Video footage that surfaced online showed a passenger boarding staircase belonging to IndiGo moving uncontrollably across the apron before striking a parked Air India aircraft. The footage quickly circulated on social media and raised questions regarding the securing of movable airport equipment during adverse weather conditions. While it is confirmed that three aircraft were damaged, authorities have not disclosed the registrations of the aircraft or specified which sections of each aircraft were struck. As of June 8, neither Air India nor airport authorities have publicly identified whether the damage occurred to the fuselage, wings, tail, nose section, engines or other structures. Technical inspections are underway to determine the full extent of the damage. The sudden storm brought strong winds and heavy rain to the airport area, creating hazardous ramp conditions within a short period. Following the incident, the damaged aircraft were removed from operational service and subjected to engineering inspections. A probe has been initiated to establish the sequence of events, assess weather-related factors and review ground handling procedures for securing equipment during sudden adverse weather.

La Romana, Dominican Republic: Two crew members were killed after a private jet crashed while attempting an emergency landing at La Romana International Airport in the Dominican Republic on June 7, authorities confirmed. According to the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), the aircraft involved was a U.S.-registered Gulfstream G200 executive jet operating a flight from La Romana to Austin, Texas. The aircraft was carrying only the pilot and co-pilot, with no passengers onboard. Preliminary information indicates the flight experienced a technical problem shortly after departure and requested to return to La Romana International Airport. Reports from local authorities suggest the crew declared an emergency while the aircraft was approximately 16 nautical miles southwest of the airport before turning back toward the airfield. Video footage circulating on social media shows the jet touching down during the emergency landing attempt before skidding along the runway. The aircraft then appeared to bounce and veer out of control before erupting into a large fireball. The impact and subsequent fire destroyed much of the aircraft. Both crew members sustained fatal injuries. Authorities have not yet publicly released their identities. Emergency response teams, including airport firefighters and rescue personnel, were dispatched immediately to the scene. Airport operations were temporarily suspended while emergency crews worked at the crash site and investigators began documenting evidence. Initial statements from officials indicate the aircraft encountered a malfunction before the attempted landing. Puerto Rico Department of Public Safety Secretary Arturo Garffer told local media that the aircraft had experienced problems during the landing phase, though he stressed that information remains preliminary pending a full investigation. The aircraft reportedly came down within the airport perimeter after losing stability during the emergency landing sequence. Images and video from the scene showed extensive fire damage and wreckage scattered near the runway area. The Gulfstream G200 is a twin-engine business jet capable of carrying between eight and 18 occupants depending on cabin configuration. The Dominican Civil Aviation Board and IDAC have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft's maintenance history, technical condition, flight data, communications with air traffic control, and the circumstances surrounding the reported malfunction. Private Jet Crash During Emergency Landing Attempt Kills Pilot And Co-Pilot Onboard

Bhiwani, India: India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released its final investigation report into the accident involving Tecnam P2006T aircraft VT-VDB operated by FSTC Flying School at Bhiwani Airfield, Haryana, on May 12, 2022, concluding that fuel vapor lock in the left engine, combined with crew handling deficiencies and limited experience on type, led to the crash during a training flight. The twin-engine Tecnam P2006T was conducting a routine training sortie at Chaudhary Bansi Lal Airport, Bhiwani, with a flight instructor and a student pilot on board. The exercise involved six circuit-and-landing maneuvers and was the second training sortie of the day. According to the investigation, the aircraft completed its first circuit and performed a normal touch-and-go landing on Runway 30. Shortly after becoming airborne again, the crew experienced rough running and a loss of power in the left engine. The instructor took control and initiated asymmetric-flight procedures to maintain directional control. While the aircraft was still climbing at approximately 100 feet above ground level, the crew reported roughness and a reduction in power from the right engine as well. As the aircraft’s airspeed decayed, it was unable to sustain the climb. The crew elected to conduct a forced landing within the airfield boundary. The aircraft touched down heavily, sustaining substantial damage before coming to rest near the perimeter wall. Both occupants evacuated safely. No fatalities, serious injuries, fire, or damage to third parties were reported. The accident aircraft was a 2019-built Tecnam P2006T, serial number 269, powered by two Rotax 912 S3 engines. Records examined by investigators showed the aircraft held valid airworthiness documentation and had been maintained in accordance with DGCA-approved maintenance programs. The 34-year-old flight instructor held a valid Commercial Pilot Licence and had accumulated