Karachi, Pakistan: An Etihad Airways flight bound for Abu Dhabi made an emergency landing at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport on Friday after the crew reported a technical issue shortly after takeoff.
Flight EY299, operated by an Airbus A320, had departed from Karachi for Abu Dhabi when one of the aircraft’s engines reportedly developed a technical fault. Following standard safety procedures, the flight crew informed air traffic control and requested an immediate return to the departure airport.
The aircraft landed safely at Karachi without incident. Etihad Airways confirmed that the flight returned to Jinnah International Airport shortly after departure due to a technical issue. No injuries were reported.
All 128 passengers on board safely disembarked after landing and were escorted to the airport lounge while airline officials coordinated assistance. Etihad said alternative travel arrangements were being made for the affected passengers.
The aircraft has been taken out of service for inspection, with airline engineers and technical personnel carrying out detailed checks to identify the source of the reported engine problem before the aircraft is cleared to return to operations.
The incident occurred as Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) warned of widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms across Karachi and several parts of Sindh in the coming days. The weather agency also cautioned that a strong monsoon system could trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas, although no official link has been established between the weather conditions and the aircraft’s technical issue. The cause of the engine fault remains under investigation.
