All occupants were rescued safely and taken to Dr Rajendra Prasad Hospital for evaluation, with four passengers kept under observation and no life-threatening injuries reported. Preliminary findings indicate a suspected technical malfunction forced the pilot to execute a controlled emergency landing about 300 metres short of the runway. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Indian Coast Guard have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident. Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India: A Pawan Hans Ltd helicopter carrying seven people, including two crew members, crashed into the sea near Mayabunder in the North and Middle Andaman district on Tuesday morning, February 24, 2026. All seven occupants were rescued safely, officials confirmed. The aircraft, operating inter-island services for the central public sector undertaking, went down in the Indian Ocean shortly before its scheduled landing at Mayabunder around 9:30 a.m. local time. Local rescue teams and maritime responders reached the site promptly after the helicopter entered the water. All five passengers and both crew members were recovered from mid-sea and taken to Dr Rajendra Prasad Hospital in Mayabunder for medical evaluation and treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that four of the passengers, Rajita Devi, her infant Kamal Ch. Das, Sipra Saha, and Nambi Amma remain under observation and receiving care. Authorities said the two pilots and the remaining passenger were stable, with no life-threatening injuries reported so far. According to officials, the flight had taken off from Sri Vijaya Puram at approximately 8:45 a.m. for Mayabunder, following a previous leg from Port Blair. The helicopter was scheduled to land around 9:30 a.m., but encountered serious trouble shortly before touchdown. A preliminary inquiry by civil aviation authorities indicated the aircraft experienced a technical malfunction prompting the pilot to execute a controlled emergency landing approximately 300 metres short of the runway. Officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Indian Coast Guard have initiated an investigation into the incident. Statements from the pilot and crew are expected to form part of the inquiry once medical assessments are complete. A spokesperson for Pawan Hans Ltd described the mishap as a “short landing incident” near Mayabunder and confirmed that all occupants were accounted for and evacuated safely. The company reaffirmed that all necessary safety protocols were followed during the emergency response. A senior civil aviation official reiterated that initial findings point to a suspected technical issue aboard the helicopter, and that investigators are working to determine the exact cause.

Arizona, United States: A helicopter crash in remote terrain east of Phoenix claimed the lives of a seasoned Oregon pilot and his three young nieces on Jan. 2, 2026, just hours before he was scheduled to be married, authorities and family members said. The MD 369FF helicopter, piloted by 59-year-old David McCarty, crashed into rugged terrain in Telegraph Canyon, near Superior in Pinal County at around 11 a.m. local time, killing all four occupants. Family members said McCarty, originally from Oregon and a long-time resident of Queen Creek, Arizona, had taken his nieces Rachel McCarty (22), Faith McCarty (21) and Katelyn Heideman (21) on a sightseeing flight before his planned wedding later that afternoon. The bride-to-be, McCarty’s fiancée Joelleen Linstrom, was not aboard. According to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, an eyewitness called 911 after seeing the helicopter strike what preliminary reports describe as a recreational slackline stretched across the canyon before it fell to the canyon floor. Deputies and rescue teams hiked into the remote area and reached the wreckage around 5 p.m. several hours after the crash. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. Local family members posted tributes on social media, describing the losses as devastating. “Many have heard about the unimaginable losses in my family. They went out for a helicopter ride in Arizona. The helicopter crashed and they never got the chance to come home,” wrote Elizabeth Gallup, a relative of the victims. McCarty was the founder and owner of Columbia Basin Helicopters, a firm based in La Grande, Oregon, with work in aerial support for power-line construction, logging, firefighting and recovery operations. Family and colleagues described him as an experienced pilot familiar with the area’s terrain, having flown similar routes multiple times. The helicopter departed from Pegasus Airpark in Queen Creek before entering the mountainous landscape south of Superior, according to local reports. Preliminary investigation indicates the helicopter may have collided with a recreational slackline, more than half a mile long, strung across the canyon. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), along with the sheriff’s office, are jointly investigating the incident to determine how the slackline came to be placed in that airspace and whether proper aviation safety protocols were followed. The International Slackline Association confirmed the slackline had aviation markers and that a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) had been issued to warn aviators of the obstruction before the crash. No slackliners were on the line at the time of the accident. Officials said investigators will gather flight records, radar data, maintenance logs, weather information, witness statements and other evidence as part of the formal NTSB investigation. A spokesperson for the NTSB has stated that the agency will lead the effort to determine the probable cause. The FAA and other agencies have urged pilots flying in rugged and remote environments to review all Notices to Air Missions and to exercise heightened caution when navigating below canyon rims and near known obstructions.

Dagestan, Russia: A Russian Ka-226 light utility helicopter operated by Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant (KEMZ) crashed in the Republic of Dagestan on Friday, after catching fire mid-air, killing at least five people, including senior officials of the defense manufacturer. The helicopter, registered RA-19307, was flying from Kizlyar to Izberbash on November 7 when it reportedly caught fire while airborne near the village of Achi-Su, close to the Caspian Sea. videos circulating on Russian and international media show the aircraft’s tail section detaching as it spun uncontrollably before slamming into the ground and erupting into flames. According to a statement by the plant, the dead included KEMZ’s deputy general director, chief engineer, and chief designer. Two other employees who were initially reported injured also succumbed to their injuries, KEMZ, part of the Rostec defense conglomerate, manufactures the Ka-226 multipurpose helicopter used by Russian armed forces and civilian operators. Video evidence reviewed by multiple outlets shows the pilot struggling to stabilize the aircraft after its tail rotor failed mid-air. Witnesses reported seeing the helicopter hover momentarily before the fuselage ignited and fell to the ground. The aircraft crashed into an unoccupied private house, causing no ground casualties, regional authorities confirmed. Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) classified the event as a “disaster” and opened an inquiry into possible violations of flight-safety regulations. The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a separate criminal probe into potential breaches of airworthiness and maintenance procedures. Preliminary assessments suggest a mechanical or structural failure in the tail section may have triggered the inflight breakup. Experts also noted that ongoing sanctions have limited access to certain aviation components, raising maintenance and reliability concerns across several Russian aircraft fleets. The pilot appeared to have continued flight despite visible structural damage before attempting an emergency landing. Aviation analysts have called the decision “questionable,” given the apparent loss of tail-rotor control, which is critical for helicopter stability. The Kamov Ka-226 is a twin-engine, light utility helicopter designed for reconnaissance, medical evacuation, and transport missions. Known for its coaxial rotor configuration, the type has been in service since the late 1990s and is produced by KEMZ under license. The same model was previously involved in several non-fatal incidents linked to gearbox and rotor-system issues. Authorities have not yet released the flight data or cockpit voice recorders, and the investigation is expected to continue in coordination with Russia’s Interstate Aviation Committee.
