Uttarakhand, India: A Bell 407 helicopter operated by Aryan Aviation crashed in a remote forested area near Garudchatti shortly after departing from Kedarnath, killing all seven people on board. The helicopter, which took off at around 5:30 a.m., was en route to Guptkashi when it reportedly encountered dense fog and poor visibility, leading to loss of control and a fatal impact into a hillside near Trijuginarayan. The victims included five pilgrims: Captain Rajveer Singh Chauhan - Pilot Rajkumar Jaiswal, Shraddha Jaiswal and their two-year-old daughter Kashi - Uttar Pradesh Tushti Singh - Uttar Pradesh Vikram Singh Rawat - Uttarakhand Vinod Neg - Temple Committee Staff member A retired Indian Army officer, Captain Chauhan had over 2,000 hours of flying experience. The impact caused the helicopter to catch fire, leaving all seven occupants charred beyond recognition. Their remains were taken to Rudraprayag District Hospital for identification and medical procedures. Eyewitnesses in nearby villages reported hearing a loud explosion minutes after the helicopter disappeared from sight. Local police and emergency responders reached the crash site swiftly, though the difficult terrain hampered access. Authorities have launched a multi-agency investigation into the crash. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) are leading the inquiry. Sonprayag Police have filed a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and under Section 10 of the Aircraft Act, holding Aryan Aviation and its executives accountable for operating flights despite reported poor weather conditions in the area. In immediate response, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered the suspension of all helicopter operations in the Char Dham circuit until further notice. The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) has also been directed to audit all existing helicopter operators and enforce stricter compliance with aviation safety standards. This is not the first fatal crash in the region. The Kedarnath route has seen several aviation accidents in the past decade: On May 8, 2025, another Bell helicopter (VT-OXF) crashed into a deep gorge near Gangnani, Uttarkashi, during a Yamunotri pilgrimage flight. Six people died, and one passenger survived with critical injuries. On October 18, 2022, a Kestrel Aviation Bell 407 helicopter crashed shortly after takeoff from Kedarnath, killing all seven occupants. The deadliest incident occurred on June 25, 2013, during the Uttarakhand floods, when an Indian Air Force Mi-17 V5 helicopter carrying rescue personnel crashed north of Gaurikund, killing 20 onboard, including IAF crew and NDRF members. These incidents, along with non-fatal emergency landings in recent months, have raised concerns over helicopter operations in high-altitude pilgrimage zones. Factors like sudden weather changes, difficult topography, and pressure to maintain tight flight schedules have been repeatedly cited in previous DGCA reports. According to official records and media reports, at least 40 people have died in helicopter accidents linked to Uttarakhand’s Char Dham region since 2013, making it one of the most hazardous civilian helicopter corridors in the country. Safety recommendations such as mandating twin-engine helicopters, advanced weather monitoring systems, and restricting operations to highly experienced pilots have been discussed but not uniformly implemented. Aviation regulators are now expected to fast-track new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) specific to pilgrimage routes. These may include real-time weather surveillance at helipads, coordination with local authorities before takeoff, and stricter penalties for violating operational norms during marginal conditions. Families of the deceased are expected to receive compensation from both the operator and the state government, pending the outcome of the inquiry. Further announcements are likely following the submission of the preliminary AAIB report.

