Powered by Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines, the ultra-long-range jet offers up to 8,200 nautical miles of range, a top speed of Mach 0.935, advanced cabin features, and received FAA and EASA certification in April 2025. The latest milestones further reinforce the aircraft's position at the top of the ultra-long-range business jet segment. The G800 secured Gulfstream's 800th city-pair speed record during a nonstop flight from Reykjavik, Iceland, to Savannah, Georgia, covering 2,973 nautical miles (5,505 kilometers) in 5 hours and 52 minutes at an average cruise speed of Mach 0.91. In a separate record-setting mission conducted on June 28, the aircraft flew nonstop from Melbourne, Australia, to Moline, Illinois, covering 8,303 nautical miles (15,377 kilometers) in 16 hours and 56 minutes while maintaining an average cruise speed of Mach 0.85. According to Gulfstream, the flight established the farthest and fastest journey ever completed in business aviation. With these latest accomplishments, Gulfstream's aircraft fleet has accumulated 815 city-pair speed records, including 15 achieved by the G800 since the aircraft entered commercial service in August 2025. Mark Burns, President of Gulfstream, said the achievements reflect the company's continued focus on advancing aircraft performance. "With every new aircraft, Gulfstream continues to push the boundaries of performance for our customers. Reaching our 800th city-pair speed record and completing the farthest fastest flight in our industry's history demonstrates the strength of our next-generation fleet and the advanced capabilities of the G800." The G800 is Gulfstream's longest-range business jet and is powered by Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines. The aircraft is capable of flying 8,200 nautical miles (15,186 kilometers) at Mach 0.85, 8,000 nautical miles (14,816 kilometers) at Mach 0.87, and 7,000 nautical miles (12,964 kilometers) at Mach 0.90, while offering a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935. Designed for ultra-long-haul missions, the aircraft enables nonstop connections between distant city pairs such as Los Angeles-Melbourne and Dubai-Houston, reducing the need for fuel stops while improving operational flexibility. Inside, the G800 shares its cabin architecture with the G700 and features 16 Gulfstream Panoramic Oval Windows, a 2,840-foot cabin altitude while cruising at 41,000 feet, 100% fresh air replenished every two to three minutes, and a plasma ionization air purification system. The interior can be configured with up to four living areas or three living areas plus a dedicated crew compartment, supporting extended intercontinental missions. The aircraft received simultaneous Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) type certification in April 2025, before entering customer service in August 2025 alongside the G700. Gulfstream said city-pair speed records serve as real-world demonstrations of an aircraft's operational capabilities, validating published performance figures under actual flight conditions and providing prospective operators with measurable benchmarks for range, speed and efficiency.

Reykjavík, Iceland: Icelandic budget airline Play Airlines has announced the immediate suspension of all flights and the cessation of its operations on September 29, 2025. The unexpected shutdown has left roughly 1,750 passengers stranded at destinations across Europe and North America. The airline cited ongoing financial difficulties, declining ticket sales, and internal operational challenges as the main reasons behind the abrupt closure. Around 500 employees have lost their jobs due to the closure, including pilots, cabin crew, and administrative staff. Play Airlines has stated that it is working to provide guidance and support to its workforce during the transition. Founded in 2019 by former executives of WOW Air and Primera Air, Play Airlines launched operations in 2021 with the goal of offering affordable transatlantic flights connecting Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport with European and North American cities. While the airline initially gained traction among price-sensitive travelers, it struggled to maintain profitability amid intense competition and rising operational costs. Until Monday morning, Play Airlines operated flights to several European cities such as London Stansted, Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Alicante, and Faro. The final flight from Reykjavik to Stansted landed on time at 10:40 a.m. on Monday. However, the aircraft remains at the airport, and the scheduled return flight to Reykjavik has been cancelled. PLAY Airlines’ shutdown was driven by mounting financial losses that proved unsustainable. At the end of the previous year, the airline reported a loss of $66 million (£49 million), which amounted to roughly £31 per passenger. Although the airline’s most recent financial results in August 2025 projected that profitability might begin in 2026, these expectations never materialized. Aviation analyst Sean Moulton noted that PLAY attempted to replicate WOW Air’s model, linking secondary European cities with the U.S., but faced a limited market and low yields. Even after shifting strategy to focus on point-to-point leisure destinations, the small Icelandic population made it difficult for the airline to succeed independently. The sudden suspension has caused significant disruption for passengers, many of whom are currently stranded abroad. Travelers are advised to contact their credit card providers, travel agencies, or flight insurers for refunds. In addition, some carriers may provide “rescue fares” for affected travelers seeking alternative routes. Play Airlines collapse due to the ongoing challenges faced by low-cost carriers, particularly in the transatlantic market. Iceland has seen multiple budget carriers struggle in recent years, reflecting the volatility and financial pressures inherent in the aviation sector.