approximately 1,589 flight hours. However, he had only around 28 hours of experience on the Tecnam P2006T type. The 20-year-old student pilot had logged approximately 182 flight hours, most of them on Cessna 172 aircraft. Prior to the accident, he had accumulated only about 1 hour and 15 minutes on the Tecnam P2006T. Investigators found both crew members were properly licensed, medically fit, adequately rested, and had not consumed alcohol. A central focus of the investigation was determining whether an engine malfunction had caused the accident. AAIB investigators conducted extensive examinations and operational testing of both Rotax engines and associated fuel, ignition, and electrical systems. The report concluded that neither engine suffered a technical malfunction and both were capable of producing power. Investigators also noted that the aircraft’s Garmin avionics system had the capability to record engine and flight parameters. However, no SD card had been installed in the data-logging slot, meaning no flight data was recorded. Subsequent attempts by the U.S. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to recover information from the units' internal memory was unsuccessful. Weather conditions at Bhiwani played a significant role in the occurrence. Meteorological data recorded temperatures of approximately 44°C at the time of the flight, while a weather station measured 46°C immediately after the accident. The aircraft type is approved for operations up to 50°C. Investigators determined that the combination of extreme ambient temperatures, elevated runway surface temperatures, and the use of automotive gasoline (MOGAS) created conditions favorable for vapor lock formation. Vapor lock occurs when fuel vaporizes within fuel lines, disrupting the continuous supply of liquid fuel to the engine. The report noted that FSTC operated its Tecnam fleet on MOGAS containing 10% ethanol. Although the fuel met all approved specifications and manufacturer requirements, investigators found that its volatility increased the likelihood of vapor formation under very hot operating conditions. According to the report, the student pilot switched off the aircraft’s electric fuel pumps after leveling at circuit altitude, following normal procedures. As the aircraft entered the circuit pattern and later prepared for the touch-and-go maneuver, engine power settings were reduced, resulting in lower fuel flow and reduced cooling airflow through the engine compartments. Following touchdown and the subsequent takeoff, investigators believe heat accumulated within the engine cowling area, allowing fuel vapor to form in the fuel lines supplying the left engine. The resulting vapor lock interrupted fuel flow, causing rough running and loss of power in the left engine. The right engine later experienced a reduction in performance under similar environmental conditions, though investigators found evidence indicating it continued producing power throughout the forced landing sequence. While acknowledging the instructor initially applied correct asymmetric-flight techniques after the left-engine power loss, the report found several critical procedures outlined in the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) were not followed. Investigators determined that the failed left-engine propeller was not feathered, creating additional aerodynamic drag. The landing gear also remained extended, further degrading aircraft performance. The report additionally concluded that the instructor did not lower the aircraft’s pitch attitude sufficiently to preserve airspeed after the initial engine failure. As a result, airspeed decayed below the aircraft’s minimum control speed (VMCA), reducing controllability and climb capability. AAIB stated that the crew likely interpreted the right engine’s reduced performance as a complete engine failure, although evidence suggested the engine was still producing power. The investigation further noted that neither a left-engine failure call nor a Mayday transmission was made to air traffic personnel. AAIB also identified several organizational shortcomings at the flying school. Investigators found that FSTC had reduced local circuit altitude from the DGCA-approved 1,500 feet to 700 feet without formally amending its Training and Procedures Manual or obtaining regulatory approval. The investigation additionally criticized the emergency checklist carried onboard, describing it as a small single-page document that did not clearly describe actions required during various emergency situations. Another finding noted that the school did not utilize the aircraft’s built-in Garmin data-recording capability, despite the system being available. The report concluded that the aircraft was airworthy, properly maintained, loaded within limits, and carrying sufficient fuel. AAIB determined that the ambient temperature was close to the aircraft’s operational limit and conducive to vapor lock formation. Investigators also found that both crew members had comparatively limited experience on the Tecnam P2006T and that emergency procedures were not followed precisely after the initial engine power loss. The final probable cause stated that the accident occurred when the left engine encountered vapor lock and the right engine suffered a slight loss of power while operating in temperatures near the aircraft’s operational limit. The aircraft subsequently impacted the ground during a forced landing. Contributing factors identified by AAIB included non-adherence to Aircraft Flight Manual procedures and the pairing of two crew members with limited experience handling emergency situations on the aircraft type.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards.