Toulouse, France: Airbus has significantly revised its long-term aircraft demand outlook projecting a global need for 43,420 new aircraft, both passenger and cargo between 2025 and 2044. This fresh forecast, released just ahead of the 2025 Paris Air Show signals strong confidence in the aviation industry's resilience and the growing global demand for air travel, even amid lingering supply chain challenges and geopolitical uncertainties. Of the total projected deliveries, approximately 39,500 will be passenger aircraft, and 3,920 will be freighters, with 920 of those being newly built cargo aircraft. The rest will come from conversions of existing passenger jets into freighters, a trend driven by the ongoing surge in e-commerce and express delivery demand worldwide. According to Airbus, 80% of all new aircraft will be single-aisle jets such as the A320 family. These aircraft are in high demand across fast-growing domestic and regional aviation markets, especially in countries like India, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, and the Philippines where more people are flying than ever before. These markets are witnessing rapid population growth, an expanding middle class, and improved airport infrastructure, creating conditions ripe for aviation growth. The remaining 20% of aircraft will be wide-body aircraft, which are typically used for long-haul international flights. Demand for these aircraft is expected to come from countries with large international hubs such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore, the United States, Germany, and France. These nations play key roles in global connectivity, acting as transfer points between continents and regions. China is set to dominate the demand, with Airbus projecting the country will need over 9,000 new aircraft by 2044, more than 20% of the global total. This makes China the single largest aviation market outside the U.S., with growth driven by a mix of expanding domestic travel, regional connections, and increasing international operations. India, already among the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, is expected to require more than 2,500 new aircraft over the same period. The Indian government's push to improve regional connectivity through the UDAN scheme, combined with a young population and rapid urbanization, continues to fuel the country’s aviation boom. The Middle East, with ambitious aviation projects like Saudi Arabia’s NEOM airport, UAE’s Al Maktoum International Airport, and Qatar’s long-term expansion plans, will remain a key region for wide-body orders. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar are actively investing in new-generation aircraft to support their growing fleets and airline ambitions. In Africa, while demand is smaller in absolute terms, the continent is expected to double its fleet size. Countries like Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and South Africa are projected to see strong growth, especially in intra-African connectivity, which has been historically underserved. Airbus estimates that the global passenger traffic will grow by 3.6% annually over the next 20 years. This growth is consistent across emerging and developed markets and is driven by a mix of population growth, tourism recovery, business travel, and international trade. At the same time, the total number of aircraft in service worldwide is expected to rise from 24,240 aircraft in 2024 to around 48,230 by 2044. By then, nearly 95% of the global fleet will be comprised of new-generation aircraft, underlining the shift toward more fuel-efficient, quieter, and lower-emission designs. Despite ongoing bottlenecks in engine deliveries, avionics, and cabin interiors, Airbus remains committed to delivering 820 aircraft in 2025. While production has been affected in the short term, the long-term outlook remains optimistic. The company continues to ramp up output, particularly for its A320neo family, which remains a global bestseller. The new forecast from Airbus underscores a global aviation industry that is not only recovering but preparing for its next era of expansion, one that is greener, more connected, and more geographically diverse than ever before. With countries across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America contributing significantly to future fleet growth, the next two decades could see air travel become even more accessible and essential to economies worldwide.

Gujarat, India: A tragic aviation disaster unfolded on the morning of June 12, 2025, when Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed just seconds after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The flight, which was en route to London Gatwick, carried 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, 241 individuals have been confirmed dead, making it one of the deadliest air crashes in Indian civil aviation history. The only confirmed survivor is Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British National who was seated in the rear cabin section. He is currently receiving treatment at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, and is said to be in stable condition. Authorities confirmed that at least five people on the ground, all believed to be medical students and staff at the nearby BJ Medical College, also lost their lives when the aircraft struck parts of the college complex, including a hostel and a mess building. Airline and Government Response Air India, now a part of the Tata Group, confirmed the crash and has extended its condolences. CEO Campbell Wilson addressed the media later that day, stating that "no speculation will be entertained at this stage" and affirming full cooperation with investigators. He also announced that all affected families will be supported financially and medically, as per international and domestic aviation laws. The airline is reportedly working closely with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and international partners including the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a visit to Gujarat at the time, visited the crash site in the afternoon and later met with the survivor and local rescue personnel. In a brief statement, he called the crash “a national tragedy” and assured the public that “no detail will be overlooked” in the forthcoming investigation. Initial Findings and Speculative Theories Preliminary data retrieved from ADS-B trackers indicates that the aircraft reached a maximum altitude of just 625 feet before it began a sharp descent. A brief MAYDAY call was made by the pilots shortly before radio contact was lost. The aircraft came down within 49 seconds of liftoff, indicating what experts describe as a catastrophic systems or performance failure. Authorities have since recovered the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) from the crash site. Both are being sent to a secure laboratory for analysis under supervision from Indian and international safety investigators. A formal report from the DGCA is expected to be released only after all data is decoded and verified. While the official cause remains