41% Of India's Newly Licensed Commercial Pilots Trained At Foreign Flight Schools SEO DES: India issued 1,331 Commercial Pilot Licences in the first half of 2026; The country currently has 41 DGCA-approved FTOs across 63 flying bases SOCIAL: India issued 1,331 Commercial Pilot Licences in the first half of 2026, with 540 pilots, or around 41%, having completed their training at foreign flying training organisations. The country currently has 41 DGCA-approved FTOs across 63 flying bases, supported by more than 400 training aircraft and a capacity to train around 3,500 students at a time. The figures come as India's aviation sector expands, highlighting the need to strengthen domestic pilot-training capacity and maintain a steady pipeline of qualified flight crew to meet future demand. New Delhi, India: India issued 1,331 Commercial Pilot Licences (CPLs) in the first six months of 2026, with around 41% of the newly licensed pilots having completed their training at foreign flying training organisations (FTOs), according to data presented by the government in Parliament. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had issued CPLs to 791 cadets trained at Indian FTOs and 540 cadets trained at foreign FTOs as of June 30, 2026. The figures mean that more than four in every 10 pilots receiving their commercial licences during the period had undergone training overseas. The latest figures come as India's aviation sector continues to expand, with airlines growing their fleets and networks and demand for qualified flight crew expected to rise alongside the industry's growth. The number of CPLs issued in India has remained relatively strong in recent years. The DGCA issued 1,652 CPLs in 2025, compared with 1,347 in 2024, 1,622 in 2023 and 1,165 in 2022. The figures point to sustained growth in the number of pilots obtaining commercial licences, although a significant share of newly licensed pilots continues to complete their initial training outside India. According to the government, India currently has 41 DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisations operating across 63 flying bases, with a fleet of more than 400 training aircraft. Under DGCA requirements, FTOs are required to maintain an aircraft-to-instructor-to-student ratio of 1:1:10. Based on the existing infrastructure, the country's approved FTO network has the capacity to train approximately 3,500 students at any given time. Government data presented separately in Parliament also shows that the Indian pilot-training ecosystem has been expanding. A 2026 parliamentary response stated that 41 FTOs had been approved by the DGCA across 63 flying bases, although three were non-operational at the time, leaving 38 operational FTOs. The same response said the DGCA had approved three new FTOs during the financial year 2025-26 and that FTOs inducted 61 training aircraft in 2025 to expand pilot-training capacity. The government has also taken steps to strengthen the pilot-training ecosystem by simplifying the approval and oversight process for FTOs and revising training regulations with the aim of improving capacity and operational efficiency. These measures are intended to support the expansion of domestic pilot training as India's commercial aviation market continues to grow. The issue of pilot availability has gained greater attention as Indian airlines continue to add aircraft and expand operations. While the government has previously stated that there is no overall shortage of pilots or crew in the Indian aviation sector, it has acknowledged a shortage of experienced commanders for certain aircraft types, with foreign pilots being employed under the Foreign Aircrew Temporary Authorization (FATA) framework to address those requirements. The latest licensing data therefore highlights both the growing output of India's pilot-training system and the continued reliance on overseas training. With airlines expected to expand their fleets further, increasing domestic training capacity and ensuring a steady pipeline of qualified pilots will remain important to supporting the country's long-term aviation growth.

