Florida, United States: A training aircraft belonging to Florida-based flight school Aamro Aviation was involved in an emergency forced landing Friday afternoon after a reported engine malfunction caused the aircraft to crash into a field near Hobe Sound, Florida, authorities said. According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. west of Interstate 95 near Hobe Sound. Deputies and Martin County Fire Rescue crews responded after the aircraft went down in an open dirt field following an apparent loss of engine power. Both occupants, a flight instructor and a student pilot survived the crash and escaped without serious injuries. The aircraft involved was identified as a 2023-built Cessna 172S Skyhawk SP registered as N294PL. The aircraft sustained “substantial damage” during the forced landing after experiencing engine power loss near Tailwinds Airport (FD15). Flight tracking data showed the aircraft departed from North Palm Beach County General Aviation Airport before the emergency unfolded. Reports indicated the airplane was operating as a training flight carrying a certified flight instructor and a student pilot at the time of the accident. Photos released from the scene showed the white single-engine aircraft heavily damaged in the field after the emergency landing. According to the airline’s official statement, the incident occurred approximately six hours into the long-haul flight when the co-pilot became unwell during the journey. The Airbus A350-941, registered HB-IFB, was carrying 227 passengers and 14 crew members at the time. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft squawking transponder code 7700, the international emergency signal used to indicate a general emergency before diverting south toward Almaty International Airport. The aircraft landed safely shortly before 1 p.m. local time on May 6. SWISS confirmed that three doctors travelling onboard assisted the crew by providing immediate medical aid to the co-pilot during the diversion. Based on their recommendation, the operating crew decided to divert to Almaty to ensure the pilot received urgent medical attention as quickly as possible. Following the unscheduled landing, passengers and crew were accommodated overnight in hotels in Almaty while the airline arranged for an additional pilot to be flown in. SWISS stated that the flight could not continue immediately because aviation regulations require a specifically qualified first officer to occupy the co-pilot’s right-hand seat. The airline also noted that crew duty-time limitations would have been exceeded if the flight had continued without additional crew support. In its statement, the airline said the “health and wellbeing” of its colleague remained the top priority while acknowledging the disruption caused to passengers’ travel plans. Authorities ended active operations after nearly 45 hours of continuous air and water searches, covering more than 770 square miles, with no survivors found. Coast Guard officials said the decision was made after all reasonable search efforts were exhausted. The aircraft, a Cessna 172 operated by Apollo Flight Training of Gulfport, Mississippi, was conducting a training flight on Monday evening when it disappeared from radar about four miles from New Orleans Lakefront Airport.
