Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Etihad Airways delivered its strongest financial and operational performance in the airline’s history for the full year 2025, marking robust growth, network expansion and enhanced customer experience, the carrier announced on 24 February 2026. The Abu Dhabi-based flag carrier reported a profit after tax of AED 2.6 billion (US $698 million), a 47 % year-on-year increase compared with 2024. This marked the airline’s fourth consecutive year of profitability and reflected sustained demand across global markets. Etihad carried 22.4 million passengers in 2025, up 21 % year-on-year, supported by a 21 % increase in capacity and available seat kilometres (ASK) of 111.5 billion. Passenger load factor improved to 88.3 % (+2 percentage points), illustrating strong demand across its international network. Total revenue rose 21 % year-on-year to AED 30.7 billion (US $8.4 billion), driven by both passenger and cargo operations. Passenger revenue jumped 24 % to AED 25.8 billion (US $7.0 billion), while cargo revenue increased 8 % to AED 4.5 billion (US $1.2 billion), supported by higher capacity and cargo volumes that grew 9 % to more than 700,000 leg tonnes. Operating performance strengthened significantly. EBITDA climbed 37 % year-on-year to AED 6.3 billion (US $1.7 billion), resulting in a 20 % EBITDA margin (+2 percentage points). Etihad’s profit margin improved to 8.4 % (+1.5 percentage points), more than double the global airline industry average of 3.9 %, according to IATA estimates. Strong cash generation remained a hallmark of the year, with operating cash flow approaching AED 8.0 billion (more than US $2 billion). This enabled the airline to fully fund its capital expenditure requirements and reduce debt. Etihad expanded its operating fleet to 127 aircraft, the largest in its history, with 29 aircraft added during 2025. The enlarged fleet supported growth across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. The airline’s network grew from 94 to 110 destinations, bolstering global connectivity and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s positioning as a major aviation hub. Etihad’s growth helped drive tourism to Abu Dhabi. Point-to-point traffic rose by 900,000 passengers to 5.5 million compared with 2024, while the stopover visitor count more than doubled to 170,000. The airline accounted for approximately 50 % of total passenger growth across UAE carriers in 2025, highlighting its central role in the nation’s air travel sector. Etihad continued investing in customer experience with product upgrades across cabins, digital enhancements and expanded services. Overall net promoter scores improved year-on-year. The airline also received more than 25 international awards for customer experience, safety and operational performance. Throughout 2025, Etihad welcomed more than 3,200 new employees and promoted around 2,200 staff, including new cabin crew and pilots, further strengthening its operational capabilities. Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said, “2025 has been a defining year for Etihad, delivering our strongest performance across every key metric and marking our fourth consecutive year of profitability. These results confirm that our strategy is working, growing sustainably, strengthening our financial position, and continuing to deliver a high-quality experience for our guests.” With a strengthened financial position, an expanded fleet and a broader global footprint, Etihad enters 2026 poised for continued growth, deeper market penetration and ongoing contribution to Abu Dhabi’s economic and tourism strategies.

