As an aspiring Pilot, a candidate may look for a guidance on what needs to be done to become a Pilot. In present Internet age, social media is flooded with content related to How to become an Airline Pilot. In addition to that, you may find many individuals and institutes, who are providing classes for theory subjects and assisting in documentation. Most of these individuals or institutes are moderately okay in providing claimed service. However, authenticity of content shared on videos via social media platforms have reasonable doubt. A term we hear now very often. Although, cadet pilot program is not new. The concept is old with Air India sponsoring few selected students at IGRUA (Indira Gandhi Rastriya Udan Academy). Although, that time, Air India used to assure job and sponsor flying. Now, in present low fare regime, the meaning of Cadet Pilot Program has changed by movement of financial burden to student. Present Airlines, shortlist eligible candidates based on few aptitude tests and medicals and put them on a journey starting from ab-initio Flight training to make them ready to join as entry level cockpit crew i.e. Junior First Officer. The typical cost range for such cadet Pilot program is around INR 90 lacs to 1 Crore. The program cost is around 40% more if the same requirements are done without the program. The premium pricing is to ensure job probability.
To fly an Airplane with Turbine engines, one needs to be trained on the type of the aircraft to be flown. The reason for such specific training also known as Type rating training is required to familiarize through complex aircraft systems and its performance. Type training is a step that comes once you have your Pilot license in hand which allows you to fly as a pilot in command. Type training is required for aircraft ranging from Turbo prop to Turbofan powered aircraft. The training is provided by organizations approved to do the same. Such organizations are commonly known as Type Rating Training Organizations (TRTO). Type rating training for entry level candidates is for Second in command training.
Type rating training comprises of Ground classes, flying on full flight simulators and check. The course spans around 6-8 weeks and cost around US$ 20,000. However, Q for popular airline aircrafts such as Airbus 320 or Boeing 737 is pretty long. As mentioned, training is imparted on Full Flight Simulator and not on real aircraft since any scenarios required for training can be simulated on simulator and surely a cost saver as well.
DGCA has approved several facilities in India & abroad to conduct Aircraft Type Rating Training on the approved simulators.
