The aircraft, identified as an Airbus A350-941 registered B-LRV, departed Brisbane shortly after midnight and was approximately two hours from landing in Hong Kong when the turbulence struck unexpectedly during breakfast service in the economy cabin. Cathay Pacific confirmed that six cabin crew members and four passengers sustained injuries in the incident. Eight of them were later transported to hospitals in Hong Kong for further medical treatment and observation after the aircraft landed safely at approximately 6:45 a.m. local time, a Cathay spokesman said. Passengers onboard described scenes of panic as the aircraft suddenly dropped in altitude for several seconds. One traveler compared the experience to “free-falling from a drop tower,” while others reported hearing screams throughout the cabin as unsecured items, food trays, coffee cups and mobile phones were thrown into the air. The turbulence reportedly occurred without prior warning while cabin crew were actively serving meals in the aisles, leaving many passengers and crew unrestrained at the time of impact. Several overhead lockers reportedly opened during the violent jolts, while food carts overturned and cabin debris scattered across the aircraft interior. Some reports also indicated that oxygen masks deployed in parts of the cabin following the sudden movement. Photographs circulating on social media after the incident showed extensive cabin disruption, including food-covered aisles, damaged service equipment and scattered personal belongings. One injured flight attendant was reportedly seen being transported in a neck brace after landing. Several passengers said the turbulence appeared to originate from an unexpected weather system or thunderstorm activity encountered during night operations. One passenger said there had been no seatbelt warning prior to the event and speculated that a storm cell may not have been visible on radar in the darkness. However, aviation observers and later reports suggested the aircraft may have encountered severe clear-air turbulence, which can occur suddenly without visible cloud formations or advanced warning to pilots. Medical professionals traveling onboard reportedly assisted injured passengers and crew members for the remainder of the flight until emergency responders boarded the aircraft in Hong Kong. Airport medical teams and ambulances had been placed on standby before arrival after authorities were informed of the turbulence event. Cathay Pacific said the affected passengers and crew received immediate care following the landing and stated that safety remains the airline’s highest priority. The carrier added that it would continue providing assistance to those injured.

The aircraft had already accelerated to nearly 193 km/h when pilots initiated a rejected takeoff (RTO) , a high-risk, time-critical manoeuvre performed at high speed. The crew brought the aircraft to a controlled stop on the runway and immediately ordered an evacuation. Passengers and crew exited using emergency slides as airport fire and rescue services rushed to the scene. Authorities declared a full emergency, the highest level of airport alert, while firefighting teams quickly contained the blaze. Four passengers along with one crew member sustained injuries during the evacuation, largely attributed to slide descent and panic movement. Most injuries were reported as minor, including sprains and impact-related trauma. The injured were transported to medical facilities, including hospitals in Gurugram, for evaluation and treatment. The airline had earlier said that six passengers had been injured but revised the number. There were 228 passengers, four infants and 13 crew members on board the aircraft, which was an Airbus A330. Several passengers described a sudden and forceful braking event followed by confusion during evacuation. Some cited issues such as delays in opening certain exits and crowding near evacuation points. A few passengers also criticised the ground response, alleging inadequate coordination and delays in post-evacuation assistance, including transport and accommodation. “We are aware of an incident involving flight LX147 in Delhi. The crew aborted takeoff following an engine issue and initiated a precautionary evacuation. Passenger and crew safety is our top priority, and we are supporting those affected while working with authorities to investigate the matter”, SWISS said in a statement. Preliminary information indicates the incident originated from an engine failure leading to fire, though authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause. Aviation and airline technical teams have begun a detailed investigation into the sequence of events, including engine performance, fire detection systems, and crew response. SWISS confirmed that the takeoff was aborted as a precaution following an engine issue and stated that passenger safety remained the priority. The airline has initiated standard safety and technical inspections and is assisting affected passengers with rebooking and accommodation.

According to airline and regulatory sources, the flight crew reported non-specific vibrations and unusual noise, particularly from the aircraft’s belly or cargo hold area, while the aircraft was cruising over Oman/Saudi Arabian airspace. Despite normal cockpit instrument readings, the pilots opted for a precautionary return in line with safety protocols. Air India confirmed that the decision was taken “in an abundance of caution” after a suspected technical issue was identified. The aircraft had departed Delhi around 5:42–6:13 AM and returned at approximately 12:30–1:20 PM, after covering nearly 3,000+ km before turning back. Air India confirmed that the aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew onboard were unharmed. The airline stated that the aircraft is undergoing extensive technical inspections, and reiterated that passenger safety remains its top priority. Passengers were provided assistance, including refreshments and arrangements for onward travel. This is the second time in less than two weeks that aircraft VT-JRF has experienced similar issues. On March 15, the same aircraft, operating flight AI102 (New York–Delhi), was diverted to Shannon, Ireland, after passengers reported floorboard vibrations and noise from below the cabin. Around 300 passengers were onboard during that incident, and the aircraft landed safely. India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has launched a formal investigation into the incident. Officials from the airworthiness and air safety directorates are examining the aircraft and the recurring nature of the issue.

The double-deck superjumbo, registered as G-XLEK, departed Heathrow at approximately 11:43 GMT on Wednesday for the scheduled transatlantic service. Around four hours into the planned 10-hour journey, the flight began holding over northern UK airspace near Scotland and released fuel over a remote area off the west coast, a standard aviation practice to safely reduce landing weight. Flight tracking services showed BA285 circling at multiple flight levels for more than an hour before crews initiated the return to Heathrow. During this period the aircraft also became one of the most-tracked flights globally on FlightRadar24, highlighting the unusual nature of the diversion. British Airways subsequently confirmed the aircraft touched back down at Heathrow later the same day without declaring an emergency. In a statement to media, the airline said the diversion was due to a technical issue with the aircraft’s communication system and stressed that all on board landed safely with no injuries reported. Passengers affected by the disruption are being assisted with rebooking and ground support. The airline has apologised to customers for the inconvenience and encouraged travellers to check flight status information via official channels. A few days ago on December 8, a British Airways Airbus A320 flight from Edinburgh to London declared a mid-air emergency and returned safely to Edinburgh Airport earlier this week, after pilots reported a landing gear malfunction shortly after departure. Flight BA1443, bound for Heathrow, issued the internationally recognised 7700 emergency squawk code minutes after takeoff when the aircraft’s landing gear failed to retract properly, prompting the crew to hold over Stirling while troubleshooting before returning and landing without incident. The unscheduled return led Edinburgh Airport to temporarily suspend incoming and outgoing flights, with several services diverted to nearby airports during the disruption. No injuries were reported, and British Airways apologised to affected passengers as operations resumed after the technical issue was resolved.