Guadalajara, Mexico: Guadalajara International Airport experienced significant disruption on Sunday, February 22, 2026, as widespread violence erupted across the state of Jalisco following the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Mexican Army officials confirmed that 59-year-old Oseguera Cervantes , one of the country’s most wanted drug lords with a $15 million US bounty on his head, also had a long history of violent crime and trafficking, was killed during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco on Sunday morning. Four cartel members were killed at the scene, while another three died while being flown to Mexico City, among them El Mencho. Two alleged cartel members were arrested with weapons that included rocket launchers capable of bringing down aircraft and destroying armoured vehicles. The raid involved federal forces with intelligence support and resulted in multiple deaths among cartel members. The announcement of his death immediately sparked waves of retaliatory violence by cartel gunmen across Jalisco and neighboring states, including roadblocks with burning vehicles, clashes with security forces, and sporadic gunfire in urban peripheries. Videos circulated widely on social media on Sunday showing passengers at Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) running, taking cover, or expressing alarm at the sounds of distant gunfire. Some reports described fears of an “active shooter” near the terminals. However, airport operator Pacific Airport Group (GAP) issued an official statement clarifying that no gunfire or violent incident occurred inside the airport terminals themselves. According to GAP, the airport was operating normally and there were no confirmed security breaches within its controlled facilities. The National Guard and federal security forces were deployed to the airport precincts as a precaution to ensure safety amid the regional unrest. Despite the airport’s assertion that operations were secure, numerous airlines proactively canceled flights to and from Guadalajara and other Mexican destinations due to broader security concerns and travel disruptions: United Airlines confirmed cancellation of all Sunday flights to Guadalajara (GDL) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR). Southwest Airlines canceled flights arriving at and departing from Puerto Vallarta. American Airlines reportedly canceled remaining Sunday service to Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and Mazatlán. Other international carriers, including Air Canada, Delta Airlines and Alaska Airlines temporarily suspended operations to affected Mexican airports. Some U.S. airlines also offered travel waivers and advised passengers to monitor flight status due to the evolving situation. Industry tracking data indicated that nearly half of all flights to or from Guadalajara that afternoon and evening were either canceled or delayed as carriers revised schedules in response to regional unrest and blocked access routes caused by cartel actions. The airlines acted out of “safety first” caution as access to GDL and other transport nodes became unpredictable due to cartel-initiated blockades.

Frankfurt, Germany: Germany’s flagship carrier Lufthansa was forced to cancel nearly 800 flights on Thursday after pilots and cabin crew staged coordinated industrial action, disrupting travel for around 100,000 passengers . The 24-hour strike began shortly after midnight on Thursday, February 12, and affected most Lufthansa-operated services, particularly at its main hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, where departure boards showed widespread cancellations throughout the day. According to multiple industry reports, Lufthansa removed approximately 800 flights from its schedule, representing more than half of its planned daily operations. The airline said the walkout caused significant disruption to both short-haul and long-haul services, including intercontinental departures. Lufthansa confirmed that about 100,000 passengers were impacted by the cancellations. The airline implemented large-scale rebooking measures, transferring travellers to partner airlines within the Lufthansa Group including Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines as well as offering rail alternatives within Germany in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn. Passengers were advised not to travel to the airport unless they had received confirmation that their flight was operating. Lufthansa also stated that customers whose flights were cancelled were eligible for full refunds or rebooking at no extra cost. Under European passenger rights rules, affected travellers may also be entitled to compensation ranging from €250 to €600, as airline staff strikes are generally not classified as extraordinary circumstances. The strike was triggered by parallel disputes involving two major unions: Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), representing pilots, over disagreements related to pension schemes and retirement benefits. UFO (Unabhängige Flugbegleiter Organisation), representing cabin crew, over job security, working conditions and collective agreements, including concerns linked to Lufthansa’s regional subsidiary operations. The strike was driven by unresolved labour disputes between staff unions and Lufthansa management, the main issues were pension benefits, job security and stalled contract negotiations. Union leaders said negotiations with Lufthansa management had stalled after months of talks, prompting the one-day walkout. Lufthansa management described the action as “disproportionate and unnecessary”, warning that the disruption would affect not only passengers but also Germany’s wider aviation network during a high-demand travel period. As of Friday, February 13, Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed that the strike had ended as scheduled, and that flight operations were largely returning to normal. No further industrial action has been announced at this stage. The airline said most services were operating according to schedule on Friday, although minor residual delays and isolated cancellations remained possible due to aircraft and crew repositioning. The disruption coincided with a busy week in Germany, with international travel demand elevated due to major events such as the Munich Security Conference and the opening of the Berlin International Film Festival, amplifying the impact on business and diplomatic travel. Lufthansa operates more than 700 aircraft and carries over 100 million passengers annually, making it one of Europe’s largest airline groups. The strike represents one of the most significant single-day disruptions to its operations in recent years.
