New Delhi, India: India’s civil aviation sector is facing an escalating pilot shortage that has forced major carriers into an unprecedented competition for captains and senior flight crew, industry sources and official communications show. The scramble for personnel comes amid tighter safety rules on flight duty times and a recent operational disruption at the country’s largest airline. The roster crisis first became widely visible earlier in December, when IndiGo operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd cancelled thousands of flights due to crew unavailability following the implementation of stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These rules, aimed at improving pilot rest and reducing fatigue, require longer rest periods and limit the number of night landings, increasing the number of pilots needed for scheduled services. According to TOI, both IndiGo and the Air India group have entered a fierce competition to recruit experienced captains, with some offers reportedly including joining bonuses of up to ₹50 lakh to attract talent from rivals or international carriers. Such incentives rarely seen at this scale in Indian aviation reflect the acute need for senior pilots capable of leading flight operations across domestic and international routes. Earlier IndiGo has informed the DGCA that it plans to add about 100 pilots in January, while Air India has launched new hiring drives. However, both carriers are dealing with a rise in captain departures, some moving overseas sharpening the recruitment battle as airlines work to meet required crew levels. A senior airline executive quoted by TOI described the situation as exceptionally intense, noting that carriers are actively poaching captains from each other and bracing for continued shortages as FDTL norms reduce the pool of available crew. In response to the operational stress and pilot attrition, IndiGo has announced a revision of pilot compensation, including increases in domestic layover, deadhead, night flying, transit, and newly introduced tail-swap allowances, effective January 1, 2026. Communication from the airline’s flight operations leadership details the enhanced pay structure for both captains and first officers. India is set to see an intense contest for captains between the Air India group and IndiGo. While Air India does not currently face a pilot shortage across most of its fleet, barring the Boeing 787, it must recruit for future growth. IndiGo, meanwhile, will need to strengthen pilot–management relations to retain and attract talent. Akasa does not require additional pilots as it has a surplus. Unless Air India and IndiGo offer improved working conditions, they risk continued pilot migration to the Middle East and destinations such as Vietnam,” said Captain Shakti Lumba, former vice president of Air India and IndiGo. New Delhi, India: India’s largest airline IndiGo has announced a significant revision of pilot allowances, effective January 1, 2026, in an effort to address morale issues, strengthen retention and ensure smoother flight operations following widespread cancellations earlier this month. The allowance revisions were communicated in an internal email sent to IndiGo’s pilots by Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President for Flight Operations, outlining the updated pay and allowance structure. It increases key components of pilot compensation across a range of duty types, including domestic layovers, deadhead travel, night flying, transit stops and tail‑swap operations. Under the revised structure: Domestic layover allowances for stays between 10:01 and 24 hours have been raised by about 50% captains will receive ₹3,000 (up from ₹2,000) and first officers ₹1,500 (up from ₹1,000). Deadhead travel allowances paid when pilots reposition as passengers have increased to ₹4,000 for captains and ₹2,000 for first officers. Night flying compensation has been standardised to a fixed payment of ₹2,000 per hour for captains and ₹1,000 for first officers. Tail‑swap allowance, a new category for duties involving a change of aircraft mid‑duty, has been introduced at ₹1,500 for captains and ₹750 for first officers. Transit allowances for extended ground halts beyond 90 minutes have also been adjusted upwards. The revisions come after a turbulent December, during which IndiGo cancelled thousands of flights, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded amid challenges in crew rostering under stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms. According to industry reports, the airline’s failure to sufficiently staff pilots in anticipation of the new regulations led to widespread operational disruptions. In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered a reduction in IndiGo’s winter schedule and has been engaged in ongoing regulatory oversight. IndiGo, which employs roughly 5,000 pilots and controls around 65% of India’s domestic market, has faced criticism from some pilot groups and aviation analysts for fatigue‑linked rostering pressures and competitive hiring practices by foreign carriers. While the airline has not publicly commented on the revisions, industry experts say the allowance uplift represents a strategic move to stabilise operations ahead of the peak travel season and improve pilot retention amid intensified competition. Regulatory sources indicated that the airline’s leadership has held dialogue with pilot representatives at several operational bases in recent weeks.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The Middle East is set for one of the fastest expansions in global aviation, with Airbus projecting more than 265,000 new jobs across the sector over the next 20 years. The forecast, released ahead of the Dubai Airshow cycle, highlights the region’s accelerating demand for pilots, technicians, and cabin crew as airlines expand fleets and long-haul networks. Airbus estimates the need for 69,000 pilots, 64,000 aircraft technicians, and almost 132,000 cabin crew by 2044. The hiring surge aligns with a major increase in aircraft operating in the region. The in-service fleet, currently around 1,480 aircraft, is expected to grow to 3,700 within two decades. Wide-body aircraft will make up 42% of future fleet requirements, more than double the global average. The commercial aviation services market, covering maintenance, training, operations, and air traffic management, is projected to reach US$ 30 billion over the same period. Passenger traffic is forecast to grow at a 4.4% compound annual rate, driven by population growth, expanding tourism, and rising regional trade. Airbus also notes that the Middle East’s population is expected to increase by nearly 240 million people by 2044, further boosting air-travel demand. Airbus executives say the region’s geographic advantage and growing airline networks position it as a future global connector. “The Middle East is becoming the long-haul hub now and into the future,” said Gabriel Semelas, the company’s president for Africa and the Middle East, citing the strong long-range fleet requirements throughout the Gulf. Independent economic studies also highlight how central aviation has become to the region’s future. An Oxford Economics report commissioned by Emirates Group and Dubai Airports shows the sector supported 631,000 jobs in Dubai in 2023 and contributed AED 137 billion to the emirate’s GDP. By 2030, aviation-linked employment is expected to rise to 816,000 jobs, representing nearly one in four positions in Dubai. The ongoing expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to generate 132,000 additional jobs and contribute more than AED 6.1 billion to Dubai’s GDP by the end of the decade. Training academies, maintenance providers, and regulatory authorities will need to scale rapidly to match the demand. The region’s major carriers including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Saudia have already begun large recruitment drives, signalling strong near-term hiring momentum even before long-term growth peaks. The Airbus forecast signals a sustained phase of expansion for Middle Eastern aviation, positioning the region as a global employment engine and one of the most influential long-range aviation markets worldwide.
