Mumbai, INDIA: Since commencing operations in August 2022, Akasa Air has marked several significant milestones, demonstrating rapid growth in the Indian aviation sector. The airline has successfully flown over 17 million revenue passengers and completed more than 100,000 departures within this short period.
This operational tempo has now reached over 150 daily flights, as announced by the airline on Tuesday. Alongside passenger growth, Akasa Air has also expanded its logistics capabilities, transporting over 100,000 tonnes of cargo and operating 98 charter flights.
The airline currently connects 23 domestic destinations across India and five international destinations in the Gulf and Middle East: Doha, Jeddah, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait City. Its fleet stands at 27 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, with plans to increase this to 30 by July, despite potential delivery delays related to regulatory scrutiny of Boeing’s 737 program.
This expansion is supported by a recent $135 million funding round led by Premji Invest and other investors, for which the airline is currently seeking regulatory approvals.
Strategic Expansion and Future Outlook
Akasa Air has demonstrated a strong upward trajectory, doubling its passenger traffic from 7.75 million in March 2024 to 16 million a year later. The airline is strategically focusing on expanding its international presence, with a target to increase international operations from the current 18% to 40% of its capacity in the coming years, according to CEO Vinay Dube.
Praveen Iyer, Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted that these achievements within 31 months of operation reflect the airline’s disciplined growth strategy and customer-centric approach. He emphasized the strong demand and customer trust as key drivers for their expansion in both domestic and international markets. The airline’s ability to achieve these numbers underscores its competitive potential on a global scale as it continues to strengthen its footprint.