unknown, some early speculation has emerged within aviation circles. Multiple former pilots and aircraft engineers, including Alastair Rosenschein and Prof. Ahmed Busnaina, suggest that video footage and eyewitness reports hint at a potential flap or slat misconfiguration. In several verified clips, the aircraft's landing gear remained extended far longer than standard procedures typically allow, and the aircraft appeared to struggle with lift. This has led to the theory that either the flaps failed to deploy correctly or were improperly set for takeoff, both of which can severely impair the 787’s ability to generate adequate lift at low speeds. Others have pointed to the possibility of an engine thrust asymmetry or compressor stall, though this remains speculative. A source close to GE Aerospace, the engine manufacturer for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, confirmed they have dispatched technical experts to support the investigation but declined to offer comments pending formal findings. Safety Record, Financial Impact and Fleet Review The DGCA has not ruled out any cause, including potential pilot error, though Air India confirmed both pilots had over 8,000 hours of combined flying experience and were recently re-certified on the 787 platform. The aircraft itself had been inducted in 2017 and reportedly underwent scheduled maintenance just 18 days prior to the incident. No outstanding technical complaints were reported in the days leading up to the crash. This marks the first-ever fatal crash of a Boeing 787 aircraft, a type that has logged over a million flight hours globally since its entry into service in 2011. The accident has already triggered scrutiny of Air India’s operational safety standards and the DGCA’s oversight mechanisms. According to industry sources cited by The Guardian, a temporary suspension or audit of all 787 operations in India is under “active consideration,” although no formal announcement has been made. Financially, the accident could become one of the costliest single-aircraft losses in history, with combined insurance claims expected to exceed $1.5 billion, factoring in hull loss, liability coverage, and third-party claims. Ongoing Investigation and Support Efforts As of now, rescue and recovery operations at the site have concluded, and forensic identification of the deceased is ongoing. Compensation procedures are being initiated under the Montreal Convention, and special assistance desks have been established by Air India at both Ahmedabad and London Gatwick. A conclusive statement on the cause of the crash will likely take weeks, if not months. Until then, the focus remains on supporting affected families, securing flight operations, and ensuring a transparent and data-driven investigation.

Washington D.C., United States: In a landmark move for the future of air travel, the United States has officially lifted its nearly 50-year-old ban on civilian supersonic flights over land, clearing a major hurdle that has long held back the comeback of high-speed commercial aviation. The reversal of the 1973 regulation marks a significant policy shift and is expected to reshape the aviation landscape in the coming decades. The decision was confirmed through an executive order signed by President Donald Trump earlier this month. The order directs the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to update its rules and certification standards for supersonic aircraft, specifically those that can operate with reduced noise levels. While this does not mean an immediate return of Concorde-like aircraft to the skies, it lays the legal groundwork for aerospace companies to test and eventually launch next-generation supersonic jets designed to fly over populated areas without causing disruptive sonic booms. The original 1973 ban was introduced following widespread public concern over the loud sonic booms generated by the Concorde, which could be heard and felt on the ground. These concerns, coupled with environmental and operational limitations, confined supersonic commercial flight to transoceanic routes only. As a result, the Concorde, though technologically advanced for its time, was restricted to operating primarily between cities like London and New York. With modern engineering advancements, however, new aircraft designs are now able to minimize or eliminate the traditional boom associated with breaking the sound barrier. Companies like Boom Supersonic, NASA, and Lockheed Martin have been working on low-boom and "quiet supersonic" technologies for several years. The lifting of the ban gives these developers a long-awaited green light to move forward with real-world testing and route planning for overland operations. Boom Supersonic, a Denver-based aerospace company, is leading the commercial supersonic race with its flagship airliner Overture, designed to fly at Mach 1.7 with 64–80 passengers. The aircraft aims to operate on sustainable aviation fuel and is backed by major airlines including United and American. The company’s smaller test jet, the XB-1, recently broke the sound barrier during flight testing in California, marking a key milestone toward its 2029 commercial goal. Lockheed Martin, in partnership with NASA, is developing the X-59 QueSST (Quiet Supersonic Technology) aircraft. Unlike commercial models, the X-59 is a research jet built to demonstrate low-boom supersonic flight aiming to reduce sonic booms to a soft “thump.” The data from this project will support future noise regulations and pave the way for civilian supersonic travel over land. FAA officials have stated that this is not a blanket approval for all supersonic aircraft but a carefully controlled shift. Any new aircraft seeking to fly over land at supersonic speeds will still need to comply with stringent noise regulations and complete thorough testing and certification. This includes proving that their noise levels are comparable to those of subsonic aircraft during takeoff, landing, and cruise. The change is already being hailed by aviation industry leaders and investors as a turning point. With the regulatory obstacle removed, companies can now confidently accelerate development timelines and raise funding for commercial production. Boom Supersonic, for instance, recently completed successful flight tests of its prototype, the XB-1, and is targeting a 2029 debut for its full-scale Overture airliner. The lifting of the ban also places the U.S. in a leading role in shaping global supersonic policy. Other countries are expected to watch closely, and a successful implementation could prompt similar regulatory shifts in Europe, Asia, and beyond. While environmental groups have expressed concerns about fuel use and emissions, manufacturers are emphasizing the use of sustainable aviation fuels and efficient engine technologies in their designs. This move revives a long-dormant dream in commercial aviation, the ability to fly from coast to coast in under three hours. With development already in motion and regulatory doors now open, the return of supersonic passenger travel is no longer a matter of “if,” but “when.”

