IndiGo plans to connect NMIA to major domestic cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, North Goa (Mopa), Jaipur, Nagpur, Kochi, and Mangalore. Ticket bookings for these routes are now open. Akasa Air will begin flights from NMIA on the same day, starting with Delhi, and will gradually introduce services to Ahmedabad, Goa (Mopa), and Kochi. The new airport, located near Ulwe in Panvel, is designed to complement the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and alleviate congestion in India’s busiest aviation hub. Phase 1 of NMIA features a single terminal and one runway, capable of handling approximately 20 million passengers annually, with expansion plans to increase capacity in subsequent phases. Early fare comparisons indicate a divergence between airlines. For instance, IndiGo’s one-way ticket from NMIA to Delhi is priced around ₹7,350, whereas Akasa Air offers the same route at ₹5,558, reflecting different pricing strategies and user-development fees at the new airport. The message, which claimed explosives had been planted at multiple locations, prompted emergency responses and heightened screening measures, authorities confirmed. The email was received by IndiGo’s grievance portal, warning of possible attacks within 24 hours. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) immediately initiated security drills at key airports. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) was among the first to respond after the Delhi Fire Service received a call about a suspected bomb at Terminal 3 around 4 p.m. Security teams, bomb disposal squads, and sniffer units were deployed, and the terminal underwent a full inspection. New Delhi, India: More than 800 flights were delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) after a technical failure disrupted air traffic control systems on Friday, causing widespread operational chaos at one of the world’s busiest airports. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed that a malfunction occurred in the airport’s Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) , a critical platform that generates and distributes flight plans to controllers and pilots. The failure forced the ATC to manually process flight plans, drastically slowing departures through Friday. “The system developed a technical issue late Thursday evening, leading to temporary delays in flight departures,” the AAI said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest.” According to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, over 800 flights experienced delays, with more than 175 departures affected on Friday morning alone. The average delay was around 55 minutes, but several international routes were held back much longer. Domestic carriers, including IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India, reported schedule disruptions. IndiGo’s shares dropped 1.5 % in response. An ITA Airways flight to Rome was delayed by nearly two hours, while a Virgin Atlantic service to London took off more than an hour behind schedule. Phase 1 of NMIA features Terminal 1 and Runway 1, equipped with 10 bus gates and 29 aero bridges. The facility is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 90 million in future phases. Its lotus-inspired architecture includes 12 sculptural columns resembling petals and 17 mega columns supporting the roof, reflecting India’s cultural heritage. Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, about 37 kilometers from South Mumbai, NMIA is integrated with multimodal transport options, including metro, roadways, and public transport systems, ensuring seamless connectivity. The draft framework applies to airports handling more than 3.5 million passengers annually. It sets benchmarks for maximum wait times at terminal entry points, check-in counters, security screening, immigration desks, and baggage belts. Failure to meet these standards could result in reduced tariffs, while airports exceeding them may receive incentives. AERA’s proposal also focuses on the upkeep of basic passenger facilities, including clean washrooms, seating, and trolleys. Adoption of technology, such as Digi Yatra and immigration e-gates, is part of the criteria aimed at improving efficiency and passenger experience. “Introducing a structured service quality framework will ensure passengers receive consistent and improved service levels across major airports,” AERA said in the consultation paper. Poland, Europe: Poland’s Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) , one of Europe’s most ambitious transport infrastructure projects, has reached a major milestone with the official approval of its passenger terminal design, moving the €30–32.5 billion development closer to construction. The government-backed mega hub is projected to handle up to 44 million passengers annually by 2032, with integrated high-speed rail links designed to transform regional and international connectivity. According to the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny company, the terminal and underground railway station design, developed by Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, has been formally handed over and accepted. The documentation is now being prepared for submission to regional authorities to obtain building permits. The facility will span approximately 450,000 square meters, making it nearly three times the size of Warsaw Chopin Airport’s terminal. The three-level terminal layout will place check-in facilities and Schengen departures on the top level (+2), non-Schengen arrivals and transfer areas on level +1, and baggage reclaim alongside bus connections on the ground level. Initial capacity is set at 34 million passengers per year, with expansion potential to 44 million. The design also includes up to 67 aircraft stands, 140 check-in desks, and the ability to process up to 11,000 passengers per hour. The construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, starting with deep foundation works. The underground railway station and connecting tunnel are targeted for completion by 2029, with the entire airport planned to become operational by the end of 2032. A general contractor tender is currently open, while other tenders including for the baggage handling system are already in progress. The company anticipates awarding contracts worth nearly PLN 30 billion by the end of 2025. With an estimated total cost exceeding €30 billion, CPK is positioned as a direct competitor to hubs such as London Heathrow and Dubai International. The mega hub will integrate aviation, high-speed rail, and road networks, with almost 2,000 kilometers of new high-speed lines planned. These will link major Polish cities and connect to the EU’s TEN-T corridors, including the strategic Rail Baltica route to the Baltic states. The Polish government under Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed in June 2024 that the CPK project would proceed, albeit with adjustments to ensure it complements rather than entirely replaces existing airports in Warsaw. Speaking to Reuters, Tusk said the plan reflects both the scale of Poland’s economic ambitions and the need for integrated transport solutions.
