Amsterdam, Netherlands: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has reached a new collective labour agreement (CLA) with its cabin crew unions, bringing an end to months of negotiations and restoring labour stability at the Dutch flag carrier. The agreement was concluded with unions VNC, FNV Cabine and De Unie and has been approved by union members. The two-year agreement runs from 1 March 2025 through 28 February 2027 and applies retroactively. KLM said the deal balances improvements in purchasing power for cabin crew with the airline’s ongoing focus on cost control and operational reliability. Under the agreement, cabin crew will receive a phased salary increase totalling approximately 3.25 percent over the contract period. In addition, KLM will pay a one-time net allowance of €750 to full-time cabin crew in January 2026 as compensation for inflationary pressures. Beyond pay, the agreement includes updates to working arrangements and long-term employability measures. These include continued access to the 80-90-100 scheme, which allows older cabin crew to work reduced hours while maintaining pension accrual, as well as provisions for temporary early retirement (RVU). The CLA also introduces clearer rules on internal mobility, allowing cabin crew who move to ground positions to return to flying roles under defined conditions. KLM said the agreement provides clarity and predictability for both employees and operations, particularly after a period marked by industrial actions and staffing pressures at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Labour stability among cabin crew is seen as critical for maintaining schedule reliability across KLM’s short-haul and long-haul networks. The deal follows earlier labour agreements reached with other employee groups at KLM, reflecting a broader effort by the airline to normalise labour relations while navigating higher costs, supply-chain pressures and capacity constraints affecting the global aviation industry. Union representatives described the agreement as a compromise, noting that while it does not meet all earlier demands, it secures wage growth, safeguards employment conditions and preserves important flexibility schemes for cabin crew.

Montreal, Canada: Global air transport is positioned for a historic expansion in 2026, with passenger volumes and airline revenues reaching new heights even as supply chain constraints and cost pressures persist, according to the latest forecasts from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and related industry reporting. Airlines worldwide are expected to carry approximately 5.2 billion passengers in 2026, marking a continued recovery from the pandemic era and outpacing previous demand projections, the industry body and multiple analysts report. The global airline industry’s combined net profit is forecast at around US$41 billion in 2026, an increase from roughly US$39.5 billion in 2025, though profit margins are expected to remain thin by historical standards. “This growth is extremely welcome considering the headwinds that the industry faces including rising costs from supply chain bottlenecks, geopolitical conflict, sluggish global trade and increasing regulatory burdens,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General, in the association’s latest outlook. Industry revenues are forecast to exceed US$1 trillion in 2026, broadening the sector’s economic footprint and anchoring the recovery in passenger demand. Revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) are expected to expand by around 4.9 percent, driven by continued travel appetite in key markets across Asia Pacific, the Middle East and the Americas. Seat load factors, a key measure of airline efficiency, are projected to rise to record levels of nearly 84 percent, indicating strong capacity utilization even as aircraft availability tightens. The Middle East is projected to outpace all regions in profitability in 2026, with carriers delivering the highest net profit margin (about 9.3 percent) and the highest profit per passenger (approximately US$28.6). This performance is attributed to strategic investment, supportive policy frameworks and the region’s role as a global connecting hub. However, IATA officials caution that profit strength is uneven, with some carriers still under pressure from geopolitical instability, blocked funds and uneven infrastructure development. Despite robust demand, airlines face persistent supply chain disruptions that continue to constrain aircraft deliveries and fleet renewal efforts. Production backlogs for new aircraft and engines remain at historic highs, creating a structural mismatch between airline requirements and manufacturing capacity that is unlikely to normalise before the early 2030s. Industry analysts warn that these bottlenecks including delays in delivery slots and parts shortages not only limit capacity growth but also contribute to rising maintenance costs and an aging global fleet. While aggregate profits are climbing, the net profit margin is expected to hover around 3.9 percent in 2026, modest by historical standards and reflective of sustained cost pressures. Factors such as labour costs, regulatory compliance, fuel price volatility and infrastructure charges continue to weigh on airline financials. Analysts also note that cargo operations remain resilient, though growth in cargo tonne kilometres is forecast to be more moderate compared with pre-pandemic peaks. Industry forecasts underscore a cautiously optimistic outlook for global aviation: strong passenger demand and revenue growth amid ongoing structural challenges. As airlines prepare for operational and financial execution in 2026, capacity management, supply chain resolves, and regional market dynamics will likely determine which carriers sustain profitability and growth.

