Melawi, Indonesia: All eight people on board a helicopter were killed after the aircraft crashed in a remote, forested area of Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province, authorities confirmed on Friday, following an overnight search operation that located the wreckage in difficult terrain. The aircraft, identified as an Airbus H130 helicopter operated by Matthew Air Nusantara, lost contact shortly after takeoff on Thursday morning while flying within Melawi district in Borneo island. According to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the helicopter disappeared from radar approximately five minutes after departure from a plantation helipad and was later found crashed about 3 kilometres from its last known contact point, in a densely forested and hilly area. “The location of the crash or loss of contact is in a densely forested area with steep hilly terrain,” said Mohammad Syafii, head of Basarnas, as quoted by Reuters. Officials confirmed that the aircraft carried six passengers and two crew members, all of whom died in the crash. The 2 crew members were identified as Pilot in Command, Captain Marindra W, and Engineer on Board, Harun Arasyid along with 6 passengers Patrick K, Victor T, Charles L, Joko C, Fauzie O, and Sugito. Rescue teams recovered wreckage, including parts believed to be the tail section of the helicopter, during the search operation involving military and police units. The plantation area from which the helicopter departed is reportedly owned by the palm oil company Citra Mahkota, according to rescue officials cited in international reports. Search and recovery efforts were significantly slowed due to dense jungle terrain and steep hills, forcing rescue teams to rely on combined aerial reconnaissance and ground movement through difficult forest access routes. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Investigators are currently examining all possible factors, including mechanical failure and weather conditions, though no official conclusion has been released. “The cause of the crash remains unclear,” Basarnas officials said, confirming that a full investigation is underway.

Jakarta, Indonesia: Search and rescue teams in Indonesia have located the wreckage of a missing Indonesia Air Transport ATR 42-500 aircraft on the slopes of Mount Bulusaraung in South Sulawesi province, officials confirmed Sunday, as efforts intensify to find the remaining passengers and crew. The turboprop aircraft, chartered by Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for an aerial surveillance mission, lost contact with air traffic control at about 1:17 p.m. local time on January 17 while en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar, authorities said. Rescuers detecting debris from the aircraft on Sunday morning narrowed the search zone to a steep, forested area inside Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park. Ground teams located scattered wreckage including what are believed to be parts of the fuselage, tail section and windows around the peak of the mountain at approximately 8:02 a.m. local time. Later in the afternoon, a male victim’s body was recovered from a ravine around 200 meters deep, surrounded by aircraft debris, Makassar’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) announced. The victim is being evacuated via a challenging climbing route amid fog and rain. The initial report said there were 11 people on board, including eight crew members and three ministry officials. However, later revisions by Indonesian authorities indicated 10 individuals were aboard comprising seven crew and three passengers. The identities of those aboard, including crew and ministry personnel, have not yet been publicly released. Among the passengers were government officials conducting fisheries surveillance, a ministry statement confirmed. Rescue operations involve hundreds of personnel from Basarnas, the Indonesian military, police, marine units, volunteers and other agencies. Teams are navigating extremely rugged karst terrain, thick fog and heavy winds that continue to slow progress. Basarnas officials have established a one-kilometer search radius around the crash site and divided the area into multiple search zones to improve coordination. Helicopters, drones and ground units are deployed across sectors to cover difficult-to-reach areas. Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) has been notified and is expected to lead the investigation, including efforts to locate and recover the aircraft’s flight recorders (black boxes). Investigators have not yet confirmed retrieval of the devices. Preliminary assessments suggest the aircraft may have crashed into terrain under control, known as “controlled flight into terrain,” though the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Indonesia has announced a new directive requiring all international aviation waste entering its territory to be sent back to its country of origin, reinforcing the government’s stance against becoming a disposal site for foreign refuse. The Ministry of Transportation confirmed that waste generated by international flights including cabin trash, catering residues, and cargo packaging must be repatriated and processed under the waste management rules of the originating nation. The regulation is part of Indonesia’s effort to safeguard environmental sovereignty and ensure strict adherence to international waste-control agreements. Officials said the measure is consistent with Indonesia’s commitments under the Basel Convention, which mandates the return of hazardous or non-compliant waste shipments to their source countries. Authorities emphasized that no imported waste, whether by air or sea, should contain hazardous or contaminated materials disguised as recyclables. The government has already begun returning several shipments found to contain dangerous or non-conforming substances. In recent months, containers with toxic and radioactive traces were ordered back to their exporters following inspections at Indonesian ports. Transportation and environment officials stated that detailed technical procedures will soon be issued to guide airlines and airport operators on the handling and return of international aviation waste. These include requirements for proper segregation, containment, and certification before aircraft depart Indonesian airports. The directive is expected to affect international carriers operating into Indonesia, as airlines will now be responsible for ensuring that their onboard waste does not remain within Indonesian jurisdiction. The move also aligns with the country’s broader policy to prevent illegal waste imports and strengthen domestic environmental protection measures.
