India: “One cabin bag” rule – The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has suggested new limitations on hand bags on flights, a substantial change aimed at streamlining air travel while improving security.

Single Hand Baggage Allowance: Passengers are permitted to carry only one piece of hand baggage on board, applicable to both domestic and international flights.

Economy and Premium Economy Classes: Maximum of 7 kg.

Business and First Classes: Maximum of 10 kg.

Size Restrictions: Hand baggage dimensions must not exceed 55 cm (height) x 40 cm (length) x 20 cm (width).

Mandatory Check-In for Additional Baggage: Any baggage exceeding the specified limits must be checked in before boarding.

Passengers who booked their tickets before May 4, 2024, are exempt from these new regulations and can carry:

Economy Class: Up to 8 kg.

Premium Economy Class: Up to 10 kg.

First or Business Class: Up to 12 kg.

The BCAS, in collaboration with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), has implemented these measures to:

Enhance Security: Streamline security checks by reducing the number of carry-on items.

Improve Efficiency: Facilitate smoother passenger movement through security checkpoints.

Address Congestion: Mitigate delays caused by increased air travel and airport congestion.

Airlines such as IndiGo and Air India have changed their luggage policy to meet the new standards.