Three British Airways Pilots Fall Sick Mid-Flight Following Hyderabad Stopover SEO DES: One first officer reportedly became incapacitated at 30,000 ft & needed oxygen, while the other two pilots also developed symptoms but remained able to fly SOCIAL: British Airways has launched an investigation after all three pilots on Flight BA276 from Hyderabad to London Heathrow reportedly fell ill during the flight, raising concerns over possible food poisoning. One first officer became incapacitated while the Boeing 777-200ER was cruising at around 30,000 feet and reportedly required oxygen, while the other two pilots also experienced symptoms. The crew had stayed overnight in Hyderabad, where they reportedly ate breakfast together at their hotel and consumed bottled water before operating the long-haul service. After landing in London, the pilots filed mandatory Air Safety Reports and provided medical samples to help determine the cause. British Airways is also reviewing its Hyderabad crew accommodation following reports of previous hygiene concerns, while investigating whether contaminated food, water or another source was responsible. Image: MArk Harkin (Flickr) Video: British Airways London, United Kingdom: British Airways has launched an investigation after all three pilots operating Flight BA276 from Hyderabad to London Heathrow on July 20, 2026 reportedly fell ill with suspected food poisoning during the flight, with one first officer becoming incapacitated at around 30,000 feet and requiring oxygen. The incident occurred after the flight crew had spent an overnight layover in Hyderabad. According to reports, the three pilots had breakfast together in the club lounge of the hotel where they were staying before operating the long-haul service to London. They also reportedly drank bottled water supplied by an external company. The hotel itself has not been publicly identified by British Airways. BA276, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER, was scheduled to fly from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad to London Heathrow. The flight takes roughly 10 1⁄2 to 11 hours, and the aircraft was operating with three pilots to allow the crew to take rest periods during the long-haul journey. At some point during the flight, one of the first officers reportedly became seriously unwell and was rendered incapacitated while the aircraft was cruising at approximately 30,000 feet. He reportedly required oxygen and was in need of significant medical attention after the aircraft reached Heathrow. The other two pilots also reportedly developed symptoms but remained able to operate the aircraft. Their conditions reportedly worsened after the aircraft landed in the UK. Despite the health emergency affecting the entire flight-deck crew, British Airways said passenger safety was not compromised and that the flight was operated safely. All three pilots subsequently filed mandatory Air Safety Reports and were asked to provide medical samples so that doctors could investigate the possible source of the illness. The investigation is examining whether the pilots' shared breakfast or the bottled water consumed during their Hyderabad stopover could have been responsible. However, no definitive cause of the illness has been established. The incident has also raised questions about the Hyderabad accommodation used by British Airways crews. Reports citing pilot representatives and union sources said there had been previous complaints about hygiene at the hotel, with claims of numerous or "dozens" of concerns. These allegations have not been independently confirmed by British Airways. The airline said it was reviewing its crew accommodation arrangements in Hyderabad following reports of sickness. In a statement quoted by Gulf News, British Airways said: "The welfare of our colleagues is a top priority, and we are reviewing crew accommodation in this location following some isolated reports of sickness." The incident has prompted renewed attention to food-safety precautions for flight crews, particularly on long-haul operations. Airlines commonly take measures to reduce the risk of pilots being incapacitated by foodborne illness, including avoiding identical meals for operating pilots. In this case, however, all three pilots reportedly became unwell after eating together during their hotel stopover. The precise cause of the pilots' illness remains under investigation, and British Airways has not publicly confirmed that food poisoning was definitively responsible. The airline's review of the Hyderabad accommodation arrangements, together with the medical samples provided by the pilots, is expected to help establish whether the illness was linked to food, water or another source.

London, United Kingdom: A British Airways Airbus A320neo operating flight BA547 from Rome Fiumicino Airport to London Heathrow was forced to go around during its approach on July 22 after a hydraulic failure affected the aircraft's landing gear. Flight BA547, operated by an Airbus A320-251N registered G-TTNR, departed Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) for London Heathrow (LHR) on Wednesday, July 22. The flight was scheduled to arrive at Heathrow Terminal 5, with the aircraft ultimately landing safely at the airport after the crew dealt with the technical issue. Flight-tracking data confirms G-TTNR was the aircraft assigned to BA547 that day. The aircraft was on final approach to Heathrow's Runway 09L when the crew initiated a go-around after experiencing a hydraulic failure affecting the landing gear. The aircraft climbed to around 4,000 feet and entered a holding pattern before making another approach. The aircraft landed safely on Runway 09L approximately 35 minutes after the go-around. Airport emergency and fire services were positioned to assist the aircraft following the landing as a precaution because of the reported landing-gear issue. The incident also had a temporary operational impact at Heathrow. The airport briefly moved to single-runway operations while the aircraft was being dealt with on the runway. Arrivals were temporarily handled on the other runway before normal two-runway operations resumed after the aircraft was inspected and cleared. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. Flight-tracking records show that BA547 departed Rome later than its scheduled 11:15 CEST departure time and arrived at Heathrow at about 13:45 BST, around 40 minutes behind its scheduled arrival time of 13:05 BST. The flight normally operates between Rome Fiumicino and London Heathrow, a route of roughly 1,445 kilometres. The available reports identify the problem as a hydraulic failure involving the landing gear. However, no official detailed technical explanation from British Airways, the UK Civil Aviation Authority or the UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been publicly identified at the time of writing. The precise cause of the hydraulic failure therefore remains unclear. The aircraft was able to complete its second approach and land safely at Heathrow, with no reported injuries. The temporary runway restrictions were subsequently lifted and airport operations returned to normal.

