Aviation Today

In an effort to reduce operational costs, Kannur International Airport (KIAL) is set to implement a solar energy project, drawing inspiration from the highly successful solar initiative at Kochi International Airport (CIAL). This eco-friendly project is expected to mirror the Kochi model, making Kannur one of the airports utilizing renewable energy to power its operations.

The solar plant will be installed in the car parking area and surrounding locations within the airport premises. KIAL ensures that the project will integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure, meaning land management plans and other operational systems will remain unaffected. Solar panels will be mounted on top of parking spaces, transforming them into shaded rooftop parking areas for vehicles.

The project is projected to be up and running within the current financial year, delivering substantial savings for the airport. With an estimated investment of ₹18 crore, the project is expected to break even within three to four years. Monthly savings are anticipated to reach ₹50 lakh, resulting in an annual saving of ₹6 crore, making the initiative a cost-effective solution for KIAL.

Inspired by the solar project at Nedumbassery International Airport, the move was fast-tracked after shareholders of KIAL called for measures to ease the financial burden on the airport. Following these discussions, the airport management quickly mobilized plans to bring the project to life. The solar plant at Kochi Airport, which is a nationally recognized model, served as the blueprint for Kannur’s upcoming project.

The annual general meeting of KIAL shareholders is set for next Monday, where further discussions regarding the solar energy project and its progress will take place.
