India. Airlines said normal operations would resume once updated advisories confirm the clearing of affected corridors. Indian regulators and carriers remain on heightened watch, treating the event as a significant international air-safety incident requiring continuous monitoring.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia is preparing to launch three new airlines, a significant expansion of its aviation ecosystem as the kingdom accelerates its Vision 2030 strategy to boost tourism, improve connectivity and transform into a global aviation hub. Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority, confirmed the plan, saying the new carriers will complement the existing network led by Saudia, Riyadh Air, flynas and flyadeal. “A successful national airline builds a destination, Riyadh Air, Saudia and three more air carriers to be announced,” he said. The first of the three new carriers will be a low-cost airline based at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. The airline will be operated by a consortium comprising Air Arabia, Nesma Group, and KUN Holding, after the group won the government tender earlier this year. According to public disclosures, the new LCC plans to operate 45 aircraft by 2030, fly 24 domestic and 57 international routes, and handle around 10 million passengers annually. It is also expected to generate approximately 2,400 direct jobs once fully operational. These developments align with Saudi Arabia’s push to decentralize aviation capacity beyond Jeddah and Riyadh, strengthening the Eastern Province as a competitive hub for both domestic and regional travel. A second airline will be established in Medina, focused on serving the booming religious tourism sector. The carrier is expected to support Hajj and Umrah operations by providing direct international connectivity to the holy city, reducing pressure on Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport. Government officials indicated that tenders for the Medina-based airline are expected within months, signaling that planning is already in advanced stages. The third airline remains undisclosed, with no public confirmation on whether it will be a full-service, hybrid or low-cost carrier. Industry observers say the airline could target underserved regional markets or support long-haul connectivity as Saudi Arabia expands its inbound tourism targets. Saudi Arabia handled 128 million passengers in 2024, a double-digit increase that has reinforced the need for expanded airline capacity and airport infrastructure. The kingdom has committed $100 billion to overhaul and modernize its aviation sector, including airport development, new carriers, digital transformation and long-term fleet investments. Riyadh Air is scheduled to launch international operations in 2025, while Saudia Group is expanding through flyadeal’s recent order of 10 Airbus A330neo aircraft, signaling the nation’s broader shift toward becoming a top global aviation market. The launch of three new airlines represents one of the most aggressive aviation expansions currently underway globally, positioning Saudi Arabia to handle its revised tourism target of 150 million annual visitors by 2030.

Suva, Fiji: The Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) has ordered Sunflower Aviation to shut down its operations after the company’s maintenance certificate expired and was not renewed. The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation confirmed yesterday that Sunflower Aviation’s Aircraft Maintenance Organisation Certificate issued under Air Navigation Regulations Part 145C expired at midnight on November 22, 2025, and was not renewed following regulatory findings. According to the ministry, a comprehensive CAAF assessment identified “significant and recurring safety non-compliances,” prompting the regulator to withhold renewal. The ministry said safety remains the Government’s top priority and cannot be compromised under any circumstances. JAG chief executive and managing director Captain Tim Joyce has strongly disputed the Government’s position, labelling the public safety narrative “misleading” and rejecting the claim that Sunflower Aviation posed any risk. He insisted that the issue centred on a technical documentation matter rather than a safety breach, and warned that the decision would unnecessarily affect students, families, and staff. “We respectfully reject the claims and implications contained in the press release and assert that the public was misled about safety risks,” Captain Joyce said. He added that Sunflower Aviation had never operated an unsafe aircraft, nor had CAAF ever issued a finding that any aircraft maintained by the company was improperly released to service. CAAF stood by its determination, stating it acted independently under its legal mandate, and would consider any licence application only after all deficiencies were corrected, verified, and brought into full regulatory compliance. Captain Joyce, however, argued that CAAF’s decision was rooted in its interpretation of a paperwork technicality involving the release-to-service documents of a Cessna 172 used for private flight training at Nausori Airport. He said the aircraft had been cleared by a fully licensed CAAF-approved engineer and remained airworthy. “The minister’s statement omitted the actual grounds claimed by CAAF,” he said. “The decision was based solely on CAAF’s interpretation of a documentation technicality. The aircraft passed all required maintenance procedures and remains fully airworthy. Therefore, the issue is administrative, not a safety concern.” JAG further claimed that the abrupt non-renewal without a show-cause notice, corrective action pathway, or reasonable warning breached basic principles of natural justice, due process, legitimate expectation, and proportionality. The company also criticised the ministry’s public comments, saying they created an inaccurate impression of danger. “The Ministry’s press release wrongly equated a technical dispute with public hazard. No unsafe aircraft were ever operated by Sunflower Aviation, and no finding of that nature exists. The public deserves truthful, evidence-based communication, not vague insinuations of risk,” the group said.

