Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), is a greenfield project in Maharashtra, India, is slated to start operations in mid-2025. This development is expected to revolutionize the aviation landscape of Western India enabling accessible international connections for passengers who now use airports in Mumbai, Hyderabad, or Bangalore.

NMIA, a public-private partnership between Adani Airports Holdings Limited and CIDCO, was developed at Rs 18,000 crore. Named in memory of the late community rights activist and former Member of Parliament Dinkar Balu Patil.

Inauguration: The airport is scheduled to be inaugurated on April 17, 2025.

Domestic Operations: Commercial domestic flights are expected to begin by mid-May 2025.

International Operations: International flight services are anticipated to commence by July 2025.

Runways: NMIA will feature two parallel runways, each measuring 3,700 meters in length, capable of handling simultaneous flight operations.

Terminals: Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the airport will have three interconnected terminal buildings, aesthetically inspired by the lotus flower. These terminals will offer modern amenities, including food courts, lounges, and travelators. In its initial phase, the airport will include a low-cost carrier terminal with a capacity to handle two million passengers annually.

Cargo Facilities: The domestic cargo terminal will span 33,000 square meters, while the international cargo terminal will cover 23,700 square meters. During Phase 1, NMIA is projected to handle 0.8 million tonnes of cargo annually.

NMIA is set to become India’s first airport with multimodal connectivity, integrating various transportation networks:

Road Access: The airport will be accessible via National Highway 4B, the Sion-Panvel Highway, and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). Additionally, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) plans to construct the six-lane Ulwe Coastal Road and Kharghar Coastal Road to further enhance connectivity.

Rail and Metro: The airport will be connected to the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 and the proposed Mumbai Metro Line 8 (Gold Line). There are also plans for NMIA to serve as the terminal station for the proposed Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail corridor.

The operationalization of NMIA is expected to:

Alleviate Congestion: Reduce the burden on the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, thereby improving efficiency and passenger experience.

Boost Capacity: In its first phase, NMIA will handle 20 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 90 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year by 2032.

Economic Growth: Stimulate regional development, create employment opportunities, and enhance trade and tourism in Western India.