New Delhi, India: India is considering a policy change that could allow airport operators to own and operate airlines, potentially opening the door for major airport companies such as Adani Group and GMR Airports Ltd. to establish their own carriers. The proposal is being discussed within the Ministry of Civil Aviation and could mark a significant shift in India's aviation policy. Under the existing rules, operators of airports in Delhi and Mumbai are barred from holding more than a 10% stake in any airline. Any relaxation or waiver of the ownership restrictions would require legal clearance from the Law Ministry and approval from the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi The potential policy change comes as India's domestic aviation market has become increasingly concentrated around IndiGo and Air India, which together control nearly 90% of domestic capacity. The government is reportedly examining whether allowing airport operators to enter the airline business could bring additional competition and reduce the dominance of the two leading carriers. If the restrictions are eased, the Adani Group, whose airport arm operates Mumbai airport and seven other airports, and GMR Airports, which manages New Delhi airport and four additional airports in India, could potentially establish or acquire airlines. However, the proposal also raises concerns about possible conflicts of interest. Airport operators that also own airlines could potentially give their own carriers preferential access to prime airport slots, creating a new imbalance in the market. The issue of fair and non-discriminatory access to airport infrastructure could therefore become an important consideration if the government proceeds with the policy change. The Ministry of Civil Aviation had not immediately responded to an emailed request for comment at the time of reporting. The discussions come against the backdrop of a major consolidation in India's airline industry over the past decade. The collapse of Jet Airways India Ltd. and Go Airlines India Ltd., along with the merger of Vistara and AirAsia India under the Tata Group, has reduced the number of significant competitors in the market. While Akasa Air, SpiceJet Ltd. and smaller regional airlines continue to operate, IndiGo and Air India have emerged as the dominant players. Concerns about market concentration were further highlighted during IndiGo's operational crisis in December, when the airline, which carries more than 60% of India's domestic passenger traffic, cancelled thousands of flights, mainly because of pilot shortages. The disruption affected air travel across the country and prompted Indian Railways to operate special trains for stranded passengers. Even if airport operators are permitted to launch airlines, aircraft availability could remain a major obstacle for new entrants. A global shortage of commercial aircraft, combined with delivery delays at Airbus SE and Boeing Co., continues to constrain airline expansion plans. Pandemic-era supply-chain disruptions have also contributed to the limited availability of new aircraft. International experience with airport-airline joint ownership offers a mixed picture. In the United States, strict public-ownership rules governing major airports and Federal Aviation Administration revenue-diversion laws effectively prevent local governments from directing airport revenues into airline ventures. In the European Union, joint airport and airline ownership is technically permitted, but strict antitrust enforcement makes such arrangements difficult to operate in practice. The potential policy change comes as India prepares for a major expansion of its aviation infrastructure. The country plans to double its number of airports to 350 by 2047, while the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts an additional 425 million passengers by 2044, which would bring passenger numbers to nearly three times their 2024 levels. The proposal could therefore reshape the competitive landscape of India's aviation sector, but it remains at the discussion stage. Any move to allow airport operators to own airlines would need to address concerns around competition, airport slot allocation and regulatory safeguards before becoming government policy.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain: An easyJet flight from Tenerife to Liverpool was forced to turn back to Tenerife South Airport after a brawl involving around 10 passengers broke out onboard shortly after departure on Tuesday evening, July 21, 2026. The incident occurred on easyJet flight EZY3352, which was operating from Tenerife South Airport in the Canary Islands to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the UK. The aircraft departed Tenerife shortly before 8 p.m. local time, but about 30 minutes into the flight, the crew contacted Spanish air traffic authorities to report the disturbance and request a return to the airport. According to Spanish air traffic authorities, around 10 passengers had become involved in a fight onboard. The captain subsequently decided to turn the aircraft back to Tenerife because of the danger the confrontation posed to the safety of the flight. The crew also requested that police be present when the aircraft arrived. Spanish air traffic authorities said they expedited the aircraft's return as much as possible while coordinating with the airport to ensure a police presence on the ground. Flight-tracking information cited in the report showed that the aircraft returned to Tenerife South Airport at around 9:05 p.m. local time. The flight landed safely and vacated Runway 07 without incident. The authorities did not disclose the identities or nationalities of the passengers involved, and it remains unclear whether any of those involved were British or whether anyone was arrested following the incident. No injuries have been reported in the available coverage. The total number of passengers and crew onboard has also not been disclosed. The available reports only confirm that around 10 passengers were involved in the altercation. The precise cause of the fight has not been established, and there is no confirmed information indicating that alcohol triggered the confrontation. The aircraft type and registration used specifically for the July 21 flight have not been independently confirmed. However, flight-tracking records for easyJet's EZY3352 service show the route as Tenerife South to Liverpool and indicate that the route is regularly operated by Airbus A320-family aircraft. This should not be taken as confirmation of the exact aircraft involved in the incident. The incident was reported by Spanish air traffic authorities, who provided details of the disturbance, the crew's decision to return and the request for police assistance. The authorities also voiced support for flight crews and passengers who increasingly have to deal with disruptive behaviour onboard aircraft.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
