Karachi: An IndiGo flight 6E 63 traveling from New Delhi to Jeddah made an emergency landing at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport late on December 13, 2024, after a passenger onboard suffered a serious medical emergency.
Timeline of Events
The plane, which left New Delhi at 9:15 PM, was scheduled to land in Jeddah at 12:25 AM. However, during the flight, a 55-year-old Indian male passenger (according to GEO News) became seriously unwell. Despite obtaining oxygen and initial treatment from the crew, his health did not improve.
The pilot contacted Karachi’s air traffic control (ATC) to request an emergency landing on humanitarian grounds. The request was immediately granted, and the plane landed safely at 11:45 PM. Upon landing, a medical team boarded the aircraft to provide treatment. IndiGo later confirmed, “The captain diverted the flight to Karachi, where a doctor attended to the passenger upon arrival.”
After necessary medical intervention and formalities, the flight initially returned to New Delhi at 4:00 AM to ensure further assistance for the passenger. It then resumed its journey, departing for Jeddah at 5:47 AM and finally landing at 8:47 AM, approximately nine hours behind schedule.
Humanitarian Collaboration Across Borders
“The air traffic control allowed the IndiGo aircraft to land in Karachi on humanitarian grounds, where a medical team provided emergency treatment to the passenger,” a source from Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) stated.
Past Emergency Landings in Karachi
This is not the first time that an Indian airline has made an emergency landing in Karachi. Due to technical problems, a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Dubai was forced to land in Karachi in July 2022, leaving passengers stuck for hours. Similarly, another IndiGo flight made an emergency landing in Karachi the same month due to mechanical issues.
