Indian conglomerate Adani Defence & Aerospace and Brazil’s Embraer S.A. signed a landmark MoU to collaborate on establishing a regional transport aircraft ecosystem in India. The agreement focuses on jointly developing an aircraft assembly capability and related aerospace supply chain and services. Under the framework: A regional aircraft final assembly line is to be set up in India. Cooperation will extend to aftermarket support, pilot training and progressively increasing local content in production. Financial terms, production timelines, specific aircraft models or the location of the facility have not been disclosed in the initial MoU. At the show, Flamingo Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. signed an agreement with United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) of Russia for the delivery of six Ilyushin IL‑114‑300 regional turboprop aircraft. The deal targets India’s domestic regional connectivity market and represents a step towards operationalising heavier regional aircraft within the UDAN framework. The aircraft, seating approximately 68 passengers, are slated for delivery beginning in 2028. The pact includes collaboration on certification, entry‑into‑service preparations and training. Vadim Badekha, CEO, UAC, said India is central to the company’s civil aviation ambitions. “We consider that the Indian market has great potential for us. The aim is to support localisation of cabin interiors for FLY91’s ATR 72‑600 fleet. The agreement covers design, prototyping and certification work, aligning with the government’s Make in India initiative. The Government of Odisha signed two separate MoUs at Wings India 2026 to bolster aviation infrastructure and technological capabilities in the state. Flying Training Organisation (FTO): An MoU with Alchemist Aviation will enable the establishment of an FTO at Dandbose Airport in Mayurbhanj district, with a planned annual capacity to train approximately 50 commercial pilots. UAV Training and Testing Centre: Another agreement with BonV Aero will lead to Odisha’s first UAV (drone) training and testing facility at Rangeilunda Airstrip in Ganjam district, expected to train more than 100 UAV pilots annually. In addition to aircraft acquisitions, the airline signed a multi-year deal with Boeing Global Services for a Component Services Program. Kaohsiung, Taiwan: Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX449, bound for Hong Kong from Kaohsiung International Airport in Taiwan, was forced to return to its departure airport on Sunday morning after an engine system alert indicated a possible technical issue, airline and aviation sources confirmed. The Airbus A321neo, scheduled to depart at 7:45 am local time with about 200 passengers on board, took off as planned but turned back shortly after take-off when cockpit instruments showed an abnormal reading related to one of the engines. The aircraft landed safely back in Kaohsiung at around 8:26 am to 8:49 am under standard safety procedures, according to reports. Preliminary inspections by technical teams at Kaohsiung indicated that a lubricant (engine oil) leak in one engine likely caused the pressure anomaly and triggered the warning that prompted the turn-back. Maintenance crews estimated around two hours would be needed to clear any spilled oil and carry out targeted system checks before deciding on the aircraft’s next steps. Cathay Pacific described the incident only as a “technical issue” in its official comment, without confirming specific engine fault details in its public statement, while emphasising that safety considerations guided the decision to return. Taiwanese media reports also referenced the engine oil leak as the apparent cause. All passengers disembarked normally after the aircraft returned to Kaohsiung. Chiang Mai, Thailand: Two Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) pilots were killed Thursday morning when their light attack and reconnaissance aircraft crashed during a training mission in Chiang Mai province, military officials confirmed. The aircraft, a Beechcraft AT-6TH Wolverine, went down at approximately 10:20 a.m. local time in a remote training area of Chom Thong district, about 60 kilometres southwest of Chiang Mai International Airport, according to RTAF spokesperson Air Marshal Chakkrit Thammavichai. The plane was on a combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) training flight when it crashed into a forested hillside near Ban Huai Fang village, officials said. Rescue teams were alerted at 10:48 a.m. and reached the site, which was reported to be largely inaccessible by road, requiring responders to hike through rugged terrain. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the aircraft engulfed in flames with debris scattered over a roughly 20-metre radius, and a crater reportedly formed at the impact point. The bodies of both pilots remained inside the wreckage when rescuers reached the scene. Authorities have cordoned off the crash site while investigators work to determine the underlying cause of the accident. There have been no reported civilian casualties or damage to nearby property. The RTAF has identified the two pilots as Squadron Leader Samatcha Khunmas, an instructor pilot, and Flight Officer Korawit Jenkit. Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards.
