UK: Virgin Atlantic has announced a partnership with Joby Aviation to introduce an electric air taxi service in the UK. The collaboration aims to offer zero-emission, short-range flights, providing a faster and more sustainable transportation alternative for travelers.

Virgin Atlantic, a long-haul airline, is known for its customer-focused service and commitment to sustainability in aviation. Joby Aviation is an aerospace company developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for commercial passenger transport.

The initial rollout will focus on city and regional connections from key Virgin Atlantic hubs, including Heathrow and Manchester Airport. Passengers will be able to book air taxi services through Virgin Atlantic’s app, website, and other digital platforms.

Joby Aviation’s eVTOL aircraft is designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers. It can reach speeds of 200 mph and offers a range of approximately 100 miles. The service is expected to reduce travel times significantly. For instance, a trip from Heathrow Airport to Canary Wharf would take just eight minutes, compared to an hour by car. Similarly, the journey from Manchester Airport to Leeds would be cut down to 15 minutes.

Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, emphasized the airline’s commitment to sustainable innovation: “As a leader in sustainability and with innovation firmly in our DNA, we are delighted to be partnering with Joby to bring short-haul, zero-emission flights to airports and cities throughout the UK.”

Virgin Atlantic will assist Joby in navigating UK regulatory approvals and developing landing sites at major airports. The initiative aligns with the UK government’s broader push toward sustainable aviation and urban air mobility solutions.

Joby Aviation has conducted thousands of test flights, including recent demonstrations in New York City, Japan, and South Korea. The company is actively working toward regulatory certification, ensuring the safety and reliability of its air taxi operations before the official launch.

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, highlighted the significance of the partnership:  “Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences makes them the ideal partner as we prepare to launch air taxi services in the UK.”

The venture builds upon the existing alliance between Joby and Delta Air Lines, which holds a significant 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic. The partnership is expected to accelerate the integration of air taxi services in both the US and UK. Pricing for the service is expected to be competitive with premium ground-based ridesharing options.

As the aviation industry moves toward a more sustainable future, the introduction of air taxis could reshape urban transportation, offering faster and cleaner travel alternatives.