Hyderabad, India: A Gulf Air flight operating from Bahrain to Hyderabad was diverted to Mumbai early Sunday after airport authorities in Hyderabad received an email claiming a bomb had been placed on the aircraft. The threat was later confirmed to be a hoax after detailed security checks. Flight GF 274, carrying 154 passengers, departed Bahrain at 22:20 hrs on Saturday and was scheduled to arrive at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at 04:55 a.m. On Sunday. At around 3 a.m., an email warning of an explosive device onboard was sent to the Hyderabad airport’s customer support address, prompting authorities to initiate emergency protocols. Following standard procedure, the aircraft was instructed to divert to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, where it landed safely. Security teams conducted multiple layers of inspection and found no suspicious objects. After receiving clearance from security agencies, the flight departed Mumbai and landed in Hyderabad at 11:31 a.m. Gulf Air stated that the diversion was carried out “in accordance with safety and security requirements” and confirmed that all passengers were safe. Hyderabad Airport officials filed a complaint with local police, who have registered a case and begun tracing the origin of the threat email. Authorities noted that the message appeared similar to earlier hoax threats received in recent weeks. The incident follows a series of false alarms involving flights bound for Hyderabad. Earlier this month, an IndiGo flight from Jeddah to Hyderabad was diverted to Mumbai after an email referencing a past airport blast claimed a bomb was onboard. That threat also proved to be false, but it prompted full emergency procedures and inspections. The repeated hoax threats have triggered heightened alert levels at Hyderabad Airport and renewed discussions within India’s aviation sector regarding cyber-threat response, email-verification systems, and rapid-response coordination for inbound international flights.

Santa Cruz, United States: Joby Aviation has filed a lawsuit against rival Archer Aviation, alleging that the company gained an unfair competitive advantage by using confidential business information taken by a former Joby executive. The complaint, lodged in Santa Cruz County Superior Court, claims the misconduct allowed Archer to pursue a more lucrative arrangement with one of Joby’s key real-estate partners. According to the filing, Joby accuses former employee George Kivork, its ex-head of U.S. state and local policy, of downloading and transferring internal documents days before resigning in July and joining Archer. Joby Aviation says the files included details on partnership agreements, regulatory strategies, vertiport infrastructure plans, and operational data related to its electric aircraft. A forensic review cited in the lawsuit found that Kivork allegedly emailed dozens of files to his personal account and altered permissions on hundreds more, enabling him to retain access after his departure. Joby Aviation argues that Archer later approached a strategic real-estate developer with insight drawn from the leaked information, attempting to outbid Joby’s existing agreement. The company is seeking unspecified monetary damages and an injunction to stop Archer Aviation from using any of the disputed materials. Archer Aviation has rejected the accusations. In a statement, Eric Lentell, Archer’s Chief Legal and Strategy Officer, said the lawsuit “is entirely without merit” and lacks identification of any specific trade secrets. He added that the company has no agreement with the developer referenced in Joby’s complaint and criticised the lawsuit as an attempt to disrupt competitive dynamics in the emerging electric air-taxi sector. The dispute comes as both firms accelerate toward FAA certification and negotiate infrastructure and development partnerships essential for future eVTOL services. Archer previously faced a similar trade-secrets battle with Wisk Aero, which was settled in 2023, but maintains that its compliance systems prevent misuse of any proprietary information from former employees’ previous employers. The court has scheduled the first hearing for March 20, 2026, with the case expected to progress through motions and discovery well into next year.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