New Delhi, India: In a significant reform for pilot licensing in India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will officially begin conducting the Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical) or RTR(A) exam from November 2025, a responsibility that has until now been managed by the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) wing of the Ministry of Communications. This update was first reported by The Hindu following official communication from DGCA sources. This move signals a long-awaited shift aimed at modernising the examination process, improving transparency, and bringing the radio communication licensing directly under the civil aviation regulator. The RTR(A) exam is a compulsory requirement for all pilots seeking a Commercial or Private Pilot Licence in India, as it certifies a pilot's ability to communicate with Air Traffic Control (ATC), a non-negotiable skill in daily aviation operations. The DGCA had been given control of this examination in 2023, but full implementation was delayed due to procedural adjustments, system setup, and resource alignment. With the groundwork now complete, DGCA officials have confirmed that the first sessions under their supervision will begin in November 2025. According to the communication shared with The Hindu, detailed guidelines and schedules will be announced soon. This reform is expected to bring several key benefits to aspiring pilots and the broader aviation training ecosystem: Unified Oversight: With DGCA managing both theoretical exams and the RTR(A) exam, the entire pilot licensing process will now be under one authority, reducing confusion and improving coordination. Faster Processing: Earlier delays in scheduling RTR(A) tests under WPC often led to months-long waits. DGCA is expected to offer more frequent and timely exam windows. Better Relevance: WPC was a telecommunications authority, not aviation-specific. DGCA’s involvement means that the content and evaluation will be better aligned with real cockpit radio procedures and international norms. Improved Fairness: Pilots and instructors have long pointed to inconsistencies in the old system. DGCA’s testing protocol is expected to offer a more standardised, transparent, and tech-enabled evaluation process. This is especially important for students progressing through India’s CPL training pipeline, where delays in RTR(A) often held up licence issuance even after all other requirements were met. With DGCA now in control, the RTR(A) exam will be treated with the same regulatory seriousness as other aviation-specific assessments. The aviation community has largely welcomed the announcement, calling it a long-overdue upgrade to a process that had been out of step with modern training needs. Training organisations, students, and instructors are now looking forward to the release of official guidelines from DGCA in the coming weeks.

Khajuraho, India: A training aircraft operated by the Indian Flying Academy made an emergency landing at Khajuraho Airport on Tuesday after experiencing a serious technical snag involving the landing gear. The incident occurred during a routine flight training sortie and has since triggered a regulatory probe by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). According to airport authorities and official sources, the training aircraft encountered a malfunction in its rear right landing gear shortly after takeoff. In response, the crew chose to remain airborne for nearly two hours in a holding pattern. This decision was made to reduce the onboard fuel load and minimize the risk of fire during the emergency landing. As part of standard emergency protocol, foam was sprayed on the runway to further enhance safety conditions for the returning aircraft. The aircraft landed on two functional wheels at around 3:40 PM. Upon touchdown, the aircraft skidded off the runway due to the failed gear, but both the flight instructor and trainee pilot on board escaped unharmed. The situation was promptly brought under control by the airport's emergency response teams. No fire was reported, and there was no disruption to commercial operations at the airport following the incident. Authorities from the DGCA have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the root cause of the landing gear failure. Preliminary reports suggest that the crew followed all necessary safety protocols and managed the situation with composure and professionalism, thereby avoiding a major accident. This incident brings renewed focus to safety practices at Indian flying schools, which have been under increased scrutiny. The DGCA has recently emphasized the importance of standardizing training operations across flight academies and ensuring that infrastructure, aircraft maintenance, and instructor qualifications meet rigorous aviation standards. Additionally, new transparency directives now require flying schools to publicly disclose their fleet details, student-instructor ratios, and CPL training timelines, allowing students and parents to make informed decisions. While no injuries were reported in the Khajuraho emergency, the event serves as a reminder of the real-time challenges faced in flight training environments and the critical importance of emergency preparedness. The Indian Flying Academy has not yet released a detailed statement but is said to be cooperating fully with regulatory officials in the ongoing inquiry. Further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.