Reykjavík, Iceland: Icelandic budget airline Play Airlines has announced the immediate suspension of all flights and the cessation of its operations on September 29, 2025. The unexpected shutdown has left roughly 1,750 passengers stranded at destinations across Europe and North America. The airline cited ongoing financial difficulties, declining ticket sales, and internal operational challenges as the main reasons behind the abrupt closure. Around 500 employees have lost their jobs due to the closure, including pilots, cabin crew, and administrative staff. Play Airlines has stated that it is working to provide guidance and support to its workforce during the transition. Founded in 2019 by former executives of WOW Air and Primera Air, Play Airlines launched operations in 2021 with the goal of offering affordable transatlantic flights connecting Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport with European and North American cities. While the airline initially gained traction among price-sensitive travelers, it struggled to maintain profitability amid intense competition and rising operational costs. Until Monday morning, Play Airlines operated flights to several European cities such as London Stansted, Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Alicante, and Faro. The final flight from Reykjavik to Stansted landed on time at 10:40 a.m. on Monday. However, the aircraft remains at the airport, and the scheduled return flight to Reykjavik has been cancelled. PLAY Airlines’ shutdown was driven by mounting financial losses that proved unsustainable. At the end of the previous year, the airline reported a loss of $66 million (£49 million), which amounted to roughly £31 per passenger. Although the airline’s most recent financial results in August 2025 projected that profitability might begin in 2026, these expectations never materialized. Aviation analyst Sean Moulton noted that PLAY attempted to replicate WOW Air’s model, linking secondary European cities with the U.S., but faced a limited market and low yields. Even after shifting strategy to focus on point-to-point leisure destinations, the small Icelandic population made it difficult for the airline to succeed independently. The sudden suspension has caused significant disruption for passengers, many of whom are currently stranded abroad. Travelers are advised to contact their credit card providers, travel agencies, or flight insurers for refunds. In addition, some carriers may provide “rescue fares” for affected travelers seeking alternative routes. Play Airlines collapse due to the ongoing challenges faced by low-cost carriers, particularly in the transatlantic market. New Delhi, India: SpiceJet, one of India’s leading low-cost carriers, has once again delayed salary payments for a significant portion of its workforce, According to the report by PTI senior employees who are earning above ₹55,000 per month are affected. While junior staff reportedly received their August salaries on time, senior employees, including Assistant Managers and above, are facing delays of up to 15 days, according to company sources. The airline has cited a “phased disbursement schedule” as the reason for the delay, stating that payments for higher-earning employees are staggered during lean periods. The delays affect a substantial number of employees, with the airline employing 6,484 staff, of whom 4,894 are permanent employees. Reports suggest that the salary delays predominantly impact employees in managerial and senior technical roles. These delays come at a time when the airline is navigating financial pressures, including a net loss of ₹238 crore reported in the June quarter of 2025. During 2024-25, SpiceJet provided an interest-free advance to Ajay Singh, who is the Chairman and Managing Director, an amount of Rs 32 crore for a five-year period in accordance with the Nomination and Remuneration Committee and board-approved policy of the company, as per the annual report. "The company has adjusted the advance from the salary of subsequent months (April and May 2025), as per the company's policy. Further, this advance is not prejudicial to the interest of the company," the report said. The Airline said that losses are mainly due to costs linked to several grounded aircrafts and expenses for bringing them back into service. It has only 21 aircraft operational out of 56 and 35 grounded. Employees impacted by the delayed payments have expressed concerns over financial planning, especially as the delayed salaries coincide with ongoing personal and household obligations. While junior employees received their payments on schedule, the staggered payments for senior staff have raised questions about employee morale and retention. Last September, the airline raised ₹3,000 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), with plans to use the funds to operationalize grounded aircraft, purchase new planes, invest in technology, and enter new markets. Despite these intentions, progress has been slow, and a substantial number of aircraft remain grounded.
