The report examines the mounting challenges affecting the maintenance ecosystem for the latest-generation single-aisle aircraft engines, particularly CFM International's LEAP engine family and Pratt & Whitney's Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines. According to the study, a combination of engine durability concerns, shortages of spare parts, limited availability of spare engines and restricted access to the aftermarket repair sector has significantly disrupted airline operations. The resulting pressures have reduced engine time on wing, increased demand for engine shop visits and complicated maintenance planning for carriers across the globe. The report highlights the scale of the challenge by pointing to the Pratt & Whitney GTF fleet, where the number of grounded aircraft reached a peak in March 2025. At that time, 648 GTF-powered aircraft equivalent to approximately 28% of the global GTF fleet were out of service while awaiting maintenance slots, replacement engines or critical spare parts. Airlines affected by the disruptions were forced to modify fleet strategies by retaining older aircraft longer than planned, extending existing lease agreements, securing additional leased aircraft and adjusting operational capacity. IATA cautioned that the problem is likely to intensify over the coming decade as airlines continue to take delivery of large numbers of fuel-efficient narrowbody aircraft. In 2024 alone, manufacturers delivered approximately 2,000 single-aisle engines, including around 800 GTF engines and 1,200 LEAP engines. Between 2030 and 2040, annual deliveries are expected to remain at roughly 3,700 engines per year, consisting of approximately 1,200 GTF engines and 2,500 LEAP engines annually. As these fleets grow, engine maintenance requirements are expected to increase dramatically. The study forecasts annual LEAP engine shop visits will rise from roughly 600–800 visits in 2025 to more than 5,000 by 2040. For Pratt & Whitney's GTF engines, annual shop visits are projected to increase from approximately 1,000 in 2025 to over 2,000 by 2040. Commenting on the findings, Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General, said current MRO constraints are already affecting airline operations and warned that the situation will worsen without significant structural changes. While engine manufacturers are investing in additional maintenance capacity, Walsh stressed that capacity expansion alone will not solve the problem. Instead, airlines require improved access to spare parts, a wider range of approved repair solutions, fair access to maintenance capacity and greater competition within the aftermarket sector. To address the crisis, the study identifies several strategic actions that stakeholders across the aviation value chain can implement. One recommendation focuses on increasing the availability of engine components. The report calls for accelerated development and regulatory approval of repair solutions that can reduce component scrappage rates. It also advocates expanding licensed production of critical parts and increasing access to used serviceable material recovered from engine teardowns. Another priority is improving access to the MRO market by removing barriers that limit participation by independent maintenance providers. IATA argues that third-party MRO companies should have fair access to parts, repair information and specialized tooling needed to expand maintenance capacity. The association pointed to its agreement with CFM International, originally signed in 2018 and renewed in January 2026, as an example of a framework that supports customer choice, regulator-approved non-OEM parts and repairs, and equitable access for independent MRO providers. The report also urges airlines and lessors to incorporate long-term spare parts access provisions into future aircraft and engine acquisition agreements. Such arrangements would help provide predictable pricing and ensure that operators can transfer access rights to their preferred maintenance providers, including independent MRO organizations. In addition, IATA is calling on original equipment manufacturers across the engine, airframe and component sectors to adopt transparent and competitive aftermarket practices. These measures would support customer choice and facilitate the use of regulator-approved alternative parts and repair solutions. The association emphasized that solving the problem will require coordinated action from airlines, aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers, lessors and maintenance providers. According to IATA, improving parts availability, expanding repair options and aligning maintenance capacity more closely with airline operational requirements are essential to strengthening supply chain resilience. Walsh noted that addressing today's disruptions remains the industry's immediate priority but argued that long-term resilience will depend on creating a more transparent, competitive and collaborative aftermarket environment. He said the relationship between aircraft manufacturers and engine manufacturers must evolve to better support operational resilience throughout an aircraft's lifecycle, ultimately helping airlines return engines to service more quickly and reducing avoidable operational disruptions. Upon arrival, he picked up the 12-year-old girl, drove her to an isolated location, and assaulted her three times inside the vehicle. Statements provided to Merseyside Police indicated that the child struggled to process the severity of the incident at the time, reporting feelings of extreme nervousness and confusion. The abuse came to light days later when the victim confided in a friend, who subsequently informed her mother. Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards.