San Diego, United States: A tragic small plane crash off the coast of San Diego has claimed the lives of all six people on board, including the pilot and five passengers. The aircraft, a twin-engine Cessna 414, went down in the Pacific Ocean just minutes after taking off from San Diego International Airport on Sunday afternoon. According to officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had departed from San Diego shortly after 12:30 p.m. and was reportedly en route back to Phoenix, Arizona. Moments into the flight, air traffic controllers instructed the pilot to climb to an altitude of 4,000 feet. However, flight tracking data revealed that the plane was struggling to gain altitude and remained around 1,000 feet before it rapidly disappeared from radar. Distress calls from the pilot included repeated “Mayday” alerts before the aircraft crashed into the ocean approximately three to five miles off the coast of Point Loma. Witnesses in the area reported hearing the calls over radio transmissions, and authorities confirmed that an emergency was declared shortly before the plane vanished. The U.S. Coast Guard, San Diego Harbor Police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and San Diego lifeguards responded immediately to the incident, launching a large-scale search and recovery operation. A debris field was located in waters estimated to be around 200 feet deep. The Coast Guard later confirmed that all six individuals on board were found deceased. The Cessna 414 involved in the crash had previously been registered to Optimal Health Systems, a company based in Arizona. However, the company has stated publicly that it sold the aircraft in 2023 and is no longer associated with its ownership or operation. As of now, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), FAA, and Coast Guard are jointly investigating the cause of the crash. Investigators are reviewing flight data, air traffic control communications, and maintenance records to determine what led to the fatal incident. Recovery of wreckage and any flight recording devices will also play a key role in the ongoing probe. Officials have not yet released the identities of those on board, pending notification of next of kin. This incident adds to a growing number of general aviation accidents reported in recent months across the United States. Aviation safety authorities continue to emphasize the importance of strict compliance with flight planning, maintenance standards, and pilot qualifications, especially in small aircraft operations. Colombo, Sri Lanka: In a significant step toward reviving its long-haul capabilities, SriLankan Airlines has taken delivery of its first widebody aircraft in over seven years. The Airbus A330-200, bearing registration 4R-ALT, landed at Bandaranaike International Airport on June 3 and is expected to enter service within weeks. The newly acquired aircraft has been leased for a period of eight years from Carlyle Aviation Partners. Though nearly 14 years old, the twin-aisle jet is expected to play a pivotal role in the airline’s interim fleet strategy. Configured in a two-class layout with a total of 260 seats, the A330-200 previously operated under Garuda Indonesia and South Korea’s Fly Gangwon. The lease agreement, reportedly valued at USD 275,000 per month, reflects SriLankan’s current approach to balance operational needs with financial constraints. The airline had previously faced challenges with its long-haul fleet, including engine issues and the cancellation of newer aircraft orders, which led to reduced connectivity on major international routes. According to airline officials, the latest widebody addition is the first of at least three aircraft SriLankan aims to induct in the near term. The management has initiated talks to lease two more widebody jets by the end of 2025. These aircraft are expected to support the reopening of long-haul routes that were suspended over the past few years, including services to Beijing, key cities in Australia, and parts of East Africa. The arrival of 4R-ALT marks the beginning of what the airline describes as a “measured rebuilding process.” In its latest five-year strategic plan submitted to the Sri Lankan government, SriLankan Airlines has outlined its ambition to double its current fleet by 2030. The expansion plan is expected to include a mix of widebody and narrowbody aircraft, with an emphasis on operational sustainability and route profitability. The announcement comes days after an unrelated incident involving SriLankan Airlines Flight UL306, which was en route from Colombo to Singapore on June 5 when it experienced a technical fault mid-flight. The aircraft was diverted and safely landed at Kuala Namu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia. All passengers and crew were reported safe, and a relief flight was arranged to continue the journey to Singapore on June 6. SriLankan Airlines currently operates a modest fleet, with several aircraft approaching the upper limits of their service life. As the national carrier navigates a path toward financial recovery and increased regional competition, the arrival of widebody aircraft such as the A330-200 is expected to be instrumental in restoring long-haul operations and rebuilding passenger confidence. While challenges remain, the strategic focus on fleet renewal and route expansion signals a forward-looking approach for Sri Lanka’s flag carrier as it attempts to reassert its presence in the international aviation market.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
